Wind subsided for today.. yesterday was brutal!

Speaking of yesterday. Going through the west bottoms I've seen a lot of photo shoots. Little skimpy dresses and all but that commute was the first topless one! Poor girl needed a hamburger..

Ditto here in Charlotte area. 63F this morning with a high of 84! Yesterday's ride home was nice and warm. Great riding weather.

I had a guy who had the right of way roll down his window and tell me to, "Go ahead, sir!" Normally I don't like doing that, but since he called me sir and all, I said, "Thanks!" and went ahead.

70F this morning and some wind, but nothing compared to yesterday afternoon. Actually passed two cyclists in different parts of town going the opposite direction of me. It always makes me feel good to know I'm not the only rider out there. The ride was uneventful, but I forgot my yogurt and banana at home, so breakfast is on the light side. At least it's taco Tuesday!

Now it's here! Brutal stop-me-in-my-tracks headwind, although pleasantly warm 70F

That sucks. Hope it heals fast and you can get back out riding in a few weeks.

Warmer than expected but it rained overnight and the roads were wet. Sky was mostly clear with plenty of stars and an amazing moon. Grabbed the bike with fenders, transferred lights and headed out. Mostly uneventful. Nice easy ride, didn't push the pace, tried to relax and just enjoy the quiet morning ride.

Record high temps around here for the first part of the week. We've had morning lows in the low 50's just 2-3 weeks ago, but today it was a balmy 71 deg. with 90% humidity. Upper 80's to near 90 in the afternoon. Then after Thursday and Friday we're down into 60's and 70's for highs. Crazy Memphis weather.

Pretty windy this morning. I managed to leave earlier than usual, and arrived at work earlier than usual. But it still took 82 minutes total ride time with a steady headwind.

Tundra_Man 10-18-16 07:34 AM

52 degrees this morning with a light wind. I headed out an hour early and put in 20 extra miles on my way to work. Made sure to head into the wind first so the 2nd half of the ride was a lot easier.

I must not have been the only one with this idea. Saw a lot more commuters than usual this morning. Everyone's probably trying to fit in extra miles before winter hits, which sounds like it could be as early as next week.

Hope the ice and snow hold off for a little while longer. I need to completely refurbish my winter bike as 7 years of salt and chemicals have completely destroyed the drivetrain, crank, brakes and cables. I ordered the parts last week and they should arrive soon, but I'll need to find a slot in my schedule to install everything.

KCBikeCommuter 10-18-16 07:36 AM

Didn't brave the wind yesterday. MUCH lighter winds today, which made for a great commute. Temps should top out in the mid-70's!

Came up on a nice Buck this morning while riding the commuter trail which runs adjacent to a heavily traveled 4-lane. He was probably a 12-pointer from what I could tell in the dusky light. The big deer was staring at traffic, wondering if he should chance a crossing to get after some does in the forest across the road, I suspect.

He spooked as I approached, turned around and hopped over the fence dividing civilian life from a large Air Force base. Watching him not only ponder the traffic but also make an escape was pretty cool. Majestic beast.

kim43235 10-18-16 08:15 AM

Not for today's commute but for yesterday. My third commute and it was kind of hard. I had afternoon off so I left early with short break. 25 miles a day is still a challenge for me. It looks like I always get head wind on my way home. I took my old concord selecta 12 bike this time and actually got better speed in the morning but not in the afternoon. Today is going to be just a light lunch ride about 8-9 miles.

rhm 10-18-16 08:47 AM

Kinda foggy, kinda warm, kinda icky. Strange weather.

Abe_Froman 10-18-16 09:11 AM

Annoying. 30 miles of driving daughter to the grandparents and then in to work. Back on the bike tomorrow though, and it's supposed to be sunny.

Darth Lefty 10-18-16 09:39 AM

Drove kiddo to day care before riding to work. I've determined this wouldn't be an unreasonable bike ride. It adds less than two miles, bike lanes the whole way. Admittedly, it adds uphill with the kid to an otherwise mostly downhill route, and the bike with the kid seat isn't the fast one.

groovestew 10-18-16 09:45 AM

We had another 4 inches of snow last Friday, but most of it is gone already, and the streets and trails are mainly dry. Chilly at -1C/31F, but I'm getting used to it, sort of. Once we get a snow that stays, I'll be done for the year, and given what we've seen already in October, that could be sooner than usual.

Geese are starting to leave, and ravens are starting to arrive. Saw both this morning.

HardyWeinberg 10-18-16 10:41 AM

50F, sunny, clammy

If there were a safe enough route I'd trust to have my 2 yr old on, and it didn't add nearly 20 miles to my commute, I'd do the same thing. Round trip for me is normally 24 miles - I'm happy biking that to work ~3 times a week. Since I have the car on Tuesdays already, I've gone to ironing 3 shirts and bring clothes for the week in.

I don't get to post in this thread as often as I would like these days, but I had a most excellent commute this morning. I don't know why I didn't look sooner, but I found a slight change in route took away 99% of the most dangerous road on my commute, and only adds a mile. I guess bc it is only a half mile on that particular road I never bothered, but it's a horrible road. Now I'm on it for maybe 100 feet, can stay in the suicide lane, or even cut through grass if traffic is too heavy.

I had 2 spots on the ride that I have hated the past 8 months, one of them being this particular road, the other being an area I used to be able to cut through on the way home that was closed off for construction...well, construction done and I have that cut through as well!

Bonus on this new route is it takes me close to Chinese take out, the lame grocery store (but it's the closest if I need to grab one of two things), and in the future, if kids ever happen, the elementary school.

Same here. It's nice to still be in shorts and short sleeves this time of year.

noglider 10-18-16 11:41 AM

It's unusually warm here. It was 67ºF this morning with a predicted high of 81ºF. I commuted wearing shorts and a polo shirt. The wind was unusually calm. There are gusts and currents along the river, so I had some headwinds and some tailwinds, but none lasted for long.

No pain in my feet, so perhaps I have licked this foot pain problem with new shoes and cleats placed farther back.

As of today, I have new tires on my Bianchi, some Clement Strada LGG in 32mm width. I inflated them to 65 psi, which is probably too much. They were unremarkable, so maybe I'll like them when I let some pressure out. They've gotten some excellent reviews.

Darth Lefty Wait I thought Doc said no bike rides for a bit?

Darth Lefty 10-18-16 12:04 PM

Yeah, that's why I drove!

wphamilton 10-18-16 12:30 PM

We are possibly setting a record of warmest temperatures today (mid-80's) for the past 30 years. Tomorrow is supposed to be warmer. Not that I'm complaining - it's nice having shorts and shirt-sleeve weather in the middle of October!

FWIW, I have the Clement Strada LGG in 25s and 28s on two different road bikes. For being as wide a they are, the recommended PSI is still pretty high. On my 28s I inflate the rear to about 100 and the front to 90 (rec between 95-105). They are nice and supple and have so far been an enjoyable ride, mostly over terrible chip seal roads. I did mess up my rear 28 on a rainy century a week ago - I have to take a closer look and find out if that tire is toast or okay to ride. I booted it to finish the ride out as a precaution.

noglider 10-18-16 02:38 PM

bmthom.gis, many people have found that they are overinflating their tires. The sidewall rating is higher than necessary for most people. See this article. Note that the weights in the lookup chart are per wheel, not per bicycle.

That was the weather I had this morning. Though it was my first day this week to commute by bike to work and that was a nice ride.
