After getting honked at, I was just thinking...

I live out in the country, own a little bit of land and own a truck for my DD. I truck is a necessity for me, I haul stuff regularly (not just my bike). Around here it's most often the compact station wagon type vehicles that are most often crowding me (Kia Soul, Nissan Cube, Honda Fit, Subaru's and VW's) but almost always stickers on the back.

There's something to it, actually.

Just last night, I was pulled over at the side of the road, around midnight. I was checking my phone when I felt something hit the back of my calf as a car drove by. I looked down and saw peanuts at my feet. Someone in the passing car threw peanuts at me! They didn't say a word; just threw peanuts. Weirdo. :-)

I agree with the two basic, friendly and unfriendly honks, and the others are probably heard and recognized in context. When responding to a honk, as a commuter, I keep this advice in mind; the closer to the workplace, the more likely the honker may be a coworker, a client, or even the Boss.
There are friendly honks and rude honks. Friendly honks are when drivers tap their horns to make you aware that they are passing or to just acknowledge you. Unfriendly honks are when drivers lay on their horns and pass real closely or accelerate real fast around you. I would estimate that about half of the honks I get while commuting are friendly ones, but perhaps I'm just optimistic.
There actually are other types of honks. One I would call the "safety" honk… Another is the "wake up and drive" honk… Another is the "you're an idiot…
Although some might consider such honking unfriendly, I consider it useful in reminding certain drivers that they are driving recklessly and endangering others.

In 12 years of riding I think I've been honked at maybe 3 times in what I think was anger, 1 of those was deserved. Maybe 10 times with "safety" honks (misguided people who think that somehow an adult riding a bicycle in the road is not already aware of all the cars around him).

It's not that people don't honk....
1: Was that a thumbs up honk or thumbs down honk?
2: Are you honking at me?
3: Why are you honking?
4: Which car is doing the honking?
5: Is the person honking the same one that is yelling?
6: People that throw crap at me,is their horn broken?
7: How come big cars don't have big horns and little cars have little horns?
So they're honking but since I never do anything wrong,it must be at somebody else.....

If I'm not too busy, I turn to the honker and wave and smile. Let them think I'm too dumb to understand why they're angry.

Actually, I am too dumb to understand why they are angry. It never has made any sense to me.
