I think today is the last of the unseasonably warm weather so I'm going to enjoy it! Got called a f@#$%ing a-hole on the ride home yesterday. I pulled into an intersection with a car coming up on the left - I saw him coming and knew I could make it across though he was going way too fast and wasn't paying attention to the flashing light that signaled the trail crossing (or anything else for that matter). I probably deserved his curses but I know I scared the crap out of the guy so it was worth it!

How did I get here? How do I work this?

This is not my beautiful stapler, this is not my beautiful chair!

First commute since my little surgery in September! Feeling ok. I scouted a new route, clockwise around the east side of the reservoir on a major artery instead of CCW on the bike trail. It's further, but fewer elevation changes, so time should be a wash... except that I chickened out at the end and rejoined the MUP instead of trying to jump across the traffic merging from the artery to the freeway, a hundred cars dueling at 55 and then accelerating through the turn. There's a bike lane there, but it looks like cold comfort. (The construction in the photo has ended.) That probably added a mile, making it a longer ride. Maybe I'll nerve up in the future. Not sure yet if this will be my new route. There are many more stoplights, but some of them are the far side of a T intersection and I could blow through them. The bike lane along the artery is cluttered with debris, but it's satisfying to move faster. Weather, since it's the topic of the season, was cool and clear.

Glad you live to ride another day! Be careful out there, friend! We enjoy your posts. Glad you taught him a lesson about zoning out in his steel box (?).

70F this morning with heavy, low clouds. Not the threatening kind, just....clouds. :) Barely got 50 feet from my apartment when I came upon the very flattened body of a bunny on the street, and I mean FLAT! Wife's gonna be devastated when I tell her about it later tonight. Uneventful ride to the office, but I did zip by another cyclist in the park going the opposite direction, and I barely saw him cause he had no lights, reflectors, or high-viz clothing on. Just some dude in jeans and a shirt on a cruiser or something. Not really smart to be riding stealth in the dark. Had to run the same red light from yesterday; damn thing just won't trigger for me! Oh, I remembered on the way in - Oklahoma put in to effect the Idaho stop for cyclists just yesterday. Less worry now with all the stop signs, but I'm always cautious anyway. Final note - when I parked the bike in the office I found my ebike's odometer to be at 990 miles, so I'll definitely hit the 1,000 mark when I get home this afternoon.

10degC and raining. Same as it ever was, indeed.
New fenders finally arrived last night, so installed them immediately-SKS Raceblades! This after being wet for the entire month of October. I'll have webbed feet soon. |

@Darth Lefty - I favor longer routes to avoid traffic situations and otherwise less desirable roads. Just do it!
Two happenings on my commute this morning. First I must have not turned off my headlight after riding in yesterday morning. Battery was dead; wouldn't turn on at all. Luckily I recently purchased a headlamp to use on a camping trip. It came with batteries too. So I went back inside, opened it up and put it on. It was bright enough to get me to work. Then, about 3 miles from work, this one road I take usually has very light traffic. But I see tons of cars on it and assume the main highway just south of there must have a wreck or detour or something. I had to wait a bit to turn right and was worried about the volume of cars that would be going around me. But that concern disappeared when about a quarter mile down the road the cars were backed up and not moving/barely creeping due to the upcoming stop sign - 1.25 miles away! This is a two lane (one lane each direction) quiet country road with no shoulder. Therefore I did about 1.25 miles of in the grass riding, passing cars like they weren't moving (oh wait, they weren't). The attached map shows the straighter Highway 73 with red on it. The more curvy road just above that is my normal route. It has the dark red traffic indicator on it. The grass was wet from the dew and now my bike has grass and leaf clippings caked on it. Looks like a cleaning will be on tonight's schedule. |
Rained right before left this morning. Humid and 60F riding. I wore too many. Sweaty than usual but safely arrived at work. Expecting tailwind this afternoon which will be awesome.

Got to ride my bike today. It was a good day.
... for the 173rd work day in a row. :) |
Well I was wrong about the end of the warm weather - 61F this morning though wet from overnight rains. Still spitting/drizzling but with the warm temps and wet everything the smells were fantastic. I enjoyed them after about 30 mins of riding in the dark, because I forgot to charge my headlight
|
63F this morning, with wet roads and lots of puddles thanks to last night's rainstorm. Very grateful to have fenders. I need to re-adjust my headlight, it's pointed down too much. Muscles began to feel pretty sore midway into the ride. I think tomorrow I'll drive to take a break, and then do a long distance ride Saturday morning at the trails on the road bike. One last thing - I turned over 1,000 miles on the ebike yesterday afternoon.

arsprod... ditto here in KC. Except my headlight was charged...
Both my wife and daughter received hail damage from the thunderstorms that rolled through yesterday afternoon. Not sure I remember having a thunderstorm that powerful in November before. |
Commuter is down! Rebuilt the hubs on Tuesday evening and now the freehub body is making a horrible grindy noise, and my axle might be bent. I'm taking off early to hit up my LBS. My girl there said she might could fix the current FH or just order me a new one. I have a wheelset I can use in the meantime - just gotta pull my cassette from the current one. So either way, I'll be back up and running tomorrow, though doubt that I will commute.

Nice. 40F. First sun, then light fog. 100% clammy all the way though. Standing water hasn't gone anywhere in the last month.
|
I'm home sick for the third day in a row, and tomorrow might be another. I have a mild fever and lots of icky stuff clogging my sinuses and chest. So I haven't ridden.
I get a little bit of strength in the middle of each day to work on my Raleigh International which I'm rebuilding with an indexed drivetrain. It's going slowly, but I think I'll get it rideable today. The dynamo lights already work. After that I plan to put on a rack and fenders. |
Today 200 commuting days for the year, it looks like I'll finish up without driving in. It's been amazingly mild weather this fall, and I've only needed arm-warmers yet for the cool mornings.
|
Good for you. I overslept this am by 90 minutes (after the baseball game) and feeling squeezed between that and an early evening engagement I thought about driving but didn't. Really need to sell the 2nd car, it would help to quell those thoughts earlier in the game.
|
TGIF, I am done. The ride this morning was the same as usual so it must have been nice. The temp was 44f degrees with starry skies. But somehow I do not feel up to today.
|
Great finish to a good week of commuting. I'll be less happy next week when it turns dark on the ride home.
|
Some light rain and wet streets when I left this morning. Biggest bummer there is I just cleaned my bike last night. So I'll be doing that again sooner than later.
A bit warmer this morning at 60F and a high of 70 expected. We're taking the kids camping this weekend and it's supposed to get down to 40 at night, so maybe a bit chilly. |
"Hey call out when you pass" - Um, no. Not when you're that erratic, wobbling over both sides of the path and apparently oblivious. I'll not give him a chance to mess up and randomly ride into me. :twitchy:
|
Light rain and wet streets in Raleigh as well. Like mgw4jc, I had recently cleaned all of my bikes, so my Bob Jackson had a very brief period of looking nice and shiny. Wet streets with fallen leaves on them can be a dangerous combination for slipping, so I was careful on the corners. We are finally supposed to get more seasonal weather starting today, after near-record high temperatures the past few days.
