Cycling specific chamois under slim fit athletic shorts. 8.5 miles each way on a commute is no place for me to be wearing non cycling clothes.

Expensive, but I love my Tommy John's for any kind of biking.

To elaborate: I find that if you have any sort of quads at all, most boxer briefs tend to ride up my legs even on short distances. I've had moderate success with the Champion C9 from target. I wanted to like Uniqlo but the legs are too short. I'd like to try Ex Oficio but I don't want to spend $30/pair.

I second the champion c9s. They have a version that is more sporty than the all cotton ones, they stay in place better and ride more comfortably.

My compression shorts from under armor work great, the others I've tried didn't.

Hanes cotton boxer briefs for short rides such as local shopping errands. I'm going to try the Champions based on recommendations here.

For longer rides I switch between Baleaf faux-chamois padded undershorts (they're too short to wear without baggies or jeans) and AeroTech Pro shorts. Both are good values and comfy on longer hot sweaty rides, although the Baleaf padding is thicker than I'd like. I prefer lighter material for wicking -- I don't need the padding. The AeroTech seems to wick moisture away more effectively during swampbutt weather.

Cotton boxers FTW! 24 years serious commuting, 9 miles each way, no issues other than buying a set that were too tight around the legs. Other than that one time, everything's groovy. Of course YMMV.

I wear Hanes boxers but I ride my bike in Zoot thin lined tri-shorts. I can walk around with them, but why would I when it's so easy to change my shorts & they take up little to no space to carry. if I go out for easy rides with the family, like on vacation, when we might be walking around a town, shopping or sightseeing, etc, then I'll wear the Hanes boxers

I use some Starter (WalMart I think?) boxer briefs that are a lycra-type material, underneath regular shorts for short rides around town. For commuting (long) and longer rides I wear cycling shorts or bibs. My favorite ones at the moment are the Performance Ultra bibs. They are super comfortable, far better than any other bibs or shorts I own.

What does the size of my quads have to do with your underwear?

My quads are nothing special, but my thigh-fat is impressive enough to cause crotch-bunch, especially in jeans. I don't ride in jeans though, I ride in loose generic athletic shorts.

Whatever Costco sells (Kirkland) is what I wear, and they do fine on my Selle Anatomica Titanico X. I actually only prefer boxer-briefs on the bike, so I wear those for commuting, and tightie-whities under my jeans at work.

I thought this thread was going to be asking about

Boxers:

or Briefs:

(I prefer Boxers).

As for underwear, I like Fruit of the Loom boxer briefs for daily comfort but they're too loose for me on anything but short bike rides. I need something that keeps things in place. That's one of the main reasons I commute in cycling shorts.

Everything rides up. It sucks. I need to find a better solution.

Does anyone know of cycling shorts that don't have a big chamois / pad in them? I don't need the pad, I just want shorts that won't creep up.

It's pretty dry in the Springs IIRC. Would you still be wearing cotton boxers to commute in this heat wave we are having in the upper midwest? It is currently 1:18 am and the temperature is 77°F and the humidity is 85% with a dew point of 72°F. The forecast for Friday is 94°F as the high with the heat index clearing triple digits. I have an 8.5 mile commute.

I grew up in Chicago then lived in Iowa for12 years. I do know the conditions you speak of. I remember going for late summer night rides in cedar rapids and sweating like crazy. I wrote cotton briefs and did end up uncomfortable.

Ex Officio not $30 a pair, more like $20.00 and worth it.

Same here. I wear chamois lined cycling shorts and cycling jersey on my equal distance commutes. To the OP, for shorter commutes up to 2-miles you might look at these underwear www.mackweldon.com I have found these to be the most comfortable underwear I have tried for daily wear and have worn them on the bike for short jaunts. A little pricey but well worth it for me.

Starter compression shorts from Walmart. $9 or $10 a pair. They might even be the same shorts PatrickGSR94 mentioned

A seam ripper is a few bucks, and can be used to remove the chamois from almost any cycle shorts/bibs.

Of course, the suggestion to just buy ready made compression shorts works, too...unless you want/like bibs. "Tri" shorts have minimal padding, usually just a micro-weight fleece pad.

During the temperate months (usually 1+1 months on either side of summer), I find no specific requirements to undergarments, and I'll wear whatever into work (7 miles to, at least 7 back). Rei/Campmoor/EMS all sell some version of polyester boxers/briefs/boxer-briefs, and I find them to work just fine. Wool, too. I've done 30 mile rides in them, and they were tolerable, if not enjoyable.

When the weather gets hot/humid, I exclude cotton from the undergarment lineup. It takes forever to dry, and gets funky from use faster than polyester.

In the winter, I use tights more often than not, which tend to have enough padding/material that I find padded shorts very uncomfortable beneath them.

On a sportive ride, regardless of the time of year, I use padded shorts.

Some people soft pedal to work regardless of the time of year--they don't need special clothes. Some use the commute as training/exercise, and it makes sense for them to dress accordingly--which are you?

Nashbar padded mesh liner briefs are my go to for my 9 mile summer commute; I like to push it. Change at office to New Balance cotton boxer briefs, which are fine for 3 mile rides to client meetings.

Probably too late now, but they did have several endcaps of Hanes and Jockey Lycra compression boxer briefs at $2.50 and $3.50 a pair. Short leg and mid thigh. I stocked up enough for a week between laundry days then.
