I've been through all of the permutations of things that would prevent me being motivated to commute everyday. Those early days I'd focus on how bad I felt taking a car or motorcycle instead or a bicycle. After a short while commuting everyday became a habit. Donning the correct gear for the weather helps along with the proper attitude. I actually prefer commuting in the rain if for nothing else as to keep the MUP traffic down.

Bikes: Not that many, just getting started.

I ride my bike, the bus or both, when i feel like it. Thinking about getting a vehicle at some point, but it has been a good experience for me to be car free. I always seem to buy too many groceries at the store though.

I couldn't motivate myself to ride even though the weather is favorable and I have no early evening appointments. Not sure why.

Tomorrow looks like bad weather, but I'll get my bike etc. ready just in case I can ride, and at least I'll be ready for Wednesday.

I would really love to commute every day but safety comes first to me. I'm not risking my life on bike commuting. Danger is not so much for me to ride through bad weather but more on driver's inability to see me. Visibility goes very low on rainy or snowy day. Slippery or icy roads are also concerns. If a commute route consists of mostly multi purpose paths or very little traffic then I might try but mine is not the case. My route is 12.5 miles each way and has a single lane (each way) all the way with no dedicated bike lane.

For years, we were a one car family. My answer to this type of question was always jokingly, "Sell your car. If my wife needs the car, I still have to get to work."

In 2012, I was struck by a car. Going from coma, to wheelchair, to walker, to cane, to walking and finally back to my bike took months. Since I initially couldn't ride, we had to get a second car for me to get to work. Once I got back to riding, I found that having a car in the driveway was a huge temptation (alarm clock goes off and in my head, "I could get up to start riding or I could sleep another two hours and drive to work."). The car only won out a couple of times before my OCD kicked in and I rode almost every day that I had planned to ride.

Fast forward to summer 2016. That second car (high mileage used car) threw a rod and was out of commission. Since then, I'm riding every day. There are days that I ride to the train station or the bus stop and shorten my commute by 10 or 15 miles. Heck, there are even some days that I take the bus and train almost all the way to work. Luckily, my wife is amazingly supportive and the few times that I've ended up not prepared for cold or rain, she's usually willing to be a bail-out plan.

Nice! My "longer" commute is about the same, 22km (because I'm only 4km from my workplace so the longer commute is for fitness, physical and mental) and I'll try to ride that every day during good weather.

I find my mental state really improves with a ride in to work so I try to ride as often as possible which is close to 4x/wk from June to September. Last April, for the #30DaysOfBiking, I rode 26 days and last June for the Canadian Cycling Challenge, I commuted every work day and at least one day on the weekends (and rode a touch over 1,000km that month).

Riding every day is not necessary for everyone but some, because they don't have a car or are short on funds, use those as motivation. You do not need to ride every day unless you find a reason to do so, including the challenge of trying to do so. But other reasons may motivate you to ride every day or at least try. I'll avoid active thunder storms. You know how you count after a lightning strike until you hear thunder to see how far away it is, 5 seconds = 1 mile, well one day, I was riding home during a warm summer rain when there were 3 lightning strikes about 3-4 minutes apart, the thunder sounded 7 seconds after the first strike, 3 seconds after the second, and after the third, I didn't even count 1 when the thunder sounded, I was inspired to speed up!!

Do what you're motivated to do but certainly don't consider it a requirement to be a part of this group (or even the car-free group, some of whom I'm sure take alternate modes of transportation at times).
