Snow last night was supposed to fall after dark and melt before sunrise; wrong on both counts, ~4-5" of what is now wet/heavy. Schools closed, work optional. I may yet bike out to the office but I need to harass my 15 yr old into shoveling out what needs shoveling.

noglider 12-09-16 11:13 AM

I'm sure I would have had a nice time if I had ridden today (and earlier this week) but for some reason, I'm just not feeling motivated to ride. I suspect the spirit will move me soon.

bmthom.gis 12-09-16 11:23 AM

It was cold. Hovering around freezing - which I know for many of you that's a balmy day in paradise right now. Well, screw that..there's a reason I left the NE! But it was a good ride. Switched back to my old wheels on my commuter bc I could no longer stand the squeaky freehub of the wheels I were using. Also need to get a new axle for that set. I'll fix them up and save them for a nicer bike.

joeyduck good to see you are back at it!

I've went away for ~1 week, and now sick this week (so I've been driving)--haven't commuted in almost 2 weeks! grr.
Some snow here, which is unusual, so everybody automatically loses their minds.

14 this morning and that nasty wind was gone. Big plus. Put on thicker wool socks but they restrict my feet in my shoes too much. Took it easy and ended up unzipping the jacket part way to vent out the extra heat. Made the 11 miles without sweating. Big plus. Hard to read the afternoon's forecast. Some are saying it will warm up to upper teens, others are saying it'll be 10 when I leave work. It's the same ride either way.

Not sure how cold I'll continue to ride in. Next week will be a sub-zero test. I'll still ice fish and love to x-ctry ski in sub zero temps so why not keep biking? Usually in Jan and Feb the full moon brings clear skies and frigid temps. That's the best time to hit the ski trails about 9pm. Don't even need a headlamp for most of it. It's amazingly quiet and peaceful. Just need snow now. If the snow doesn't come I'll be able to cruise the river on my mountain bike with studded tires. Wonder if I could pull my ice fishing sled with the studded tires?

Oh man, this morning was about 7-8F, and icy, so I drove. I'm getting pretty ornery, since I haven't ridden since Monday.

I had a chance to walk a little on a MUP, saw a dude riding a sweet fatbike with bar mitts and a snowboarding helmet! I wanted to knock him off his bike and steal it (just kidding!).

Here's hoping for some sweet rides this weekend, and more chances to commute this coming week.

cold and windy!

41F /5C, steady rain, dark, Monday.

I had to take the car today as we are having snow this am and when I went out to shovel at 5:15 there was about 4 inches so far and still falling. I will not ride on snow and ice roads.

The good thing is I rode yesterday for about 3 hours. I was on the rail-trail and had to get off that due to having to many icy patches for my liking. Up until this morning there was barely any snow on the ground. Only patches on grass and such. Not so today.

Not too bad this morning at 41F. I felt a few rain drops on my way in, but it hasn't actually started yet. I'm just hoping it clears out by 5pm.

KCBikeCommuter 12-12-16 08:06 AM

It was around 18F/-8C as I left the house this morning. I was dressed about right for the conditions... a little cold to start, but then warmed up as the ride went along.

Tundra_Man 12-12-16 08:32 AM

Winter decided to show up. -6°F this morning. Light wind. We got 4" of snow on Saturday and for some reason the city chose not to plow, so by today all the pavement was rutted ice.

Rode my winter bike. Because of the sub-zero temps I threw a sweatshirt between my work shirt and my windbreaker jacket. That turned out to be a mistake as I was quite warm while I rode (lots of resistance on the winter bike) and by the time I arrived my work shirt was sweat soaked. Oops.

Saw three other riders out beside me. One was a regular commuter I see frequently. One was an obvious DUI/lost license situation. The third I think was cycling by choice, but I wasn't 100% sure.

Watching your weather head our way - 33F this morning and temps are dropping. Snow and rain last night and I'm glad it was above freezing this morning - I don't want to ride the studly tired bike any more than necessary!

Steely Dan 12-12-16 08:51 AM

we got about 6 inches of snow yesterday. the streets were pretty damn sloppy, snowy, slushy, icy, rutty, etc.

i'm glad to own a winter beast with studded tires. it was definitely the right horse for this morning's course.

I couldn't do it. Got up at 4:15, opened the back door, and saw a heavy cold rain coming down. I didn't see any signs of ice, but the rain was enough to send me back to bed. 6:30 it had lightened a bit but still too wet for me.

Working from home today.

ptempel 12-12-16 09:35 AM

^ I also thought to WFH if there was more than a light dusting of snow. The temp raised enough to 34F or so to turn into rain and wash the little bit of snow away. GWB sidewalk was also open so was good to go! :) I also had a hard time doing WFH since I was out all last week except for Monday. So already had some time off the bike with only two days on the road form home last week. Should be nicer later on today and go up to 47F.

Slush and cold rain in Boston. It was my first bike commute ever! On the plus side, the waterproof gear (forgot the booties) was well worth the money I spent on it.

Well, congratulations! Sounds like you're doing it right. Couldn't have picked a better day to start on; it can only get better.

14 when I left the house. Wind chill made it a bit nippy. The same I guy everyday at the bus stop ask me if I ride all the time. The cold sure does take it out of me though, need a nap midday after lunch but after the ride home I'm re-energized!

kellichou 12-12-16 03:15 PM

20F this morning when I got on the MUP at about 5:15. Great ride. Feels good to be back!

Abe_Froman 12-12-16 04:30 PM

Big snowstorm overnight...couldn't believe the new MUP I take to work was plowed already. Going to be chilly on the way home...19 and dropping.

Darth Lefty 12-12-16 04:34 PM

It was pretty unremarkable today, just glad I could be out for a ride at all.

trailmix 12-12-16 04:52 PM

Low 40s and raining. For some reason I really enjoy riding in the rain, I must have issues.
