Woke up to check the weather on my phone app - WooHoo!! 2km tail wind. Set off and realized my app wasn't current. 40Km/hr + headwind :notamused:
However, the wind didn't change so it was a tailwind coming home. For my 1st commute of the year, I'll take it though! |
noglider. I'm sorry about your mom. My grandma passed on Easter and it's been tough for my dad and aunt.
I'm thinking of you, try to remember the good times. And it's okay to cry. |
Tough wind conditions on the ride home last night, but otherwise a really beautiful afternoon. Sunny and warm, but pedaling into a 20 mph headwind felt like trying to move a wall. Surprisingly though, I made the same time (1:45 to knock off 30 miles) that I always do. I wonder what I could have done on a windless day...
Discouraging though was being passed by a cycling club about an hour into my ride. These guys were flying. I estimate 27 mph. I cold not even speed fast enough up to attempt to hang with them for a minute. They came, and then they were gone. Whoosh! |
I often carry a wireless door opener in the front pocket of a pannier so it's easily accessible when I need it. Yesterday, when I reached for it, it wasn't there. It must've fallen out somewhere along my ride. So I back-tracked the entire route looking for it. Nothing. After returning from my long, round-trip search, I unpacked my pannier, and lo and behold, there was the door opener sitting in the bottom of the pannier. I must have mindlessly placed it in the bag rather than in the outer pouch like I always do.
Anyway, long story short, my commute was longer than usual yesterday. |

I have a small keychain type G-Door opener in my triangle frame bag. For easy access, I attach the little clip on the opener to the tassel on the bag's zipper and then stuff it inside for safe keeping.

My new-to-me house didn't include garage door clickers, so needing three of them I went with an app based option rather than installed keypads or buying clickers. EG: http://www.amazon.com/Chamberlain-MY...ilpage_o01_s00
One advantage is you can open and close it remotely, or check its status. One disadvantage is it takes a few more seconds by the time you unlock your phone, open the app and hit the button. |

Weather for the upcoming week looks ugly. Rain is forecast every day. I'm not sure what that means in reality though. Often it means scattered showers and isolated T-Storms more than heavy rains. I'll have to keep an eye on the hourly ticker all week.
|
Oy. Woke up with my cell phone clutched in my hands. A sure sign I'd turned off the alarm, as it turned out, 40 minutes earlier. I dressed and left asap, figuring I'll catch the next train at a loss of 25 minutes or so. Rode fast.
But my rear tire went flat. At this point I realized I has removed my frame pump and not put it back. Fortunately I was near enough to a gas station, so I walked there, changed my tube, pulled a 3/4" finishing nail from my tire, and used the compressor. Of course I didn't have a presta adapter either. I cut the tip off a presta valve cap and installed it backwards, which served well enough once I figured out how to work the compressor (which had instructions on the side... incomplete instructions). I'm on my train, about an hour late. Could be worse! And it's not raining. |
It was a nice commute ride wise, though the temp was a little cool at 37f degrees. It is light enough not to have to use the head light, but I think I will continue to use the rear light on blink mode.

I visited my mother last night, and she is in the final stages of dying with dementia. I got pretty upset and cried on the subway ride this morning. Maybe riding would have held that off. Then again, maybe not. I've been crying at the office today, too.

Last night, I was ready to put my tights and some other cool weather gear away for next fall when I checked today's forecast and discovered that the first couple of days this week start with cool temperatures, like today's commute in to work at -2C/28F. However, the afternoons will be warm so I can ride home in shorts and a short-sleeved jersey. I'll have to wait until next weekend for packing away cool weather gear.

I'm on my train, about an hour late. Could be worse! And it's not raining. Nice enough ride in this morning. A comfortable 59F when I left, getting up to 84 this afternoon. Strava is telling me this: "Ride with us on May 10th for the first-ever Global Bike to Work Day." Is this a thing or just a Strava thing? |
Rain has returned as the weatherman predicted. Wasn't a bad ride though.
Got to work and realized I'd put my bike lock in another bag that I didn't bring this morning. Oops. Found an alcove at the bottom of a stairway inside the building to stash it. I usually don't like bringing my bike inside uninvited, but seeing as I wanted it to still be there for the ride home I decided to make an exception. More angry geese on the way to work this morning. Thankfully I didn't get attacked again, but there was a lot of hissing and spitting. I wonder why geese are so uptight? They should hang out more often with the ducks. All the ducks I rode by just looked at me as if to say, "Sup?" |
The damned rains came at 5AM and continued through the 8 AM hour. I hate that ****! No biking today.
|
Decided last night I was biking in this morning. If I had waited to make the decision until this morning I might have rolled over and slept for another hour. Cool 37f start into a steady headwind. Legs weren't feeling it combined with the wind I decided to forget the speed and just focus on enjoying the ride. Made for a pleasant ride in. Winds should make for a nice ride home this afternoon.
Signed on to the strava international bike to work day before checking the forecast. Bad move. Guess I'll get to check out my rain gear and fenders. |
Send some of that rain up here! It's been an unusually hot and dry and windy spring and firefighters are being kept busy dealing with grass fires and worse. More seasonal temperatures this morning, but still windy. Rode a geared bike instead of a fixed gear so that I have the option of gearing down in the winds.

Finally a work day without rain in the forecast in NC. We actually had beautiful weather over the weekend, after raining nearly every day for the previous week. We also had a big thunderstorm during the middle of the night but it had quit raining by the time I got up. The streets were still a little wet in spots this morning but nothing my fenders couldn't handle. It's supposed to be dry here again on Tuesday, but it looks like the rainy weather will return on Weds-Friday.
|
We had about seven days of rain off and on and overcast skies the whole time. Now it is bright and sunny and promises to be this way for another week. I really didn't mind last week's weather until Saturday. Maybe the air pressure dropped, which has a bad effect on mood.
I had a tail wind coming to work today! Woohoo! |
A very nice commute in this morning the temp was at 43f degrees. I was able to add a couple of extra miles in and see how the house with the gardens is doing. The phlox is in bloom, and it smells delightful. I thought it should just be a riding day not a work day.
On my way home last night I almost got hit by a bird. I have never had a bird come so close in front of my face. Maybe the gusty winds were blowing him around. Very weird. |
It's been nice despite the periodic rains lately. Today's ride was gloriously warm with light breezes. The sun is nearly up for my entire ride in now, so my lights are about to be put away for a few months. Yay.
|
Fine ride in this morning! Perfect temp and a light wind to stay cool.

Wimped out this morning by going back to sleep since it was raining when I was supposed to wake up. An hour later, it was clear. And now it's actually pretty nice. Not riding was a major mistake!!
Lesson learned. |
AM commute was my first solo ride in months, because SO had a flat we didn't notice until we were ready to get out (he's been unemployed so he likes to ride to work with me). Ride was kinda hard as it was very windy, passed a car/truck crash on the last third (SO GLAD I didn't drive today). A ninja cyclist blowed me a kiss (being a girl in a bicycle sucks sometimes). And a bus decided to pass me very closely. Both things that wouldn't have happened if my SO had been riding with me.
|
When is this cool morning weather ever going to give up? Today, although sunny and beautiful, was 0C/32F and I continue to need to wear my tights. It appears that the rest of the week will be mild enough to ditch them for the morning rides it but the weekend will have subfreezing overnight temps and Monday morning's commute will do as well.
Fort McMurray needs this cool weather, not us, but they also need rain and we don't have any for them. |
Very cool pic esmith2039.
It stayed mostly cloudy yesterday and was still quite humid for the ride home. Not too hot though. Pleasant here this morning. Left a little early and added a couple of miles for 15 total. |
Got up early and went for a run. Then I hopped on the bike and rode 8 miles to work.
Then saw the doughnuts in the break room and promptly un-did all the benefit I'd gained earlier. :( |

Or possibly, "Long story short; short commute long."
Way to go MacGyver! And if it did start raining I'm sure you'd figure out how to convert the old tube and nail into an umbrella of sorts. |
