17F as I left the house this morning. Temp was about the same as yesterday and I was dressed the same, but I felt a little colder today for some reason. Not bad though. The combination of moon/clouds in the sky made for a really pretty commute.

3... degrees... Last night's ride home took forever, we ended up with 4-6" of snow and while most of the roads and paths were cleared it was slow going. This morning all was clear but when they clear the MUP they inevitably create rutted ice - thank you schwalbe marathon winter tires. No problems other than ssssllllloooooowwwwww

Haha, it's a term for a news story hiding the biggest news under some other things to downplay it

Snowy here today, we got an unexpected snow day for the little man today. So he hung out with the grandparents and I went to the ER for an infection and the wife and daughter went to work/daycare.

Abe_Froman 12-14-16 09:56 AM

10F and sunny today. I think I really need to invest in some chemical toe warmers for my right foot...definitely some mild circulation issues.

On the fogging front: I chickened out on the motorcycle helmet and just cut a more substantial breathing hole in my balaclava..didn't make much difference. It appears my head got bigger over the last 10 years. :foo: Helmet is definitely on the small side. Seeing as how the goggles absolutely are not working out, I'll give the helmet a try. Then I'm moving onto the DIY respirator. :p

I think he meant this was the good part: ""I saw a mink running about outside my desk window yesterday and a hummingbird in the courtyard at the ER this morning. This goes with the owl which swooped in front of me last week. I live in a great place.""

Was a nice morning at 39F and no wind. I took some extra time to clean up the bike a bit. Still had some road grime from the rain last week. I also cleaned, lubed and reinstalled the BB. But its now creaking again. Yeeay... Its one of these:

Maybe I also need to put some grease on the sleeve ends. I think that's about the only place that I didn't put some white lithium greas on...

I have a creaky BB on my non-winter commuter

I think it may just be time to replace it though. I think I need to find a vise to get the darn thing out though....couldn't do it with just an adjustable wrench and the BB puller.

HardyWeinberg 12-14-16 10:57 AM

My bb also creaking this week. May be some wiggle in cranks, argh.

It was a pleasant ride this morning. Since it's winter and we talk about weather, today is a weird one, it's going to be in the fifties all day. The roads were wet from the dew.

Five gates open at Nimbus dam, which means Folsom dam is dumping. They went over their 60% limit thanks to rain the last couple weeks. In order to maintain surge capacity for flood control, they have to waste water we'll wish we still had next summer.

Back in the saddle today after two days of driving due to rain and appointments that required a car. Beautiful weather today with temps in the 40s and clear skies, before the big freeze moves in tomorrow. Highs are only supposed to be the low the 30s on Thursday and Friday here, with lows in the teens. I plan to ride as I don't mind the cold but the wind could be a challenge.

Tundra_Man 12-14-16 11:29 AM

Well, I hit my goal: 200 consecutive bicycle work commutes. Woohoo!

Temp was 8°F when I left the house, which was the projected high for the day. Head wind was blowing pretty good which put the wind chill well below zero. Thankfully it's not supposed to change directions until tomorrow morning so I should get a push home which will help as the air temps drop.

Now I've got to ride 5 more times to hit 205. I'm off work starting on the 22nd through the end of the year. If I can make it to 205 I'll only have driven to work 3 times in the last year (the last time being Feb. 5th.) Might get tough. We're supposed to get a good dumping of snow starting tomorrow, then by Sunday the actual air temp is projected to drop to -22°F.

Darth Lefty. That's what I thought, my wife hates how I understate my problems. Such as once we had a fight early in our relationship. I left, went home and went to a rugby match. I called her that afternoon and asked her to come over, stating that I hurt myself. I had blown out my ACL.

Anywho here is my ride this morning and some pictures. My morning rides are now about 600 meters.

Pretty good commute this morning (my third day commuting!). I think I may have overdone it so far though - my right knee has a spot of tendinitis going. Oh well. Commuting is already my favorite part of the day so I'll just work through it.

Weather wise - it's going to get cold this friday in Boston, meaning I'm gonna test out how well my bar mitts work.

noglider 12-14-16 01:27 PM

Last night's rides went nicely. I broke the way home into two rides.

Disappointed this picture didn't turn out so well.

I'm still not cold. Among the refinements I need to make to winter riding: I have to figure out how to peel layers off conveniently. I got hot, but I didn't want to stop.

You didn't ask but I've been there, when I started off car-free. It it doesn't feel better within one or two days, don't work through it. I did that, figuring it was just another twinge that would work itself out with exercise, but it got worse and suddenly. It took a couple of months to get back to 100%, pedaling with one leg and soft-pedaling on the other. It's better to back off before that point, if there's any choice. At the very least go half-speed and don't stress that leg until the pain is gone.

Yttrium 12-14-16 01:49 PM

wphamilton The weird thing is that I don't really notice it while riding or walking, it's only really noticeable when I do a squat i.e. standing up and sitting down. I had an experience similar to yours with my back last summer (the perils of being tall...) but I'd really hate to go back to the bus and add 25 minutes back to my commute.

Abe_Froman 12-14-16 01:56 PM

Tendonitis sucks. I think I am prone to it...or just have a habit of overdoing things. Probably both. I've had it in both knees from biking, elbow, shoulder from grappling. No fun, and yea when it gets bad, takes FOREVER to go away completely.

I ended up taking the bus home, much to my own dissapointment. Oh well, hopefully I'll be good to ride home tomorrow.

I've been at my job for a bit over a year. Today was the first day I rode to work.

I actually chose this day because I thought it was going to be a quiet one, including with my boss away.

But then I pass my boss in the corridor while walking to my desk with helmet in hand and he said "oh, do you ride to work?"
Me - "I did today"
Boss - "That's impressive"
Me - "Thanks" (with big smile)

Looking forward to the ride home now.

It's only about 6 Km each way, but I'm proud of myself all the same after a long hiatus.

Also, it's Summer and bloody hot.

Most gates open at Nimbus. All? Not sure, couldn't tell in the dark. The pool is filling.

Same temp as yesterday but felt cooler. Pushed too hard starting out and ran out of steam 3/4 on the trip. Looking forward to spring already but I know it's only going to get colder!

tarwheel 12-15-16 07:29 AM

Topped 40,000 miles total bike commuting on my ride to work this morning. Fireworks were exploding, cars honking their horns, confetti falling from the sky. It was spectacular! That's 64,500 kms for you metric types.

The cold front that has blanketed the North with snow is arriving in NC today, but it's a mere shred of its former fury. Temps were in the low to mid-30s on my ride to work and are supposed to be about the same on my ride home. I was a bit overdressed because the local weather forecasters were freaking out as if it was the coming of the next ice age. Tomorrow morning it could drop down to the teens, but I'm betting that it will bottom in the low 20s.
