Dangerous to refer to scrolling images, but right below that story when I brought it up was a picture of a bunch of Santa Claus's on mopeds or scooters. I figure I have more time to talk to Santa on a bike than in a car!

Insane! The crazy's on public transportation is one of the many reasons I commute by bike as well.

@mr geeker New York City has over 8.3 million people and the vast majority are normal folks. Of course we have our share of crazies but I assure you they reside in your neck of the woods also buddy. I grew up taking the subway and still do all the time just like millions of others. Low and behold we survived.

I got off topic.. I started bike commuting because of money (or lack of it).. I kept going after money wasn't as big a deal for both the exercise and stress relief.. Unlike many people i know, I love my work days. Not due to the work, but the bike ride in and out, the work bit in the middle sucks..

Speaking as a New York City commuter....
For several years I took the #6 subway for a couple miles every morning and afternoon as part of my commute. I liked it; it's a cool old line with cool old stations. I only saw one violent incident in all that time, though I did see some interesting (
) stuff. After I switched to a folding bike, over ten years ago, the most striking thing I noticed was that I got sick less frequently, my kids got sick less frequently, and my wife got sick less frequently. I was bringing germs home with me, and when i stopped taking the subway, there seemed to be less of that.
In the mean time, my office has moved, and CitiBikes have become a way of life here, so my commute has continued to change. I think I see more "crazy people" on the streets than I saw in the subway, but they are easier to avoid on the street than in the confined space of the subway. Anyway, most of these "crazy people" are not in the least threatening, though they often smell bad.

15$/day parking, 2-year long waiting list for the discounted rate. $7 in an open lot, but those aren't always available. Plus, if I commute by bike or walking more than 50% of my monthly miles, my employer pays me $50. So, I figure that every day I ride, I make $2.50 plus the saved parking - or at least $10/day. Of course, I used to commute before getting this job, so financials aren't really the incentive. OK, maybe paying for parking is a little bit, I hate paying to park.
So, there's the financial part, but, really, I just hate wasting time sitting in a car.
