Had a motorist pull out on me this morning.

It’s dark, I’m cruising the FG about 20 mph smack in the center of the lane, rocking a bright headlight, flashing tail light and a highway safety vest. As I near an intersection, a full size pickup truck pulling a lawn service trailer starts to pull out from my right. I grab brakes, maybe 80-90% worth, and start yelling. The driver then hits the brakes too, with a surprised look on his face. Kinda like this --->  (yeah, it's funny now!)

We both came to a complete stop and the side of his front fender was about 10 feet in front of me. Happy ending. :thumb: :)

Just for the record, an Ortlieb City Roller pannier will easily fit a 15 pound turkey. It might almost even fit two of them.

It was a very nice ride in to work today the temp was 32f degrees when I left the house. There were many stars in the sky and very little clouds.

Last evening I could not find my way to riding today, but somehow all the obstacles that I had last night did not exist this morning. Yeah me!

mgw4jc 11-23-16 07:17 AM

Much lighter traffic this morning than usual. Schools must be out and a lot of folks off work. The normally busy highway was not busy, so I hopped on it for about 4 miles. Its flatness and my luck in hitting green lights meant a few miles at 20mph. It felt like there was a bit of a headwind until I took a right, but it my have just been my own wind resistance.

Have a Happy Turkey Day!

I was hoping to top 4,000 miles YTD this week, but woke up extremely dizzy this morning and decided that I better drive and go to the doctor. I've been having problems with this lately, apparently due to ear wax impinging on my ear drums. Weird. Ended up the week with 3,992 miles through today, but should top the majic number next week.

No doubt - the MUP was deserted and roads barely a trickle of traffic. 38F and rain probably contributed to lack of riders. I put the Moose Mitts on today - it's time!

Woke up to 33 degrees, snowing and a few inches of slush on the roads. Decided to ride my Cujo in. The plus tires were awesome. No slipping or sliding. Stayed pretty warm and dry until the last mile and a half where the standing water was pretty persistent. From the knees down I was soaked and it was running down the shin into my hiking boots soaking my feet. Definitely need to look at some fender options. Stretches of road with untouched snow were just a blast to ride on. My wet clothes are hung up with a fan blowing on them in the corner of my office. Should be good for the ride home. Have a quick stop at the liquor store on my ride home. Expecting it to snow/rain all day.

40F, gray, wet. Historically the next 2 weeks are the coldest of the year so curious to see how those shape up.

Monday evening, I rode from work to my mother's place (RIP) so I could go through her stuff, divide it among the recipients, and throw away the rest. Monday was that insanely windy day. I left my bike there and rode home in my wife's car. Riding into the wind on the riverside was like riding under water. It made me see us winter bike commuters as a special foolhardy group. I don't know why we do it.

I might pick my bike up this evening.

Yesterday was incredibly windy as noglider mentioned. I had an errand to run before and after work so I rode a bit less than 30 miles through whipping wind. I was dressed properly but the headwinds were strong and the crosswind gusts were downright startling in a few instances. This morning was much better and I passed 6,000 miles for the year which gives me a sense of satisfaction. I haven't driven to work since a few icy days last winter and yes we winter commuters are a resilient, tough group.

brings back memories, you must be excited. hope your stuff dries out. I recall my overboots fitting nicely under my rain pants, but yeah, get some fenders installed

I don't know why we do it.

It's more fun.

Though I haven't yet started wearing warm layers even, so I shouldn't really talk about winter commuting.

yet another F***. I dunno, I gotta think about this.

So sorry to hear.

I don't know why we do it.
As we used to say about scuba diving in Lake Ontario from November through March, it feels so good when you stop?

Riding in tonight the streets were not deserted but close with very little traffic. Riding up an almost 4 lane road past the University, an SUV came up behind me, and even though he had plenty of room to pass he stayed behind me for a little too long, which from prior experience usually means they are thinking of something really stupid to do. Finally they pulled up beside me, yelled "Happy Thanksgiving!" waved and drove on. I thought that was very nice.

Wolfhaven 11-25-16 08:29 AM

Rode home Wednesday in a light rain with 34 degrees. Dressed for snow not rain. Need to get smarter. Stopped at a liquor store for a six pack. The bottles fit perfectly in my trunk bag.

This morning it was 32 and the roads were wet. Rode the touring bike and took it easy since i don't have the studded tires mounted yet. Was a nice ride with very light traffic. Supposed to get released early today and meet at a bar for a holiday drink. Luckily it's right on my route home.

This morning while kiddo played in the driveway, I installed a tallish 80mm stem and the Gerry Burgess rando handlebar that ThermionicScott sent me a few months ago. They don't look so far out of place as I'd have thought on a 1998 Cannondale with Ergos. This will bring my hands up and back and give me useful drops. It's what I think I want, hope it works out! I did not install the Cannondale Force 40 doodads. I'm going to save that til I know I'm happy with the fit.

esmith2039 11-28-16 06:56 AM

Windy but not bad temps. Just idiots that don't know how to use blinkers this morning, nothing unusual!

TheNormanRider 11-28-16 07:47 AM

59F this morning, but it felt colder. A light wind but not too bad. I haven't commuted on the bike to work for a while, almost a week. Felt good when I got in to the office. No incidents today, and morning traffic seemed to be a touch lighter than usual.

mgw4jc 11-28-16 07:57 AM

A nice long weekend off, but back on the bike this morning. 38F and a bit overcast. The next few days are forecast to be warm - lows in the mid to upper 50s and highs in low 70s. Odd.

I hop on a sidewalk for about 100 yards to avoid one busy highway. I get off of it when making a right into a shopping center. I've always been careful there because I just know cars turning right into the same shopping center entrance probably won't yield to me. Usually it is a non-issue as nobody is turning at the same time as me. But today 2 cars did so, basically right hooking me. But as I said, I'm always careful there and slowed down to let them go by and then fell in behind.

kim43235 11-28-16 08:35 AM

Failed clothing choice this morning. Thought it was going to be 30s but actually 40s. Had a nice ride with a tailwind and expecting same headwind in the evening. Expecting rain around 6PM or so hopefully I get home dry.

tarwheel 11-28-16 09:02 AM

Topped 4,000 miles commuting YTD on my ride this morning. Chilly, with temps around the freezing mark, but not much wind. Other than that, the most notable part of my commuting was catching nearly every freaking red light. It was uncanny, every light magically turned red right as I got close. It was like I had some sort of sensor on my bike tripping the signals. Rode 3 out of 4 days during the Thanksgiving holidays, about 115 miles total. Yesterday was a very pleasant 55-miler, but Saturday's 35-mile ride was torture with stiff winds and tired legs the whole way.

arsprod 11-28-16 10:09 AM

Wet... 43F and raining with pretty good headwind. I'm counting on that wind to carry me home

RidingMatthew 11-28-16 10:18 AM

Back on the bike after way too much food this weekend. I hope to get back down to comfortable weight ranges.. holding onto 7 pounds from Halloween to now. I am not riding as much or as often (PTO) so i think i have to cute back my consumption.

Ride this morning was in the low 30's/ high 20's and pretty fun considering I went for a run this weekend and legs have been sore for a couple days. (stairs OUCH OUCH OUCH)

Congrats @tarwheel on the commuting mileage. :thumb: I have found myself with more commuting mileage this year than total mileage for all of last year earlier this month. I have done more miles this month than last November so with the impending 2 days of .3 and .5" of rain I am thinking about driving for the next two days. If it was chances of rain vs all day heavy rain I would consider riding. I hope it does rain especially in western NC where they have been battling fires for quite a while now.
