Storm blew in this afternoon. First couple of miles had a light tailwind. Then it turned against me. When I swung back to the south from north the wind swung with me. So yeah, headwinds both ways.

It also started raining hard when I turned back to the south. So hard I stopped at a local store. Got a chocolate milk and stood on their porch for about 20 min. There were another half dozen people waiting with me. It was still coming down but the wind eased off. So like an impatient fool off I went. Parts of the streets were so flooded I couldn't see the sidewalks. Why is it when it rains traffic gets heavier?

Oh well. As a once in a while event it was fun.

I finished building my Huffy Deore XT build over the weekend and really only had time to adjust the gears. I decided to commute with it again today and I am very pleased..............

In a word...laziness :-)
I kinda burned myself out over the winter and let my fitness slip. Then started commuting to a new job a few months ago and have been getting progressively faster.

essiemyra 08-03-16 05:05 AM

This morning there was no humidity. That made the ride even better. It was a very nice uneventful commute.

Johnny Mullet 08-03-16 05:38 AM

Today's commute was great. The temps were good and a slight tail wind on the way in. Sadly I will be on vacation until next Tuesday so no commutes for almost a week. I will still do some recreation riding though.

KStier 08-03-16 06:08 AM

Weather was gorgeous...only my third week riding in but it was an easier ride today with a little cooler temps and I'm getting the logistitcs and the backpack packing down.

Said no one ever. Or something.

Threatening thunderstorms and rain clouds yesterday afternoon dissipated and went south of me just before I headed home. There's a chance for more today, but I rode anyway.

tarwheel 08-03-16 07:17 AM

Took a chance and rode today despite our continuing weather pattern of daily thunderstorms. After watching the weather forecast on TV this morning, it was looking like the storms would set up south and west of our area, if they are right. That's a pretty big IF because our local forecasters are notoriously bad at predicting rain.

Our weather here this summer has been the worst that I can remember. We've had hotter summers and wetter summers, but we've never had such a combination of heat and humidity. Every day the air feels like a wet blanket, and the high humidity means that the threat of thunderstorms never really goes away. Last week was about the only week all summer when it didn't rain nearly every day, but the heat and humidity were so intense that the heat index was reaching 110 or higher every afternoon. I can't wait for fall.

locolobo13 08-03-16 07:19 AM

79F 87% this morning. Whew! Where's my dry heat?! lol

Wolfhaven 08-03-16 07:29 AM

A nice 59*F this morning. Humid but not bad. Left before the sunrise to avoid the sun in the eyes of the cars coming up behind on the 4 miles of highway I start out on. After that I turned and got to enjoy the sunrise off to the side. Very uneventful ride. Near 90 with high humidity for the ride home.

esmith2039 08-03-16 09:14 AM

Tired.. worked late and only 4 hours of sleep. Did a bit extra last night too. Might have to drive Friday but nearing 1k miles for the year and I'm behind.

making 08-03-16 09:20 AM

Nice ride. Cooler, looked so much like rain I might not have rode if I had looked out the window before getting my bike out. My rule is if it isn't actually raining when it is time to leave, I ride. But sometimes I break that rule. glad I rode though.

groovestew 08-03-16 01:42 PM

Pretty nice for the ride in...not too hot, and though the clouds were heavy, no rain while I was riding. Put a new rear tire on since the last commute, but can't really tell the difference.

wphamilton 08-03-16 04:37 PM

Great ride home! It is mid-90°'s and humid, but weirdly that's what I like best. I got a 2nd personal fastest on one 5.4 mile segment, which would be 4th on the all time list, and a 4th personal on the overall commute segment, at 19.4 mph my fastest in 2 years. I was getting a little bummed not seeing any achievements this year whenever I turned Strava on, but it restores my confidence just a little.

essiemyra 08-04-16 05:01 AM

A very nice commute in again today. No humidity and cool at 58f degrees makes pleasant riding conditions for me.

rhm 08-04-16 05:42 AM

It was so cool this morning, I was actually cold for a little while! Very nice.

RidingMatthew 08-04-16 06:08 AM

well I took my O2 rain coat out of my pannier Monday morning and I think it has rained every day since. Tuesday a massive thunderstorm moved through weather alerts said 2" of rain coming down flash flooding etc. By the time I was ready to go it had moved on. :) (thankful for the fenders) Coming in yesterday I shortened my ride because I was afraid it would rain on me. Riding home I rode home yesterday in a steady rain only two times was it really hard though(difficult to see) People at work were asking me if I had to ride home in it. I said I rode here. 11-12 miles in the on a summer day is nothing compared to a metric century in the rain & 42F earlier this year.

I put the rain coat back in the pannier. Maybe the rain will stop. Today is my Friday. heading to the beach with the family this weekend. (hoping it does not rain the whole time)

rhm what temps did you see this morning? I saw 66F and it was cooler than usual especially with the moisture still in the air.

mgw4jc 08-04-16 06:24 AM

Wow RidingMatthew! Quite the week. And 66? It was still 72 or so here this morning. High dew point and high humidity, so no different. So far all the rain threats have turned to nothing or just wet roads for me so far.

It's Friday for me too as my youngest turns 11yo tomorrow. She has a lunch time horse show to wrap up a summer camp and we'll be eating cake and such after that.

tarwheel 08-04-16 06:49 AM

Nicest commute this morning that I've had in quite a while, with cooler temperatures and lower humidity. Nothing extreme, just more like "normal" for summer around here rather than the extreme heat and humidity we've had most of the summer. A cold front moved through here yesterday, so I actually benefited on my ride home as well yesterday in terms of temperatures and humidity even though I had a headwind. The wind was at my back most of the commute this morning.

jrickards 08-04-16 07:24 AM

Warm and humid this morning, 19C/66F, 85% humidity, so I was dripping like a pig when I arrived after 23 minutes on the bike. This afternoon is going to be worse with a forecasted air temp of 33C/91F and a humidex of 39C/102F: Environment Canada has a heat warning in effect for today.

I'm really liking my new helmet-liner style of Buff which has a bit of a band around the openings that is keeping the sweat from my head from running down into my eyes or across my glasses.

Have a great day!

KCBikeCommuter 08-04-16 07:26 AM

Not too hot this morning, but very humid. Should have a heat-index around 107F for the ride home tonight. :-(

I feel you... literally same here. Work travel has interrupted bicycle commuting, I hate when that happens. Glad to be back at it if for only 2 more days this week

noglider 08-04-16 10:23 AM

My commute was insanely fantastic. It's warm but there are cool breezes. The views of the river and of the hundreds of athletic people I passed were spectacular. I rode my road racing bike which I don't ride often. I didn't carry any luggage, and I rode like a bat out of hell, averaging a screaming (for me) 15.7 mph, well above my typical 13 mph average.

"insanely fantastic" Those are excellent adjectives which make me smile. I wish more things could be described in that fashion.

I loved those days when I could ride the racing bike.

FalconRider54 08-04-16 02:16 PM

Rode my folder today, a Tern Node D8. Me and a coworker are stopping for a beer or two after work. Much easier to put this in his truck than my long wheel base recumbent. The last couple of days the temperature has been in the upper 60's for the ride in, upper 70's for the ride home.
