Had to leave really early this morning so rode totally in the dark... and it was really dark. Practice for winter

Hurricane Matthew put the hurt on North Carolina, and many inland areas suffered more damage and problems than the coast. We had 6-10" of rain in my county and some areas had more than 15", with major flash flooding on Saturday and large downstream floods expected all week. Lots of trees down but nothing compared to Hurricane Fran 20 years ago. Several trees were blocking roads on my way to work but I was able to get around them. Fortunately I didn't encounter any flooding on my route today.

I will be having to work offsite for the rest of the week, so probably won't be able to bike commute after today.

Glad you're safe. mgw4jc what about you?

mgw4jc 10-10-16 01:21 PM

We had a lot of rain between Friday and Saturday, no crazy winds. I did see some trees down on my Sunday morning ride and when getting out and about later that day. A couple of really big trees too. One tall, mature tree fell toward the road and put some debris out there. But if it had fallen the other way, a house would have been squashed.

F'in fantastic! I'm originally from upstate NY and now live in central NC. I swear it has been sunny and in the upper 90s since April. I am really photosensitive and I'm happy with it in the 70s. With the hurricane having blown through, we're having drastically cooler weather.

LOVED riding in this morning, even need a light jacket.

essiemyra 10-11-16 04:49 AM

It was a chilly 34f degrees when I left the house this morning with dark starry skies. A very nice uneventful ride.

At work the shower had only cold water. After finishing my shower and getting dressed I did let maintenance know about the hot water not working. The maintenance guy just told me there will be hot water in ten minutes.

49F / 9C Getting chilly out there. I spent a few minutes this morning trying to dig out the cold weather gear.

Phil_gretz 10-11-16 05:17 AM

My forecast said 43 degrees for this morning, dcb23. Maybe if I used a thermometer, I'd be more accurate.

Either way, it felt chillier finally. I wore long tights for the first time, too. The ride was pretty nice, and I look forward to the cool crispness of Fall.

Boy, am I glad to be a bike commuter!

mgw4jc 10-11-16 06:16 AM

45F this morning - what happened to some inbetween hot and cold? I still wore shorts though. And it's still pretty dark when I leave at 6:55ish. I pulled out my reflective suspender deals this week. I know they help for visibility in the dark.

Kinda wishing I had a hot chocolate right about now...

Cooler weather gave way to mid 70's yesterday. Didn't commute because I had errands to run but managed to get in a fantastic mountain bike ride in after work. Woke up this morning to 60 degrees which is supposed to be the high for the day. Hoping to beat the rain that's due for the ride home. Forty's for a high tomorrow with rain.

jrickards 10-11-16 07:04 AM

Very cool morning, especially wearing cycling shorts but I survived it. 4C/39F, but clear and sunny as I ended up leaving a bit later than normal. It was especially cool on the last stretch as I headed down the hill to the level of the lake, there must have been dampness in the air that was making it feel cooler. I wore cycling shorts and short wool socks but my tops were: thin merino baselayer, long-sleeved jersey, wind-proof gillet/vest and long fingered gloves on my hands and a Buff under my helmet.

After last week's commutes in the 30s and 40s, so far this week has been quite pleasant in the low 50s. Sounds like that will change tomorrow as we're supposed to dip below freezing. They're talking snow for portions of the state by the end of the week.

KCBikeCommuter 10-11-16 07:36 AM

Looks like this will be the last warm-ish morning for a while. 57F when I left this morning, and a pleasant commute to work.

I passed 3 folks as I crossed over the Missouri River today. I normally I have the Heart of America Bridge MUP all to myself, so it was nice to see others using the bridge. However, it was very dark this morning and none of them (a walker, a jogger and a biker) had any lights or reflective gear on at all. My headlight is quite bright, but I almost didn't see the walker at all... dressed in dark clothes from head to toe!

Johnny Mullet 10-11-16 08:35 AM

Very cold. Probably sweat on the ride home.

kim43235 10-11-16 08:43 AM

My first ride to work today. Took 50 mins for a 12-mile ride. Bit cold but wan't too bad. Feel little lightheaded though. Another 12 to go after work!

I've been bike commuting for years, and you're already faster than I am. I hope you don't think 50 minutes is a bad time. I hope, instead, it's 50 minutes of pure enjoyment. Or at least a lot of it.

groovestew 10-11-16 09:29 AM

We had 3 inches of snow this past weekend, but most of what fell on pavement melted on contact, and by this morning, all paved surfaces were clear and dry. First sub-freezing commute this fall. I rode a multi-geared bike for the first time in two months this morning.

Looks to be a little over 14 mph average if my math is good? (50/60=.833, 12/.833=14.4). That's good. Especially considering lights, traffic, hills, etc...

Was 48F and a good park and ride in for me today. Did a half loop around Central Park this morning. Kept the gear low and spun the cranks like Chris Froome. :)

Not at all. I am very proud of myself :)
In fact my route is a very straight road with only 4 traffic lights and 3 stop signs in a 12-mile ride.
I am sure I would enjoy the ride more next time but today I was in a survival mode.
Thanks for a kind word!

Hey, Kim, make sure you have some breakfast and water before riding out; could be why you have that light headed feeling. Just a thought; glad to know you're bike commuting.

TheNormanRider 10-11-16 02:22 PM

I got lazy yesterday, and today, and didn't ride. Drove the truck instead to go to work. I am ashamed. :D Tomorrow I'll (try to) be back on it!

It was beautiful riding in this morning! Cool temperatures and the leaves are changing colors. And in Chicago, that means it could snow on the way home.

essiemyra 10-12-16 04:50 AM

The temp was 8 degrees warmer this morning than yesterday. I will take it! Though not the usual uneventful ride. As I was taking a right turn out of our park there was another person heading the same direction as me. I stayed with him till he stopped at the light. I had said hi earlier and I guess he did not hear me as he did not respond. but at the light he said" I wondered who was behind me." That made me think next time maybe I should either come up closer to say hi or say it louder so not to scare someone.

Later in the ride I was on the main road and a car did not stop as he was making a right turn onto the main road right in front of me. So I stopped but, at that point the car stopped and the police officer waved me on from his car. Good going Haverhill police no need for your guys to stop as you enter the main road.

Johnny Mullet 10-12-16 05:37 AM

Not as cold as yesterday, but totally getting darker. Glad I got decent lights.

baron von trail 10-12-16 05:45 AM

Nice ride. 50 degrees, dry no real wind. Can't complain a bit.
