Very cool morning, especially wearing cycling shorts but I survived it. 4C/39F, but clear and sunny as I ended up leaving a bit later than normal. It was especially cool on the last stretch as I headed down the hill to the level of the lake, there must have been dampness in the air that was making it feel cooler. I wore cycling shorts and short wool socks but my tops were: thin merino baselayer, long-sleeved jersey, wind-proof gillet/vest and long fingered gloves on my hands and a Buff under my helmet.

After last week's commutes in the 30s and 40s, so far this week has been quite pleasant in the low 50s. Sounds like that will change tomorrow as we're supposed to dip below freezing. They're talking snow for portions of the state by the end of the week.

Looks like this will be the last warm-ish morning for a while. 57F when I left this morning, and a pleasant commute to work.
I passed 3 folks as I crossed over the Missouri River today. I normally I have the Heart of America Bridge MUP all to myself, so it was nice to see others using the bridge. However, it was very dark this morning and none of them (a walker, a jogger and a biker) had any lights or reflective gear on at all. My headlight is quite bright, but I almost didn't see the walker at all... dressed in dark clothes from head to toe! |
Very cold. Probably sweat on the ride home.
|
My first ride to work today. Took 50 mins for a 12-mile ride. Bit cold but wan't too bad. Feel little lightheaded though. Another 12 to go after work!

We had 3 inches of snow this past weekend, but most of what fell on pavement melted on contact, and by this morning, all paved surfaces were clear and dry. First sub-freezing commute this fall. I rode a multi-geared bike for the first time in two months this morning.

I've been bike commuting for years, and you're already faster than I am. I hope you don't think 50 minutes is a bad time. I hope, instead, it's 50 minutes of pure enjoyment. Or at least a lot of it.
Was 48F and a good park and ride in for me today. Did a half loop around Central Park this morning. Kept the gear low and spun the cranks like Chris Froome. :) |

In fact my route is a very straight road with only 4 traffic lights and 3 stop signs in a 12-mile ride. I am sure I would enjoy the ride more next time but today I was in a survival mode. Thanks for a kind word! |

I got lazy yesterday, and today, and didn't ride. Drove the truck instead to go to work. I am ashamed. :D Tomorrow I'll (try to) be back on it!

It was beautiful riding in this morning! Cool temperatures and the leaves are changing colors. And in Chicago, that means it could snow on the way home.
|
The temp was 8 degrees warmer this morning than yesterday. I will take it! Though not the usual uneventful ride. As I was taking a right turn out of our park there was another person heading the same direction as me. I stayed with him till he stopped at the light. I had said hi earlier and I guess he did not hear me as he did not respond. but at the light he said" I wondered who was behind me." That made me think next time maybe I should either come up closer to say hi or say it louder so not to scare someone.
Later in the ride I was on the main road and a car did not stop as he was making a right turn onto the main road right in front of me. So I stopped but, at that point the car stopped and the police officer waved me on from his car. Good going Haverhill police no need for your guys to stop as you enter the main road. |
Not as cold as yesterday, but totally getting darker. Glad I got decent lights.

Nice ride. 50 degrees, dry no real wind. Can't complain a bit.

Mechanical...
I had a pretty bad "chain suck" incident descending from my house this morning. It wrapped the slack portion of the chain up and beneath the front derailleur, locking both the rear wheel and the cranks. Fortunately, I grabbed the brakes and stopped quickly. Using the rear wheel for leverage, I broke the mess loose by leaning on the bike and pushing it sharply backward. This probably caused the front derailleur band mount to give way, so the derailleur was cock-eyed. I re-aligned it and everything seemed to be working okay, so continued my ride in.
I'll have to check things on the stand tonight, as I'm not sure if the front derailleur cage is bent. Thankfully, I had my headlamp in the handlebar bag (didn't need it riding) and was wearing the helmet with the mount already in place. Having hands-free lighting made it easier to fix things. Otherwise, it was a pleasant and cool ride in. :thumb: |
A few degrees warmer than yesterday morning at 47F. We have had very nice afternoons for riding home though.
|
Haven't rode for 2 days.. feel like a bum. In my defense have been demoing a bathroom and it rained really hard today. Taking the next 2 days off to hopefully get it all wrapped up!
|
40 degrees, rain and lots of wind.
At least it's not snowing yet. And I'm not trapped in a car. |
Nicer this morning than yesterday, 11C/52F, sunny with little breeze.
|
Yesterday 60. This morning 43 with a NW wind. Ended up over dressing the upper body a little. Not too bad, I can replace the sweat loss. An uneventful ride in. Tomorrow the temp could yet another ten degrees cooler. Guess I should plan the clothing options tonight and get things laid out. Missing my helmet light. Hope I can find it soon.

30F and sunny, until I got to the fog coming down from the NE. Usually the fog starts on the MUP about a mile west of the 1st picture (I wanted to take the picture so pulled over to the curb so I wasn't blocking a green light taking that).
Pineapple express supposed to come tonight, just the edge so only 4" of rain the next two days. And of course warmer mornings. |
Not bad today. I actually almost threw in the towel as there was a steady rain that started right when I went out to my garage to get the bike. Light rain for first mile, heavier rain for about 2 more, then clear, 60ish and breezy with blue sky by the time I got to work 12 miles later.
|
64F this morning when I fired up the ebike. Very little traffic, and the ride in was uneventful. No other cyclists encountered, but did come across a jogger near my place of work. Cold front moving in at this time, and temp supposed to drop into the 50s. At least I'll have the north wind to my back going home.
|
Another damn f***. After literally years without a f*** I have had 3 on two different bikes in the last couple of weeks. At least it is nice out and I was close to home or work every time.
|
The commute in this am was a nice uneventful ride with the temp at 49f degrees.
I have been enjoying my rides home most recently as they built a new mup in my area. And of yet there are not many people on it when I ride home. I have to go out of my way to get on the mup and ride it 3 miles home. But it makes my ride home about 16 miles and the last part on the mup with no other traffic and newly paved road. I love that!! |

Pea Soup out there this morning, couldn't see across the Potomac. |
Yup...Fog
dcb23 saw what I saw, which was nothing but teeny water droplets floating everywhere. Had to take off the glasses, as they were immediately dripping with the mist. It was eerily nice out, though. Sort of peaceful, except on the somewhat blind descents. My local drivers were careful, though.
|
Yup, fog. It was kinda cool, all the familiar street scenes somehow had an unfamiliar look, like in a snowstorm.
|
No fog here. Clear and sunrisey. Below 50 again for the ride in. I left early and stopped at the gym on the way in. I like getting that done in the mornings, but I don't necessarily like the route I have between gym and work. My normal route is much less traffic.
Almost Friday. |
