Extreme Cold

Parts of the upper Mid West and the East are undergoing a deep freeze this weekend. How cold has and will it get this weekend (where you are at) and is anyone riding with temps this low?

It was 6f/-13c this morning. The Aftn was 23f/-5c. We're having a mild winter and these are the coldest temperatures we've had so far this season. My area has only had nine inches of snow so far. And that is unusual.

Where I'm at they're calling for highs in mid teens and lows in the single digits for the weekend. With a slight warm up for next week.

-21C expected up here on Saturday with winds 30 to 50 km/h. Light snow, perhaps 5 to 10 cm. May go out tomorrow.

I think it was a Real Feel of -9 today most of the day. The headwind was annoying

It will be in the teens over the weekend in Des Moines; I'm not sure what the temp will be in once you factor in the wind chill. I'll be out riding both days.

I have been out commuting as low as 6.5F so far, because that's the coldest it's been here. Knock on wood, hasn't happened this winter yet.

Props to y'all going out there in negative temperatures.

It's calling for -1F tomorrow morning for the coffee ride with a nw wind around 11mph. Tailwind for the away trip, headwind for the return. My plans thus far include:

Shorts, tights, craft storm pants
light long sleeve shirt, thermal long sleeve jersey, Funkier jacket
Wigwam socks, touring shoes, plastic bags, shoe covers
balaclava, helmet with cover, goggles.

If I make it two miles, I'll make the whole trip.

Might be the only one to do it.

High of 10-15°F tomorrow with wind chills as low as -10°F during the day. I plan on riding 7.5 miles to work.
Low of -5°F for the night commute back home.

My coldest actual temp to date is 0F. Hoping to break that tomorrow.

We've had a very mild winter season so far this year. It's only the last few days that real cold has come. This morning I rode my bike to do grocery shopping,
the temperature was -26C ( minus 14 F ) plus windchill on top of that. I had a choice and could of driven my vehicle but I chose to ride instead.

Bah. I'm getting old and don't find anything that remarkable about cold snaps in the winter. I was just having an email conversation with my cousin and brother about a ski trip we took to Northern MN when we were kids. It's was -35 °F. A little chilly on the slops.

It's been a mild winter overall. So was last year. Only two years ago we were talking about the "Polar Vortex". That year we had over 50 days with below 0 °F temps. But as cold as that year was, I think my coldest rides came more than 5 years ago.

Forecasts show 30's and possibly 40 by the end of next week. If I leave work on time I can get home while there's still some light in the sky. Winter is on its way out already after getting a late start. We can see below zero weather well into March but that seems unlikely the year.

Weather Underground is claiming an actual temperature of -3F right now. I'm leaving for a get-together in 20-30 minutes and traveling via electric fat bike.

It's been a mild winter but it was a cold morning to commute to work. My usual gloves and shoes didn't quite do their job today, . But the weather will be warmer by early next week.

Rode my cf bike on slick 23s yesterday in 0f wind chill. Finger tips got cold like usual, but otherwise it was a nice ride. This am there it was 20f with 10-15mph winds and 2-3 inches of fresh powder so I took the cross bike with 44c Conti Top Contact Winters...worked like a charm although the riding is slow and laborious. Still warmer than last year's regular dips down to -15f.

Commute home last night was 2°F and the wind was at my back. Sun is out currently and it is supposed to be in the 20's by the time I leave for work. CX bike with 38's and fenders just like yesterday. Enough tire to handle the leftover snow on the MUP and whatever else may be out there. Snow showers a possibility tonight.

I'm in Minneapolis, Mn and the temps predicted are light rain on Fri, then a high of 48f on Sat and 40f on Sun, so I'm not to worried.

One certainly can ride below 10F, but I pretty much don't. I did it one time. The problem at a certain point is that any exposed skin can get (edit: frostbite, not frostbike lol) (remember you always have a 10-20mph wind on the bike). It definitely can be solved, but it's often just to much hassle for me to ensure that every bit of exposed skin is covered. The lower body is easy, but the face is the most difficult one to keep 100% covered.

Frostbike needs to be a thing.

I've got 'pogies' (handle bar covers) so with gloves i'm good to -10C at least. I won't commute below -5C and/or snow & ice. I find it's just not fun. Short 20 min trips, yea no problem. I swap between my ped electric bike and 8spd IGH depending on the distances.

I get frostbike on my hand every time I grab the stem to walk my bike to my office after coming inside from another 20-degree (or less, but not this year so far) ride to work. :brr:

My personal record low is 9 F / -13 C, set last year. That is a record that I am not at all eager to beat.

I began riding through the winter in 2011-12, commuting to work and taking the weekends off from riding; as opposed to summer, during which I ride seven days a week, for commuting and also for pleasure. I had no idea how good I had it that winter. Indeed, that winter and the next one were mild, as compared to the two subsequent winters.

A glance at the weather data for February in New York during the past several years shows that February 2012 was relatively luxurious, having only one day during which the low was far below freezing, and 20 days during which there was no freezing at all. In the following year, February had only 7 days in which the low was below the high 20s F / -3 C (the threshold beyond which things get very uncomfortable), and featured 11 non-freezing days.

By contrast, February 2014 had 14 days with lows below the high 20s F / -3 C; and there were only 7 non-freezing days.

Then came last year. Egad! February of 2015 had no non-freezing days at all, 26 days in which the low was below the high 20s F / -3 C, and 16 days (or more than half the month) during which the low was below 15 F / -9 C. It was during that month that I rode in cold of 9 F / -13 C.

February of this year has not been nearly as bad. This past Saturday saw the temperature in New York get to 7 F / -14 C, which was the coldest day in New York in several decades; but it was only that one day. I find that sort of cold hellish, even though I know that the people in Minnesota and Buffalo are laughing at me. I cannot conceive how they deal with that sort of thing on a regular basis.

I live for the summer. I have averaged 1000 miles per month in July and August of the past two years, and I made it to 1100 miles last July. By contrast, I am lucky if I approach 300 miles in February. So this month is always the most frustrating for me.
