Mechanical...

I had a pretty bad "chain suck" incident descending from my house this morning. It wrapped the slack portion of the chain up and beneath the front derailleur, locking both the rear wheel and the cranks. Fortunately, I grabbed the brakes and stopped quickly. Using the rear wheel for leverage, I broke the mess loose by leaning on the bike and pushing it sharply backward. This probably caused the front derailleur band mount to give way, so the derailleur was cock-eyed. I re-aligned it and everything seemed to be working okay, so continued my ride in.

I'll have to check things on the stand tonight, as I'm not sure if the front derailleur cage is bent.

Thankfully, I had my headlamp in the handlebar bag (didn't need it riding) and was wearing the helmet with the mount already in place. Having hands-free lighting made it easier to fix things.

Otherwise, it was a pleasant and cool ride in. :thumb:

A few degrees warmer than yesterday morning at 47F. We have had very nice afternoons for riding home though.

esmith2039 10-12-16 06:36 AM

Haven't rode for 2 days.. feel like a bum. In my defense have been demoing a bathroom and it rained really hard today. Taking the next 2 days off to hopefully get it all wrapped up!

Tundra_Man 10-12-16 07:15 AM

40 degrees, rain and lots of wind.

At least it's not snowing yet. And I'm not trapped in a car.

jrickards 10-12-16 07:18 AM

Nicer this morning than yesterday, 11C/52F, sunny with little breeze.

Wolfhaven 10-12-16 07:34 AM

Yesterday 60. This morning 43 with a NW wind. Ended up over dressing the upper body a little. Not too bad, I can replace the sweat loss. An uneventful ride in. Tomorrow the temp could yet another ten degrees cooler. Guess I should plan the clothing options tonight and get things laid out. Missing my helmet light. Hope I can find it soon.

30F and sunny, until I got to the fog coming down from the NE. Usually the fog starts on the MUP about a mile west of the 1st picture (I wanted to take the picture so pulled over to the curb so I wasn't blocking a green light taking that).

Pineapple express supposed to come tonight, just the edge so only 4" of rain the next two days. And of course warmer mornings.

Abe_Froman 10-12-16 10:33 AM

Not bad today. I actually almost threw in the towel as there was a steady rain that started right when I went out to my garage to get the bike. Light rain for first mile, heavier rain for about 2 more, then clear, 60ish and breezy with blue sky by the time I got to work 12 miles later.

TheNormanRider 10-12-16 01:03 PM

64F this morning when I fired up the ebike. Very little traffic, and the ride in was uneventful. No other cyclists encountered, but did come across a jogger near my place of work. Cold front moving in at this time, and temp supposed to drop into the 50s. At least I'll have the north wind to my back going home.

Another damn f***. After literally years without a f*** I have had 3 on two different bikes in the last couple of weeks. At least it is nice out and I was close to home or work every time.

essiemyra 10-13-16 04:50 AM

The commute in this am was a nice uneventful ride with the temp at 49f degrees.

I have been enjoying my rides home most recently as they built a new mup in my area. And of yet there are not many people on it when I ride home. I have to go out of my way to get on the mup and ride it 3 miles home. But it makes my ride home about 16 miles and the last part on the mup with no other traffic and newly paved road. I love that!!

They always seem to come in waves for me.

Pea Soup out there this morning, couldn't see across the Potomac.

Phil_gretz 10-13-16 05:21 AM

Yup...Fog

dcb23 saw what I saw, which was nothing but teeny water droplets floating everywhere. Had to take off the glasses, as they were immediately dripping with the mist. It was eerily nice out, though. Sort of peaceful, except on the somewhat blind descents. My local drivers were careful, though.

rhm 10-13-16 06:23 AM

Yup, fog. It was kinda cool, all the familiar street scenes somehow had an unfamiliar look, like in a snowstorm.

mgw4jc 10-13-16 06:43 AM

No fog here. Clear and sunrisey. Below 50 again for the ride in. I left early and stopped at the gym on the way in. I like getting that done in the mornings, but I don't necessarily like the route I have between gym and work. My normal route is much less traffic.

Almost Friday.

Wolfhaven 10-13-16 06:49 AM

A cool 35 this morning. Wore the same as yesterday when it was ten degrees warmer. Added a fleece hot and ankle high hiking boots. Stayed cool. Traffic was very light this morning making for a pleasant ride. Should be 50 for the ride home so it will be long sleeve shirt and shorts.

ptempel 10-13-16 07:05 AM

Was 56F and a little foggy in NJ (Leonia and Ft Lee) this morning. Had to contend with heavy traffic up Ft Lee Road. The GWB traffic was backed up almost to where Rt 80 ends and 95 begins. I ended up parking in the Marriott parking lot on the other side of Rt 95. This was because the off ramp was jammed up going the other direction to Leonia. Not sure what the story was. But a simple accident on Rt 95 or the bridge can jam things up pretty easily. I've only heard about a lane closure going the other direction and bus terminal maintenance:

Port Authority of NY & NJ - Alerts & Advisories - George Washington Bridge

This is another reason to cyclecommute. You get to see cars and trucks taking a half hour to go 1 mile while you cycle past them with a smile on your face. :thumb: Well, maybe not all smiles since I needed to yell at a motorist trying to make two lanes on a single lane road and forcing me on the sidewalk to pass. But you get the idea...

arsprod 10-13-16 07:54 AM

Wicked fun ride in this morning, mostly because 10+mph tailwind. I tried to enjoy it and not think about the ride home

Steely Dan 10-13-16 08:57 AM

it got chilly. it was 39 this morning when i left home, my first sub-40 ride in a LONG time.

it was nice and refreshing, but the 15mph north wind i was riding straight into was less pleasant.

Tundra_Man 10-13-16 09:02 AM

33 degrees this morning. Pretty chilly, but we didn't get the hard freeze as predicted so it could have been worse.

For some reason traffic was really backed up. I passed long lines of cars as I rode by on the MUP next to the road. The drivers looked at me like they were sorry I was out riding on such a cold morning. I looked at them sorry they were sitting motionless in their cars.

At the client's office where I've been working for the past year they handed out updated parking passes for the ramp across the street. As I was turning in my old one I asked if they have to pay to rent spaces for each pass they issue, and was told "yes." I offered to go without one because I never drive and as a result never use the parking ramp. For some reason they were really hesitant to not give me one, and finally insisted I take it, "Just in case."

HardyWeinberg 10-13-16 12:34 PM

Raining, 55F. Supposed to get 4". Power out at work, so hung out a couple hours then turned around and rode home.

SloButWide 10-13-16 12:56 PM

Sucked.

Had to bring a crockpot full of butternut squash casserole to an Office potluck, so my GF drove me. I've felt antsy and keyed up all day.

Darth Lefty 10-13-16 01:03 PM

Two weeks since my little surgery, first day without naproxen, two weeks til commuting again.

They probably lose the space if no one takes it.

People probably figure that SD can have blizzards and temperatures that fall to 20-below. I am sure the average bear cannot imagine anyone riding a bike in that.
