First day back from a short weeklong vacation. The kids have soccer camp at a park about 1.5mi from our house so I rode with them to help figure out the route and get them signed in. That was nice.

FunkyStickman 06-27-16 12:56 PM

Passed 2 other cyclists this morning on my way to work... I think this may be a first! One older guy on a hybrid, with a hi-viz vest, and a young guy on a MTB (shirtless, at that) who was weaving around the lanes.

I was hauling full panniers with 3 days of food and a 17" laptop... back end of the LHT had to have weighed more than 50 pounds. Good news is the newly rebuilt (by me) rear wheel held up just fine once the spokes settled in to some actual weight.

I love riding my bike.

We drove to my workplace with our bikes on the back of our Jeep, took hers off and she rode 2km along a quiet MUP to her workplace (I followed to make sure she didn't run into any problems, I then rode back to mine afterwards) and then she'll ride back to my workplace at the end of the day and wait for me to finish about 15 minutes after she gets to the Jeep. We plan to do it this way for the next couple of weeks and then we'll switch to a 5km route that we can both ride from home to work (5km for her, 8km for me unless I go for a longer ride after "dropping her off" at her workplace). And then we'll work up to the 6km route which is actually the easiest for both of us, my distance will be 9km.

Her journey to fitness and weight loss has begun, luv ya hon!!

That is great news, I am glad to her she is joining the ranks of us. I think she has a good support base to learn from!

Beautiful... despite some bruised ribs I took the new old bike and took the long way through the valley.

The full squish was great as it did keep me from getting banged up any more... and man does she climb well.

Nice to see you around @sixty fiver, why the bruised ribs? Though I suspect somewhere else is an explanation.

I like the gary Fisher and its color scheme.

Sixty Fiver 06-27-16 04:29 PM

Joey - Figured that at 50 a little carbon and a little squish was a good thing...

It's been a while since I posted on the commute thread....
Anyone familiar with Holland MI? The major north/south road, US-31, is under construction this summer and that's throwing all normal traffic patterns off. This week my cross road is closed so I'm forced to take an alternative...what a mess! My half hour commute turned into a 45 minute ordeal just waiting to get through the stupid traffic lights. I did figure out that by going straight through a light and then doing a u-turn in a parking lot will save me from a lot of frustration of trying to make a left into solid traffic.

GeneO 06-27-16 09:49 PM

Been a while since I posted too.,

Commute was great compared to 35 mi in the 100F heart index on Saturday! High 80s to low 90s and 34 mi RT with a nice breeze of 10-14 mph was very pleasant.

jrickards 06-28-16 04:35 AM

Another morning of commuting with the wife. She has a bit of a hill up to the bike rack area and gets winded on the way up but she's trying. A few more rides and she'll be up it lickity-split (and I'll be winded keeping up with her).

Another beautiful sunny morning although much cooler, 11C/52F, than yesterday.

Phil_gretz 06-28-16 05:19 AM

^ Congrats to you and your wife. You're a good team.

My ride was wet this morning. It must've poured buckets last night. Water levels are swelled, and humidity was 100%. What a sweaty ride.

Aaannndd, the at work showers HAD NO HOT WATER this morning. Yay! At least I was cooled off thoroughly. I'm not complaining, really.

It's like what they say about a bad day fishing...

essiemyra 06-28-16 05:27 AM

@essiemyra - that's funny. Glad to hear you got off with just a warning.
Right, who needs a speeding ticket.

I was not able to bike today as it was raining this morning.

mgw4jc 06-28-16 06:24 AM

Quite the humid morning after some overnight showers. Not horribly though as temp was tolerable.

A few more folks on the MUP than usual, which means I saw about 5 compared to 0 or 1 usually. I'm only on it for about a mile and it's in a residential area.

RidingMatthew 06-28-16 06:35 AM

good ride

It has been a while for me to post as well. (so far this month 532 commuting and 721 total miles) Just been pedaling along....
Two funny incidents.
I rode from work last night to a friends they are out of town and we watching the pool. :thumb: So cleaned the pool and when I was getting ready to head home it started to rain. So I had changed out of a wet swimsuit into my lycra and then got sorta wet again on the way home. Gentle rain and not thunderstorm thank goodness. Pretty funny to watch people pass a guy on a bike with lights and hi viz panniers. they just stared..:roflmao2:

this morning I passed a couple riding I see usually every morning on the greenway. This morning I passed but did not keep the pedal down (16-17 mph) and they caught up. I looked in my mirror and saw they were right behind me. So I picked up the pace. (18-19mph) I moved over but they did not attempt to pass. We were cruising along like a little train. When I turned off the guy of the couple said "thanks." Kinda fun to bike along with some people on the way in.... usually it is so solitary and quiet.

scottsmith 06-28-16 07:12 AM

Today was the first time I've had both the chance & motivation to bike commute in 2016 and it was everything I knew it could be ;-)
Also my first commute to the new (slightly farther) office. 34km now instead of 28km.

Aside from slightly warping the front wheel (not enough to rub the brakes when slack) and slowly loosing air in the back tire (not enough to stop & refill), the ride went well.

Courteous drivers, a few other cyclists out, beautiful weather. So nice!

Tundra_Man 06-28-16 07:28 AM

Absolutely gorgeous morning. 55 degrees, which was a little chilly when I first left but turned into the perfect temp about 4 miles down the road. Winds hadn't yet come up and were very light at about 6 mph. I took the extra long way to work and logged 18+ miles.

Calculated out my average speed and was surprised to find that I was at 17.04 mph across the entire ride. Compared to my usual "angry turtle" speed, that's moving pretty good for me.

rhm 06-28-16 07:32 AM

Headlight weirdness this morning. It's a dynamo light and I just leave it on all the time. It does not have a flashing mode. But today it was flashing in a most annoying manner, and the flashing was mostly synchronized with my pedaling. There must be a short somewhere. I stopped and futzed with the wires several times, enough to make me miss my train, but not enough to fix the problem. Looks like the bike will need a bit of attention before I ride it on the NJ Arrow next month!

KD5NRH 06-28-16 07:43 AM

New PR on the big hill on the way in. 32nd out of 34 on the leaderboard, and I suspect the top 31 were either in or training for the Firecracker or the Cross Timbers Sprint Tri. Either way, I doubt they were riding hybrids with full panniers. Cadence meter is definitely helping, as is finally getting my legs to the point where I didn't need the granny ring.

Wolfhaven 06-28-16 08:19 AM

Nice and cool low 50's ride this morning. Grabbed what I thought was a lightweight windbreaker. Sweated my fanny off. Won't need it for the ride home. Should be 70's and sunny this afternoon. Very little traffic, almost eerie. Could handle that every day. Will log over 500 miles this month.

arsprod 06-28-16 08:24 AM

A cool 65F this morning and after a not so good weekend (crashed my race car) getting back on the bike felt incredible - problems melted away

no motor? 06-28-16 10:54 AM

Nice ride in this morning, it was nice and cool. Cool enough to cool down outside instead of inside, and who would have expected that in late June?

Darth Lefty 06-28-16 11:01 AM

It was 80F here by 8am... it's going to be a scorcher. I'm sad not to be riding but don't want to ride in 108F this afternoon so I'm at peace with it

Today's interaction with a jackwagon in a Ford F-150: I am coming down a major arterial street, he is sitting at a stop sign on the smaller cross street. As I approach the intersection, he pulls out aggressively. I yell "HEY!" He stops but flips me off as I go by. I see him pull into a parking structure so I go and ask what's the deal.

Me: Dude, what's the deal? Why'd you flip me off?
F150: You yelled at me.
Me: I yelled at you to pay attention and not kill me.
F150: I didn't see you.
Me: I KNOW.

PatrickGSR94 06-28-16 01:53 PM

Not too bad this morning, a little cooler after the rain and cold front yesterday. Lower humidity today (good), but that means head wind going home this afternoon (not good).

joeyduck 06-28-16 02:07 PM

Yesterday I had another day that I wished I could ride. It honestly took me 35 minutes to travel 500 yards. I left work 30 minutes before I needed to get my daughter from her daycare which was 15 minutes by car away. I finally got there after 50 minutes, 20 minutes late. I am still waiting for my daycare woman to let me know how much in late fees I owe.

I also got a sunburn in the car! I never got burnt on the bike ride home.
