Cool ride in this morning. Caught up to a neighbor out for his morning ride so we chatted and cruised along. Nice change of pace. Sunrise is at that point I had to move up my start time to avoid the sun blinding drivers as they ride up behind me.

After June 30, my bike needed a couple of repairs so I took some time off but then one week lead into 2 (plus the purchase of a new car) and then into 3 so after nearly 3.5 weeks, I'm finally back on my bike and feeling out of shape. I have a charity ride in mid-September to train for, 495-575km (depending on whether I take shortcuts or not) over 4 days. It is fully supported and it is not a race but right now, I couldn't do it.

Yesterday and today, it was hot and humid and I was dripping sweat for a long time after arriving at work or home. They were good rides these last two days but only 10km each way. I'll continue for the rest of the week and next week, start increasing and adding more hills and interval training and longer weekend rides.

Have a great day everyone!

Uneventful, muggy ride but have an addition to "odd things I've seen on my commutes." I guy passed me going the opposite direction and he was riding a trike towing a wheelchair with a tow strap. Sometimes I really wish I had a video camera running all the time!

My commute was entirely unusual today. Last night, instead of going home after work, I took the bike I keep in my office and hardly ever ride. I rode to the Metro North commuter train in the Bronx (near where I work) and took the train to White Plains where my mother in law lives. I met her and my wife (who is staying upstate for the week and came down for the day) and went to dinner. I realized getting home would be tricky, so my wife and I spent the night at her mother's place. Taking the bike on the train to work at rush hour might not be possible, so I rode all the way to work, 15 miles. Google took me through very tony suburbs and along trails, all very pretty.

Route and pictures are here.

An egret stood on the rail next to the Bronx River and flew away as I approached. Spectacular.

Rolled out with a storm coming right at me. It was about 60 miles away. The weather ticker said I had about an hour and a half though before it hit. It was right. I only ran into a few sprinkles. Nice ride.

Beautiful ride in. Felt kinda cool. Just looked it up, only 91F.

Last night was a bike - run - bike. I met up with some friends, ran 6 miles with them, then biked the rest of the way home. I was plenty stinky and tired and hungry after that.

Humid ride in this morning.

You're a modern-day celebrity, mgw4jc!

Today was my first and only bike commute of the week, despite the lack of rain. It was also the first day when we haven't had an excessive heat advisory in the past week. It will still be hot, reaching the mid-90s, but the humidity finally backed off a tad. I have been going stir crazy driving to work all week, but did a lot of walking and lifted weights twice. The heat index has hovered between 105-112 all week long here, and I can't remember when we've had such a prolonged bout of high heat combined with extremely high humidity.

I posted this in Advocacy & Safety too, but thought I'd make sure our N.C. commuters - @RidingMatthew & @tarwheel - had seen the new traffic laws regarding cyclists. The one thing that surprised me is that it is not currently legal to pass on double yellow lines. Everybody does anyway, including me when I'm driving and see a cyclist.

thanks mgw4jc great resources about biking. I know that our local advocacy group asked us to email to make sure the bicyclists voice is heard.. another article

that is cool how did you find yourself on street view? you saw the car ride by you?

I did not commute yesterday by bike. :( I apparently passed after eating out with some friends. Scared them, me, and my wife so I figured driving would be a safer move. By Wednesday of this week I had 96 miles in this heat but I think the problem was that I was sitting and when I stood up I felt faint. (healthy heart from biking... resting rate 40's) doesn't like rapid changes like that.

I rode today it was not as humid and actually was a pleasant low 70's ride and it is FRIDAY! :thumb:

baron von trail 07-29-16 06:42 AM

Fifth straight commute--sixth going back to last Friday. First time this year I rode in all week. I felt good too. My worst day was Wednesday. I was dragging a bit then, but today I felt good. At least I did until I tweaked my knee.

On the knee: I was rounding a corner with a slight incline as I tried taking off at an intersection. Found myself in too high of a gear. Immediate pain in the left knee. It didn't persist, but I could feel it when I tried standing on the pedals a few minutes later. So, I just babied it the rest of the way, spinning high RPM's and avoiding any attempt at intervals.

It'll be fine by the time i ride home.

jrickards 07-29-16 06:46 AM

Beautiful morning, 2nd day in a row with a breeze from the north, weird for us here although I suppose it's got to come from somewhere, ! Beautiful sunny morning ride, cooler than expected, 13C/55F, which I supposed is to be expected with the breeze from the north.

Today Fri-nally here! Have a great one everyone and, especially the fellow Canadians who get Monday off for the Civic Holiday.

Well... my old Cannondale Black Lightning (my primary commuter bike) is no more. It was on the bike rack as we traveled to Florida last month, and we were rear-ended. No one was hurt in either vehicle, which is ultimately what we can be the most thankful for. The lady that hit us was cited, but I wanted to wait to post anything until the insurance was sorted out... and her insurance company settled with us last week. Both my wife's bike, my bike and the bike rack were destroyed. There was quite a dent in the back of the minivan too, but since it was a Hertz rental, her insurance is dealing directly with Hertz for the van.

My Trek Crossrip will become my primary commuter bike now and I'll probably buy a new 'gravel' bike as a replacement.

It has been crazy hot. I only had one heat advisory this week. Tuesday I think but it was super hot everyday! people at work keep asking me if I rode and how do I do it. :)

KCBikeCommuter I am glad you are okay and it turned out all right.

KC, looks like a mere flesh wound...

Cold ride this morning. 50*F with a little fog. Feet were freezing in sandals. Sunrise was getting in the eyes making it a little more dangerous with cars coming up from behind. Next week I'll start earlier to avoid it on clear days. May take a side loop to add a mile tonight so I can hit an even 100 miles for the week. This weekend I'll add about 100 more along the Mississippi River Trail in southern MN.

SteffyMacD 07-29-16 09:23 AM

Slightly cooler commute this morning, temps were in the low 70's and it was sprinkling. High today is supposed to be around 80 degrees, which should feel great after the 90-95 weather we've been getting.

Construction still happening in the middle of my route, but this morning there was actually a police officer who was controlling the traffic. I came up to stop where he had stopped a line of cars, but instead of making me wait he waved me through! Very much appreciated that small act of kindness, it allowed me to quickly and safely put some distance between myself and a very large truck.

Unfortunately as good as the rain feels, it's made me realize I need to get fenders ASAP. When I got to the train station I realized I had water and dirt sprayed all over my butt from my back wheel, doh.

Today was nice. 91F per my thermometer on my handlebars. Got to work and as I was walking my bike through the sliding doors to the basement I looked down at my TomTom to check my time, as always. It took several minutes longer than usual. My first thought was what is wrong with me? but I got to thinking about it, I added a mile today, it was a little windy, and I had to stop for traffic several times, which I rarely do. So great ride.

Great 30mi (Wednesday)! Here is a pic from cruising around at my work site in the evening:

Only one commute last week, and again only one commute this week (Tuesday). While at work Tuesday my wife informed me of her car billowing smoke out the back. When I got home Tuesday evening I checked it out, sure enough: blown head gasket. So I had to order parts, tear it all apart Wednesday evening, and carry the cylinder head up to my trusted machine shop in Memphis on Thursday morning (40 miles round trip, driving of course!), then go from the office up there today to pick up the cylinder head (50 miles round trip), and also pick up my parts this afternoon.

So yeah, really no time to ride to work this week after Tuesday. Sure hope I can get the wife's car back together and running this weekend.

HardyWeinberg 07-29-16 01:49 PM

Nice ride in today. Summer is definitely here. Hit 90 yesterday evening, probably not past 85 today. Next week will start some detours extending my commute.

rumrunn6 07-31-16 06:53 PM

new personal record and I think the new tires had something to do with it
