First of all, thanks everybody for TONs of great info.. Helped me a lot.
I started commuting previous wednesday, but this was first full week. My commute is 2.5 miles one way now, but next month company I work for changes location, so I will be doing about 6 miles one way. Anxiously looking forward to that.
I must admit, riding in Houston on streets where no bike lane exists is tough.. it seems like 90% of drivers do not consider bicycle as legal vehicle, having right to take any part of their precious lane.. Throughout the week I collected nice bunch of honks, half puzzled/half angry looks and so on. Well, not my problem.
Most hassle, of course, are intersections and highway crossings with right turn lanes.. slowly getting used to. Anyway, commuting is great way to excercise and is FUN

Thanks again for such a nice place to be in!

I hear most of Texas is pretty anti-bike. Great job dude! Even 6 miles one way is not too much, you will soon see yourself settling into a very efficient rhythm. My first time, doing my 9 mile commute (mostly hills) took me close to 1 hour. I have cut this down to roughly 35-40 minutes.

Good luck, and keep spinning them pedals!

That's awesome Maestro! If you ride the same way at the same time, the cagers will start to get used to you and things will get easier. Keep it up!

Yea!!

It's interesting. A few months ago, my office moved, and my commute is now about 1/2 mile further each way. Only a few months later, and I've already got my average time down to the same as it was before, even with the extra distance. Not to say you'll do this with your 6 versus 2.5, but you will constantly improve.

I also just completed my first full week of commuting, my ride is a hilly 13 miles each way. By Wednesday I was hurting but by Friday I found my pace and I really enjoyed the rides. It was a really rewarding week and I'm glad I started this. Good luck.
