Nice ride here in SW Ohio this morning as I approached the limit of what can be done in shorts--38F.

This morning's garb was a light jacket, ear protection, thin full-finger gloves and toe covers. The legs took forever to feel comfy--at least three miles before I felt they were even loose. And, I never felt safe to push them by standing on the pedals or mashing in any way shape or form. Mostly, kept it in spin mode. Even after 20 miles, I was approaching 100RPM to hold my speed.

Another cool morning, 4C/39F, clear and no breeze or rain so a nice 11km ride in to work. Actually, I said that the sky was clear but it was hard to tell at 6:30am, being dark and all.

Part of today's ride was along a 1km, unlit, dirt road that is adjacent to a lake on one side and a large wooded area that essentially connects with forest south of the city. It was still dark at about 7:15 as I was riding along this road when in front of me, about 100m/yd away, I saw 2 or 3 large black objects at the side of the path. I start making noises because they could be bears (there have been a lot of them in the city this year) and they slowly move off the path into the woods and as I pass by where they were, I notice 2 of them on a side trail and one of them called out to me, "Good morning", oh, dog walkers and their dog, never mind.

Had to bring a crockpot full of butternut squash casserole to an Office potluck, so my GF drove me. I've felt antsy and keyed up all day.

Her driving that bad?

Couldn't resist

Another sub 40 ride. Changed jackets and wore one less layer than yesterday. Getting this temp range figured out finally. No wind this morning but it's supposed to pick up to 15 this afternoon.

Overcast skies kept it warmer overnight and I had a nice 57F morning. No jacket or gloves needed for that; just the short sleeve shirt. I left a bit early and added a couple of miles for 16 total. I'll hit 130 miles for the week after the ride home and may yet get a for fun ride in tomorrow or Sunday morning.

I almost hit a runner today. I've seen this guy several times before and we usually say hi or good morning. But it was still pretty dark this morning and a car had just passed me, blocking my view of him. He saw me and hopped off the road as he usually does for cars anyway. I saw him at the last second, swerved away a little, and said, "Sorry!" He waved and replied, "No problem!"

Had a flat on my way to work yesterday. While I can't be completely sure... it may have something to do with this large (almost cartoon-ish) freaking nail!!! :foo:

Saw my breath for the first time this year....not sure I'm ready for this.

That nail looks like it's just a cosmetic issue.

I've really missed my commute for three days attending a convention on fusing Big Data with machine learning. Four days actually but I snuck in a half day at work, mainly to get one last bike ride in before the Summit. It was a really great series of presentations by the way https://www.youtube.com/results?sear...exis+hpcc+2016 on the chance anyone is interested in the session videos.

My road bike's headlight from Amazon was waiting for me at home, now installed just over the fork crown because I suspect I'll be riding in early come Monday.

If I did any kind of consistent traveling for work, I think I would probably get a folding bike to bring with me on planes.

I wonder what TSA would say if you just unfolded it at the gate when you deboarded to ride through the airport on...

birru 10-14-16 03:08 PM

Hit a squirrel today! He decided to dive out of the brush and under my tires with no time to react. All I could do was make sure not to panic stop and maintain control of the bike. I don't think there was anything I could do, but it still sucks.

For sure but it would be extravagant in my case. I don't have a really good excuse for not riding to this one, only about 20 miles from home by bike, mainly I was pretty sure that I couldn't have wheeled my commuter up to my room in that particular hotel. A folder would have been awesome.

Fall weather in KC, and my commute was awsome. Been on Single Speed lately so that I wont relax when I climb hills.

Commuter_42 10-14-16 06:15 PM

I hope the nail was on the way home and not on the way to work. The roads in KC are not great.

I had to put Tuffy liners in both of my bikes.. knock on wood so flats in 3-4 weeks!

Quite a head wind and was already tired. Spent the last four days rebuilding a bathroom. Think I'll only ride M-Tue and Thu-Fri for the rest of the year.

baron von trail 10-17-16 06:20 AM

Weird morning. The partially full moon in a perfectly clear sky threw so much light that it was almost as bright as an overcast day at 6AM, when it's usually pitch black. Warm too. Mid-60's.

mgw4jc 10-17-16 06:44 AM

A nice, comfortable 57F for this morning. Mist hanging over some fields looked cool.

I went for group rec ride on Saturday - first time in a long time. I got a bit over 40 miles in - my longest in a long time.

Tundra_Man 10-17-16 07:39 AM

Forgot to pack my belt in my clothes bag, so today I'm going full-on gansta business casual.

70F this morning, clear sky and a nearly full moon. Perfect weather for riding! I think I was averaging about 16 MPH on the ebike coming in to work. On one of the last descents, however, I was able to hit 30 MPH for just a second or two. Broke 900 miles on the odometer.

kellichou 10-17-16 08:35 AM

Nice ride this morning!

This morning was, like many others have said, weird. It was about 40F, and pretty warm. The moon was really bright, and my usb-charge light lasted the whole time (yay!). I've had problems with the light crapping out on me mid-ride, so I finally bought a tiny battery powered backup, which has already come in handy.

I wore my shorts with chamois, legwarmers, long sleeved wicking shirt, wool neck gaiter, earband, and skullcap under my helmet. And my typical fingerless cycling gloves. I wear wool socks with regular tennis shoes--one day, I vow I will be cool enough for clipless pedals and cleats. Til then, I'm just a pedal stomper.

I really enjoyed the ride. I have a new Brooks saddle (B 17 Imperial S) that I have put about 90 miles on so far. It rides like a dream. I coated the underside with Proofide when I got it, and have kept it dry. Just a little Proofide on the top surface of the leather. The saddle is black, as are my shorts, so I don't have to worry about staining the leather. I upgraded from the comfort gel saddle and terribly short seatpost I've had on my bike for the past 10 years (only about 2 years of active riding in that time, though). Having my tuchis stable really makes a difference with climbing. It's certainly the finest leather my butt has ever perched on.

I get on the trail at 5:45, and get to work about 6:20 (7 miles, all trails. Mostly concrete, the last 2 miles are gravel). I have been doing this since August, and I can't believe I waited almost 10 years since I commuted by bike last. What an amazing way to live.

Allycat24 10-17-16 08:38 AM

Stayed up too late last night, so of course I overslept this morning. Slow start leaving the house, but fast ride in on my road bike! I love that bike - I should ride it more often to work. Commuting bike needs a new chain, among other things. Absolutely great autumn weather today - I will savor the ride home.

HardyWeinberg 10-17-16 09:50 AM

50F and raining. 7" of rain since Thursday. Probably just get an inch or a bit less today.

ps-> fingerless gloves, raincoat, shortsleeve t-shirt, shorts, shoes/socks (was considering sandals for superior drainage but the insulation from the socks is nice). I wonder about the raincoat vs longsleeve smartwool. But it was raining a lot so the shirt would get soaked and heavy pretty quickly vs the raincoat that really didn't bleed through much.

timvan_78 10-17-16 09:55 AM

another drencher this AM and it was wet all weekend. I may have webbed feet soon.

RidingMatthew 10-17-16 10:01 AM

Mid 50's and pretty full moon

I feel like my legs are recovering from my attempt at the mountains to the coast ride of NC. 2 weeks ago 365 miles in 5 days 16529 feet of elevation gain nevermind the 10mph headwinds on the last day from Hurricane Matthew.

Legs felt like lead for last weeks 3 days of riding. (only 87 miles) Started this week and legs feeling better but not 100%

Really dark this morning too.

PatrickGSR94 10-17-16 10:18 AM

Didn't get in my 2nd commute of last week due to carrying around some heavy computer stuff to the office on Thursday, and then pouring rain and storming all day Friday.

Yesterday I rode to the grocery store just before 5 PM, taking a section of road still under construction. When I came back out from the store, rear tire flat. No tube, and no pump. Had to make the call of shame. It was after 6 by the time we all got back home. Fixed the tire later in the evening, and found this tiny shard of glass embedded in the tread. I'm thinking these Bontrager 26x1.5 H2 tires will not be the best option when I convert this utility bike to e-assist.

Had my post-op appointment. Dr says don't go for a bike ride until the surgery incision doesn't hurt any more. A few more weeks or a month...
