Haha I didn't even think of making it official like that. Doctors don't usually listen to my ideas of the healing properties of bike riding though, they're always telling me to stay off the bike. If I do find a Dr that goes for it, I'll for sure post it here!

I'm thinking it couldn't have been broken because I'm walking on it without a limp today, or at least not enough that you'd notice. Still has the awful coloring though. Shoulder's not so great either but I didn't re-fracture the collarbone. Strangely it's all ok on the bike. The commute again felt great.

My commute was awesome today! Rode home in 74°F weather with a nice breeze. Absolute perfection. And to think just a few weeks ago it was under 20°.

mr geeker 02-03-16 08:43 PM

I petaled through winter storm kayla yesterday mornin... that sucked. A lot. My goggles kept icing and fogging over, and I had to walk up a hill that normally isn't an issue at all due to the horrendous head wind (and snow). Still, I made it to work, on time even, when others who drive didn't. The ride home was worse, though not for the same reasons. Because it was above freezing everything turned to a salt/sand/slush mix (wasn't solid enough to call it "brown sugar").

Today, well, today was awesome in comparison, though not without its own "charms". My chain and rear derailleur froze solid over night so I was stuck in 8th gear and it skipped horribly for about half my mornin commute. On the bright side it didn't skip on my way home tonight, though it was still frozen in 8th gear.

The commute in today was a very nice uneventful ride with the temp at 55f degrees it was warm.

Phil_gretz 02-04-16 07:08 AM

Ugh. 2nd day in a row that I flatted on the rear. This time, a pinhole in a different location. Fortunately, I was near a local gym where I could change things out in a lighted interior room.

Ordered a pair of Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires when I got in. I'm tired of this nonsense.

Otherwise, a brisk tailwind today at ~48 degrees. Pretty nice.

Rained out for the second day in a row, continuing our pattern of extended bouts of rainy weather from El Nino. The rain was very heavy yesterday and a lot of streets were flooded on my drive home, and more of the same is expected today. It's supposed to dry out by tomorrow, so I should be able to salvage 3 riding days this week, which seems to be the best I can hope for this winter.

kuroba 02-04-16 08:51 AM

Today I noticed my morning commute was noticeably darker than just this past week. First time we've had to turn on lights since mid-November or so. Winter is coming :(

Tundra_Man 02-04-16 08:51 AM

Back on my bike today after yesterday's concession to drive. I fixed my flat last night. Gave me a good look at how much my whole drivetrain has deteriorated from winter riding. My cassette has maybe 1500 miles on it (if that) and all of the teeth are just sharp little points. Chain ring looks the same on the smaller two rings (I rarely use the big ring for winter riding.) Both derailleurs are quite rusty. Wow. Probably going to have to sink some money into the bike after this season.

Ride was uneventful. 18 degrees, but a very light wind. All the streets and MUP were plowed out after the Tues/Wed blizzard. In fact I passed two trucks making their 2nd pass clearing the MUP and gave them an enthusiastic thank you wave. :thumb:

No, no, winter is leaving! I've been noticing how much sooner the it gets light here in the morning - you're upside down!

... and winter is back with a vengeance, 24F and snowing this morning. I didn't think it was much but apparently enough to gather inside my rear fender and make scraping sounds. I hate scraping sounds

I'm on the wrong side of the world

HardyWeinberg 02-04-16 10:01 AM

40F, very wet but no active precip

noglider 02-04-16 10:28 AM

Grr, I had to drive my wife's car. We found an excellent mechanic, so whenever one of her cars needs repair, I drive it to the garage two blocks from my workplace. I had to make a stop in midtown on my way, which meant I had to drive through midtown, which is torturous.

One funny thing is that I asked my phone's navigation app to get me to work. It told me to take the "Maj Deegan Expressway" and pronounced "Maj" as "mahzh," as if it's some kind of Indian name.

Another 5 weeks or so and you'll be in the dark in the morning once again, until about May.

Had planned on riding today, but tomorrow looks better in terms of temperature and wind direction so I'll ride tomorrow.

True, but doesn't seem so dark when it's warmer. Yeah, that's nuts, but true

RidingMatthew 02-04-16 11:58 AM

52F and very wet on the roads some spots hanging in the sky. overall a good ride. Kneewarmer, arm warmers and vest. lowest temp i saw was 49F on the ride in.

i always think it seems darker when the sky is cloudy versus clear.

no motor? 02-04-16 12:13 PM

I got my first ride and commute of the year in today. The road are finally clear (at least for the time being) and there's no precipitation in the forecast. It felt nice, but the cold temperatures just ad to the sting of atrophied muscles.

dcb23 02-05-16 06:16 AM

36F/2C, rain/snow mix and a strong headwind which turned into a buffeting cross wind and I went over the Potomac into the District.

mr geeker 02-05-16 06:50 AM

It's gonna be a chilly one this mornin, 14 f currently.

tarwheel 02-05-16 07:39 AM

Roads very wet this morning but the rain had mostly quit. The forecasters originally had called for rain only on Wednesday, but it was a slow-moving front and continued through about 7 am today. Fortunately, it rained heavy enough that it should have washed all of the salt off the roads leftover from the winter storm. The weather is supposed to turn much cooler than it's been for the past week or so, and we will be back to freezing temperatures in the morning through next week. That's fine by me as I like the cold.

PatrickGSR94 02-05-16 08:53 AM

Finally another commute this week. Usually I go T/Th but this week went M/Fr due to weather. A cold 26F this morning, but should be in the 50's this afternoon with a light tail wind.

Had a couple of people ride behind me for a long time like they were afraid to pass or something, despite having plenty of room to pass. One guy decided to ride behind me for over half a mile at 12 mph, despite having plenty of chances to pass. As a result 2 other vehicles got backed up behind him also. I waved him by multiple times but he stayed behind. Finally I stopped dead in the road and sternly waved him by, which he finally did, and pointed at me as he rode by. Ass.

HardyWeinberg 02-05-16 10:31 AM

38F, gray, clammy

enigmaT120 02-05-16 12:05 PM

Good to see HardyWeinber posting in this thread again. Mine is usually similar, but 36 at my house and dark. It was clear at my house but I rapidly rode into so much fog that my protective eye glasses became useless, so I had to ride the rest of the way to town with them hanging around my neck. At least fog feels OK on my contact lenses.

It's supposed to stay pretty nice today until I get off work to ride home. Then rain. Edit: it poured on the 14 mile ride home. I'm getting better about it though, and didn't curse God or the universe in my wrath. In fact I didn't mind. That's a big improvement for me.

noglider 02-05-16 12:57 PM

I rode in on Tuesday and left my bike at work. I expect to ride it home tonight. I might get wet or muddy, and the bike has no fenders.

PatrickGSR94 i had a couple weird experiences liek that this week. A lady drove behind me forever. 2 cars honked at her and eventually passed her and other cars and me. I finally just pulled off and let her and the other 4-5 people she had held up. She could have passed many times but stayed behind. It made me nervous and I was glad to find a place to get off the road safely.

yesterday on the way home a woman had her moped laid down in a parking lot and was sitting on the curb. As I was riding by she was like "stop stop please help me!" I said "did you wreck?" she said "no, i am about to have a seizure. I feel a seizure coming on." I was like what i am going to do. she got real close to me and I was a little nervous as to what was going on.. She got so close that she almost knocked me off my bike. I helped her unhook her hat and stood with while she almost had a seizure. Hand and arm got stiff and started drooling a little. I was not sure what else to do.

It was sad that I had to think about stopping and attempting to help. (not the best neighborhood) but I am glad I did and was able to "help"

timvan_78 02-05-16 05:19 PM

dry this AM but it looks like I'm gonna get SOAKED on the way home again! All good though. It's longweekend Friday.

timvan_78 02-05-16 05:21 PM

I was in a meeting the other day with a co-worker from another department, and he says “I almost drove into you this morning.”

I guess he pulled out to his right to pass someone who was turning left. As he pulled around the stopped, left-turner--I was right there.

I had no idea.
I do recall a very close pass right after that, but from a car not matching his.

wphamilton 02-06-16 08:18 AM

One of my favorite things about Fridays is that it's casual day at the office, and when it's cool I just ride in my jeans. On the way home I don't even bother changing. Yesterday was like that. It's nice to sometimes just walk out to the bike and ride without all the prep.

I would have said "why, were you not paying attention to what's in front of you?" People sometimes say things like "I 'almost' hit you!!" when really they weren't even close. They just want to express their disdain for cyclists legally and safely using the roadway.

I had the VP of Technology say something like that, my third or fourth day on the job as a contractor years ago. I just laughed and said "No don't do that, I like this job". My supervisor happened to be there and told him we're keeping this one so don't run over him. So it can turn out to be a positive encounter sometimes.
