Cool (11C/52F), overcast (and threatening rain) and strong breeze that was a headwind for a decent part of the ride. Was physically tired so although I rode 22km including an added hill at the end, I took it easy and slow, 21kmh (instead of the 24-26kmh normal).
I'm hoping to head out to the cottage (locally referred to as camps) on Friday by bike, let's hope the rain clears by then. |
Pretty warm at 75F this morning. Good ride in though.
Except for that trash truck that pretty much ignored a stop sign. I saw him coming and could tell by his speed he didn't really intend to stop. I kinda think he couldn't actually see me either because of the large side view mirror. I figure if I can't see the driver's face he probably can't see me. I had just turned onto the street that had the right of way when I saw him coming so I just didn't really start pedaling and was going slow enough for him to turn on out in front of me. |
Oh yea, I broke 2,000 miles for the year last week. The year started off with some lower mileage weeks, but I've had 9 weeks in a row of > 100 miles, so that has been been a big boost.
I'd like to hit 5,000 again, but I'm a bit behind right now, especially knowing I'll have a week or two off at some point over the next 6 months. |

Nice morning - sunny, 63F, but when I got to my bicycle I discovered the rack was missing 2 screws both on the same side. Note to self... pay more attention to regular maintenance and stop ignoring rattles

The first non-torrential thunderstorm morning in Texas in far too long. Add in low humidity and 70-ish degrees made me feel sorry for the poor suckers at a standstill on the freeway. :-)

bike to work week finished, so all the little tents with people giving out free snacks are gone. Last week you could have had a "calorie-positive" commute. (caloric intake > calories burned)
Bike share is coming to the city in the next few months... |
Must be June. I've gotten the first "You're not going to ride in this heat, are you?!?" of the season.
|
I woke up to a flat Friday on my car. I haven't really started round trip bike commuting yet, and I skipped work for a long ride Wednesday so I wasn't planning to be back on a bike so soon, but I figured biking would be more fun than dealing with my car tire, so I rode the ~16 miles in. On my arrival, I saw everyone leaving the building - no power. Boss texted "work from home". So I headed back, very tired. Stopping for a conference call was nice.

I ended up being drawn into a race on the way home last night. We gunned it for about 10 miles, uphill. Several lead changes, but in the end he had a little more in the tank than I did and beat me to the top by a few lengths.
It sucked, but in a good way. :) Anyway, I rode in a little slower today, but still held my average. Nice weather: no significant wind, cool temps. Traffic was light on the roads and fewer people on the MUP than usual. I could get used to this. |
I thought yesterday afternoon's rain was going to stay south of me. The first half of my ride is primarily East. It was sprinkling lightly when I started. By mile 2 it was a little more steady. From there until about mile 6 I got pretty soaked. Then I turned North and soon there was nothing. Dry roads and a tailwind. I was mostly dry by the time I got home except for my socks.
I did have one person, driving the third in a series of cars passing me, give a nice long honk as they went by. I gave a friendly wave back as I'm sure they were just saying hello. Nice, pretty warm ride in this morning. About 72F and mostly clear skies. |
Heavy clouds this morning but only a light breeze and no rain, although light spitting in the last 5 minutes of the ride. Another good 45km ride in, 11C/52F, but a high of only 15C/59F this afternoon with the slight chance of sun.
Tomorrow morning won't be so nice though, forecast for 5C/41F with showers ("Feels Like" rating of 1C/34F) so I'll want a nice hot shower when I arrive. |
Nice morning commute, a little chilly at 59F but a decent tailwind
|
Nice morning - I love the warm mornings. I have been getting faster! In the last 2 weeks, I have noted at least 3 times I have made it door to door in less than 30 minutes. Thirty minutes used to seem unattainable but as I've gotten stronger, now I expect it. And I wasn't even trying to break a record this morning. Another cool thing - my neighbor and I left our houses about the same time. He used to drive to work - now that he is bike commuting, he has lost 30 pounds. I would be happy to lose 10. Okay, lots of random cycle-related thoughts here - back to work.

55F and light winds this morning. Quite enjoyable!

I left five minutes early today so I wouldn't have to rush. Got to the train station just as sweaty as ever, five minute early for my train. I seem to be unable to take it easy.

I've been heading in the opposite direction over the past month, with commuting miles increasingly hard to get with the continual rain, holidays and vacation. May was my lowest cycling miles in several years. Hopefully I'll get back on track this month, but I missed the first six days due to vacation. Today was my first commute or ride of any sort since May 29. Weather was warm and extremely humid this morning with lots of water on the streets from Tropical Storm Colin, the last remnants of why passed through here about 6:30 am. Thankfully, it's supposed to be sunny and dry for the rest of the week.
Welcome back! How was Yosemite? Photos? |
It's a really nice day here. There is a nice breeze, and it was behind me for most of the way. I love that. I'm doing some form of upper body exercise every morning now, and it seems to help me feel much better on the bike these days. I'm wearing brand new rock climbing shoes which are gigantic in the toe box. I'm using neither toe clips nor cleats, and I'm shifting my feet around on the pedals every few minutes to prevent me from putting pressure in any one place. It seems to help.
I changed the tires on my Bianchi Volpe to narrower, lighter tires, 28mm. They didn't make me faster, but the bike feels easier. I think it's a good change. I notice that I tend to gravitate towards a 14 mph pace. I checked my graphs from ridewithgps which confirms this strongly. Nothing wrong with that, but I want to improve my endurance, so I'll see about increasing that just a bit. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/kW...e=w725-h230-no |
I took a ton of photos in California, but none that are cycling related. We did a lot of walking in Yosemite National Park, Sierra National Forest and San Francisco -- more than 60 miles for the week. I'll try to post some photos on Flickr in the next few days.

Being summertime in Vancouver now, I decided to resume my favourite route to work yesterday, whereby I'm riding on riverfront paved/unpaved MUP for a good stretch of my ride in. Means about 10% longer distance and a rapid loss of 100m of elevation from my house to sea level (which I later have to climb back up and over to get to work), but well worth it for the peace and serenity.
Unexpectedly set two PR's and Top 10 Strava placings on this route yesterday (hadn't ridden the route since last fall). Took the same route again and decided to push it; KOM (out of 107 people) on the first segment (one mile, fairly flat paved road with just a set of train tracks to cross and a 4-way stop to slow down for). 4th overall (admittedly out of only 52 people) on the ~3 mile paved/unpaved MUP. Pretty happy as I'd smashed both of my previous PR's (including the ones I set yesterday). I've also ridden roughly double the miles so far this year as I had the same time last year. Feeling good :) |

Yesterday afternoon, before riding home from the station, I found my back tire flat. Totally flat, not just squishy. I pumped it up and rode home; by this morning it had only become a little squishy. I pumped it up and rode to the station. No doubt I'll have to fix it before long, but it's so hard to find the cause of a slow leak, I figured I'd leave it for a while.
|
Got up this morning and it was raining, so I did not throw the bike on the rack and just drove the car all the way in. By time I got closer to the lake the rain stopped and the high winds were already drying the road. Now I am sad I did not ride today :(
|
Yesterday's forecast for today wasn't far off, it was 4C/39F, a headwind for much of the ride (resulting in a "Feels Like" of 0C/32F which seemed about right) and a sprinkling of rain the whole way. This is not June weather, even for here. The rest of the week is to be a bit better but still single digit (Celcius) morning temperatures although not quite so severe. I had to get out my early spring kit. On top of that, I guess it was just the buffeting of the wind against my rear panniers but it felt like my rear tire was really soft and the tire was flopping back and forth but it was fine the whole way. What a day it would have been to have a flat though.
Hope your day is warmer than mine! Off to the hot shower I go. |
A glorious morning with low humidity and low 60F temps. It felt chilly compared to yesterday and the past week or two really. Just right for a morning ride.
|
Woah, had to dig out some gear I'd packed away thinking I was done with cooler weather - 51F t this morning. I guess it is still spring... summer on the brain
|
Was a nice sunny 61F this morning. I wore a baselayer under the jersey and knee warmers. Chose the warmer option since it will rain later on today. Have another case of creaky bike even after I pulled and cleaned both the bottom bracket and seatpost last week. Yeeay...
