warmer weather but am concerned about ride home

I had a great ride in this morning lower 50's and I had my clothing pretty dialed in. I saw a beautiful sunrise in my rear view mirror and over the lake this morning.
I also saw a big wild turkey (not driving a car but the actual bird) and I saw a deer. It was pretty cool to see both. :thumb: Tonight is 40% chance of showers might be testing out the Ortlieb Panniers for the first time in the rain.

I have over a 1000 miles riding so far this year. I think I have 500 miles in the month of March that is a good pace so far.

Uneventful misty commute, with some headwind on the last third of the way.

Ninja cyclists on the bike path are getting on my nerves again now that my morning commute is mostly before sunrise. Why is it so hard to get lights?!

arsprod 03-31-16 07:04 AM

Rain and 24mph headwinds. I rode about a mile and got on the bus - just not feeling it this morning. The ride home should be fun!

I guess some people think it's a death-defying act to ride a bike to work.

Yeah I hate how the general public thinks that cycling is some sort of crazy dangerous activity. But it's really not. Cycling is a relatively safe activity, even when done poorly.

Threat of severe weather today kept me off the bike. Hopefully I can get in a commute tomorrow, although the wind would have been more in my favor today. Oh well.

It was 1C/34F with a light rain. I was properly dressed for it but my new "waterproof" Helly Hansen shoes were untested. It turns out that they are waterproof and my feet were dry (but my ankles were wet from the water that got onto my socks): I am pleased.

More rain this afternoon but again, I have a ride home so my cycling won't be affected.

Tomorrow is the beginning of #30DaysOfBiking , let's do it people!!

A little rainy on this morning's ride with a mild head wind. Nothing too exciting.

Threw my hybrid up on my work stand last night with the intention of cleaning/lubing my chain. Been experimenting with chain saw oil thinned with mineral spirits. So far I've found it to work great as far as lubrication, but attracts a crazy amount of dirt. The stuff is pretty sticky. I think I'm going to have to thin it a bit more than I have.

Anyway, after I finished with the chain I decided to adjust the brakes. I'd been noticing that both front and rear levers have developed quite a bit of travel which I (correctly) assumed was due to to pad wear. While I was adjusting the rear brakes, I noticed the rear wheel was slightly out of true. So I looked into that and discovered that I had one spoke that was completely loose. Like no tension at all and would rattle when I wiggled it. Weird. Not sure what caused that but I'm glad I caught it.

Tightened up that spoke and trued up the wheel and it's spinning nice now. Always gives me a feeling of accomplishment on the next ride after I true a wheel to look down and not see any wiggle at all as it turns.

Nice ride this morning but that massive storm front has me wary. There is something exhilarating about riding through the forest path during a good storm, but risky. I'm going to look for a gap this evening, and probably stick to the high roads.

Temperatures were about 20 degrees warmer this morning compared to yesterday but it didn't feel like it due to high humidity. Pollen levels are getting ridiculous here and I'm actually looking forward to tomorrow being a rainy day (as forecasted). My bike was totally coated in yellow dust when I left work yesterday afternoon. We are having some of the nicest weather of the year right now but you have to keep all of your windows shut in the house and you get coated in pollen whenever you sit down outside.

Steely Dan 03-31-16 08:13 AM

i checked the radar before i left and saw a big yellow-orange-red blob headed straight towards chicago.

i said to myself, "if i book it, i think i can beat it".

and i did!

i had some very light pre-storm drizzle towards the end of the ride, but about 30 seconds after stepping into my office, the deluge started.

I don't think thinning it more will help. The mineral spirits may "thin" it initially to help it flow during application. But then those spirits evaporate away leaving you with straight bar oil, which is super thick and sticky as you noted.

Morning ride in with steady 20 KT winds was OK, getting ready to get exfoliated on way home by sand, winds are now 30 gusting to 43KTS so 35 MPH gusting to 48 MPH should be fun. At least the crosswind portion will blow me off the road rather than the middle of it should I loose concentration.

Rode in a bit later after a dentist appointment (look ma, no cavities!), so it was nice and quiet on the roads. Rode my fixie today, first time this year.

Good dental hygiene is the road to general good health.

I've ridden in fixed for the last two days. It's always more fun and interesting than on a multi-geared bike.

Outnumbered be careful! that sounds a bit dangerous

First ride in +2 weeks this morning (was away in morocco and spain).

Tires were low, and the handlebars were stiff to turn. I pumped up the tires and shot some 3-in-1 into the headset.Good to be back on the bike! Warm & sunny.

pacalolo 03-31-16 05:54 PM

Good safe rides today. Went in with a friend, came home alone. Had favorable winds from the south and set four PRs. My commute is 20 miles each way.

Outnumbered 04-01-16 04:25 AM

Thanks RidingMatthew crosswinds almost did me in but I made it.

baron von trail 04-01-16 06:16 AM

Still running slow as this is only my second commute this season. It took me about 1:20 to get in this morning. That's 10 minutes longer than my best time at the end of last year.

It was a nice ride. A little windy in the wrong direction but not too horrible. The wind should pick up a lot this afternoon. The ride home will probably see 20 mph winds according to the WC. Hopefully most of that is going to be at my back.

rhm 04-01-16 06:24 AM

Weirdly warm this morning, and really humid. It had just stopped raining, I think. I got so sweaty, it might as well have kept raining. Almost no car on the roads.

jrickards 04-01-16 07:14 AM

I started #30DaysOfBiking today with a shorter 5km commute in to work at -2C/28F. I took the shorter route because we had lots of rain last night and I was concerned that the longer route, 9km, would have lots of frozen puddles and since I have taken my studded tires off, I wanted to ride safe. There were a couple of frozen puddles anyway but not as many as there would have been.

The next 3 days (or nights actually) will have abnormally low overnight temperatures, down to -15C/5F but in order to keep up with #30DaysOfBiking , I'll choose to ride in the milder and sunnier afternoon conditions on the weekend, I'll have no choice on Monday unless, cough, cough, I feel a spring cold coming on.

Hey everyone, many of you already plan to ride 22 days this month, commuting, why not add a short ride each day on the weekend to make it 30.

KCBikeCommuter 04-01-16 07:16 AM

Cool and windy this morning. It was around 40F, but the winds made it feel colder. Had a school bus pull out in front of me this morning. I was traveling down a wide, 4-lane, low-traffic street and the bus was at a cross street with a stop sign. I'm lit up like a Christmas tree, but ALWAYS watch for vehicles pulling out from side streets. That seems to be when we're the most invisible to them. I had to hit the brakes pretty hard, but had time to stop. I yelled 'HEY' pretty loud, which did get the drivers attention. I only had a rear camera running, so this shows the school bus after it crossed my path and was continuing on.

Yesterday's ride home was a barn burner - 20+mph tailwinds! This morning it's cool again and negligible headwind though by mid day it's supposed to pick up again to mid 20's

PatrickGSR94 04-01-16 07:21 AM

Glad I skipped yesterday, I would have been caught in some pretty nasty hail near the office, I think, if I had ridden home. Since I drove I missed it altogether.

Uneventful ride this morning, unfortunately will have a little bit of a headwind going home.

Phil_gretz 04-01-16 08:46 AM

I took a different route in this morning, hoping to shield from headwinds. It worked, sort of. Along a roadway path, I came upon three toads. These are the first toads of the season. Good morning, toads.

Yesterday's tailwind-assisted ride home was a hoot!

Made it through the first week of sink-baths at work while the facilities team fixes the shower ventilation. They should be done late next week. Yay.

25 mph winds, most of it was at my back. That was nice.
