Stop staring at a small screen and look around. I know it's hard to imagine, but that's how it was done in the olden days.

I like Strava; however, when I started riding there were no computers for bikes. How in the world did I survive? ROFL!

Not in real time with the free version, I think. I'm not sure if that was what the OP was asking, though.

If you don't need real time display of local riders, though, you could just check out the regional forums on this very site.

I'n not aware that any version of Strava does real-time. I only use it to collect other data for my rides to keep track, sort of my personal motivator if you will. Once the data is uploaded, you can use what Strava calls "flyby" to see other Strava members who may have been near, or intersected with your ride. Only looked at it once and did see a couple of cyclists one day when I rode.

I love flyby, and check it everyday. It's great for checking out that Lance Armstrong that blew by you. I have this one guy who passes me periodically and he often rides a 30 mile commute with an average speed of 18mph or so. Always pushes me to work harder...

I use the free version of Strava and have never noticed the flyby feature. Is it only available to subscribers? I'll have to look for it.

It's in the free version. Just open up a ride and look for "STRAVA LABS View Flybys" and click on it.

Found it! I haven't found any flybys by other Strava users yet, though.

Have you seen any other cyclists while riding?

I would guess most regular commuters don't bother with Strava, but if you see athletes/racers they use Strava a lot to track their rides.

I'm in the SF Bay Area, and there are a *lot* of commuters and competitive cyclists. If I ride my commutes over rush hour sometimes I'll see 7 or 8 in my flybys. Some of these will do 20 or 30 mile rides regularly. Even off hours I'll get at least 1 or 2.

I don't see it on my phone, but it's there on the web page.

Strava is used on the computer or mobile device after you've finished a ride. Review your stats, route, elevation, etc. See who has ridden past you or crossed your path during your ride.

I start Strava, immediately put the phone in my pocket, do my ride and check out all the data when I'm home. You don't use it while riding.

Yes, I forgot to mention that - it doesn't seem to be accessible from the mobile app, just the web page access.
