36-38F, sunny. Nice sunrise on the dissipating fog. Wednesday night I stayed up late (for me) watching the Cubs and overslept 90 min yesterday; last night, stayed out late (for most people w/ kids), 1am, seeing a band in the Big City, woke up this morning at 4am by the furnace turning on. Should be a great day!
ps-> still shorts, short sleeve shirt, coat, fingerless gloves |
I almost rode over a rat the other day on the way in. Not-so-little bastard ran right out of the grass and across the MUP, his long tail right in front of my approaching front wheel.
|
Very nice ride. Cool but not cold. Fall colors. Not a cloud in the sky. 5-10F warmer and it would have been perfect ride. Which means the ride this afternoon probably WILL be perfect.

It was beautiful this morning, about 42F, pretty chilly, but I was dressed to be warm enough. I do need to find my cycling gloves, though, and I'm considering buying bar mitts for colder temps.
I have been getting off the MUP a bit earlier, and riding surface streets to my job, because of a couple weird encounters with coyotes who don't seem afraid of people much at all. |
The ride in this morning was nice with the temp at 32f degrees when I left the house. With the earlier sunrise I was getting a little light when I was riding not much though as I arrive at work by 6:10a. I will also now be cutting the 16 mile route home short due to the sun setting at 4:31. I know I have twenty minutes after sunset to get home before dark but I am not a fan of riding in the afternoon darkness. The morning darkness when no one is out with me is fine.

first ride in after dark. A bit chilly, you know, in the 60's.
|
I felt like I was late when I saw how light it was at 6:45am. I could have worn my regular sunglasses but put on my clear ones out of habit. Kinda chilly at 43F, but still wore the shorts. Jacket and gloves were enough up top.
The little bit of a scratchy throat that started on Thursday morning has evolved into full-fledged cold. All plugged up this morning. Ugh. |
Light winds, quite roads and 48F for the commute this morning. Pretty nice morning.
|
40F but I didn't have to use my headlight - I like that!
|
0C, a little snow/rain but otherwise uneventful commute. Sucks, that this time of the year I have to ride home in the dark.
|
After daylight saving time ended, the sun was already up at 7:30AM. It will be darker quickly on my way home though.

Nice morning. As a bonus, I think I saw Rodney Dangerfield walking on the bike path.
60ish guy, round shaped, crazy plaid pants, polo shirt, sandals, carrying a golf club down the path in 45 degree weather. He even slightly resembled Dangerfield. |
42F this morning, I too felt like I was late, seeing the light of dawn starting to appear at the eastern horizon at 5:30am! The weather was great, and it was a calm, uneventful ride--the best kind.
And lately I've been hopping off the MUP, head through surface streets, at the end of my ride. There is a steep hill with a speed bump that has been tough for me--I've almost eaten it a couple times, and so had to get off and walk the bike. Walk of shame, I call it. Until THIS morning! I was able to gear down enough, ease my wheels over the speed bump, and crank my behind up, up the hill without stopping! Woo! And when I got to the stop sign at the top of the hill, I said good morning to a couple pedestrians, who stonily ignored me. Oh, well. I thoroughly enjoyed my ride. |
I'm always riding in the light in the morning...I don't start till 9am. Evenings have been dark from the beginning of my ride well before daylights savings time ended though. I really need a better headlight for the MUP I take part of the way. Any recommendations?

Just when I had gotten used to riding to work in the dark for my morning commute, the time changes. Now I'll have to get used to riding home in the dark. Nice ride this morning, despite the time change, with a tailwind much of the way. I rode my cyclocross bike and made good time. The ride home is likely to be slower, as I'll be heading into the wind and it will be dark. Temperatures were just about perfect for me, mid-40s, and are supposed to be only 10 degrees warmer this afternoon. Morning lows are supposed to reach the 30s tomorrow, our coldest yet -- but the latest I can ever remember without a freeze.

A little less than halfway to work, my rear derailleur exploded, disabling my bike. I hobbled back home gently. For the first time in 40 years or so, I left the bike at the bike shop for repairs. I'm not enjoying all this wrenching, and I might as let them do it this time. I asked for a new derailleur and possibly a new headset.
I went to the subway so I could get to work super late. The subways stopped running. Someone was hit and killed by a train. Horrible. They halted service, and who knows how long that will last. Well, it looks like I'm not supposed to get to work today. I'm back home again. |
Took the longer-but-faster-more-level route again and this time braved crossing the scary merge. There was enough traffic today that they were slowing going into the merge and it was all okay. Run time was about the same as the shorter route with climbs. Not near a record for the morning run, but within normal range. Especially considering how much riding I've missed this year.
I tried to make a Strava route out of it but it generated some spurious spurs that added about 0.3 miles. You can't fix this in their route creating tool. I also tried doing it by hand but it seems laser focused on putting me on a certain stretch of road that's well off the actual path and I can't figure out why. |
A little humid but nice nonetheless . I also run a couple of errands on the way home.

The commute in this am was nice with the temp at 29f degrees and clear skies. Mostly uneventful until some one in a car tried to pass on the right side of another car(hey, I am right here). Revving his motor he was not able to pass until he got beyond me. It happened very fast so it was all over in a split second it seemed. |
Yesterday felt like my first winter commute. When I left my office it was a sunny afternoon, almost warm riding the CitiBike to Penn Station. Got on my train and promptly fell asleep, and next thing I knew the sun was setting behind a rapidly moving panorama of suburban nj. By the time I got off the train, the sky was dark but for a band of orange along the southwest horizon, one bright planet and a half moon above it.
Wasn't until I got home that I realized my tail light wasn't working. Loose connection, I found it eventually, but those things are hard to diagnose. For the next six weeks I'll be watching the sunset from the train window, disappearing a little earlier every day, and riding home in the dark; and then the process will reverse itself. There will come an evening, a few months from now, when I'll see an edge of the sun just disappearing over the trees when I get off my train, and I'll know it's almost spring... but for now, it feels like it's going to be a long winter. |
So the weather said the rain would be south and east.. liars! Rode the fenderless bike anyways got a little spray but not bad. Perfect temp and little wind. Alot more traffic today must be due to voting.
|
59F with a slight breeze from the north to make it feel a bit cooler. Wore my long sleeve base layer, but went in shorts anyway. Uneventful ride to work. I managed a small victory at the intersection where the light tends to give me problems. A truck was ahead of me and triggered it, giving him the protected left turn green arrow. I didn't think I'd make it because I was far back but it stayed solid, and I got to pass through. I'll take what I can get!
|
Cold for the part one of my commute - home to gym. About 37F but I went with shorts anyway and just suffered. I was only cold on the downhills. I felt a lot warmer going from gym to work, probably because I had gotten plenty warm working out.
Traffic seemed a bit lighter, but I'm sure I still managed to slow some people down. Sorry. Not sorry. |
Several appointments today so no ride. I feel lost

Coldest commute of the autumn so far, with temps in the mid-30s. I love these temperatures because it's easy to dress for and usually warms up to the 60s or low 70s by afternoon. I also sweat a lot less.
Rode my cyclocross bike for the second day in a row, and my commute speeds have been much faster than while riding my touring bike. Yesterday was my fastest commute in a while, aided by a tailwind in the morning and a pressing deadline in the afternoon. I had left my car for its annual service and inspection at the VW dealer, which closed at 6 pm, so I had to really book it to get there before closing. I made it with 5 minutes to spare. The VW employees were amazed at how far I bike commute and were blown away when I told them that I cycle about 3,000 more miles each year than I drive. |
Rode to the polling place to be there when the doors opened at 7:00. Stood in line for about 20 minutes after voting started. Did my best to avoid condoning evil. Because of this I made it to work 15 minutes late, which I'll just compensate for by staying 15 minutes late tonight. I have a feeling the polling places will be jammed full at 5 PM which is why I decided to get it over with early.
The last few nights I started preparing the winter bike for the season. It's needing a major overhaul: chain, cassette, crank, pedals, brakes, cables and housing. I probably can save the derailleurs and wheel hubs, but I'm not sure yet. I have a big pile of extremely rusty parts on the garage floor. The ice-melt chemicals they put on the road here just destroy everything in a surprisingly short amount of time. I was on the edge of just buying a different bike instead of fixing this one, but I couldn't yet bring myself to throw the old one in the landfill. We've spent too many miles together. |
What a great ride today! First time I have gone to vote by bike, so I got to explore a different route to work after. It was nice enough - a 1 lane back road with a moderate amount of traffic. I pass by a Krispy Kreme so I took advantage of that and got my free donut. Ended up being slightly longer, by about a mile, but was a nice day for a ride.

On my way out of my neighborhood, headed to the polls, I was buzzed by a BALD EAGLE!
