The converse must be, "Cold is 10 degrees cooler than you're used to," right? Dang, it was cold this morning! Today's predicted high is colder than yesterday's morning low. Add in a 10 mph north wind -- why didn't I dig up the winter long-sleeve jerseys last night??


Other than that it was pretty nice; clear, generally light traffic, polite drivers. Just another perfect riding day in paradise!

It's supposed to burn off and show some sun this afternoon; actually through my sunglasses I could see the white disc of the sun this morning.

But tomorrow, this storm will touch down, it will be uninterrupted between China and here.

Did a fair bit of riding on the weekend. I'm taking a rest day. I'm already wishing I rode into work.

The city of Folsom has put up a plethora of signs on the bike route from historic downtown to the rodeo; enough that one is always in eyeshot. It seems a little over the top for a half mile of MUP and sharrows. The city has a love hate relationship with Johnny Cash and the prison. He's the only reason anyone knows the town's name, and that reason links it to the prison, when they'd much rather be known for the gold rush downtown, 19th century hydroelectric power station, pony express, excellent bike trails network, and so on. A few years back one of the council members pushed to get the new post-9/11 bridge bypass for the dam named after him, she went so far as to involve his family, but the rest of the council shut her down hard. Since then everyone has cozied up and they keep naming bike stuff after him for some reason. A pedestrian overpass a few miles from this trail also bears his name.

A very nice commute in this am with the temp at 36 f degrees and mostly clear dark skies. Another morning that I rode the direct route to work. Yesterday leaving work was 56 f degrees and I felt warmer this am as I was dressed for the cold. Yesterday I was wearing shorts and I had no gloves which would have helped.

Yesterday's ride home was mostly windy and not in a helpful manner. I averaged about 1.5mph slower than normal.

Cool at 45F but calm winds this morning. Didn't pull out the long tights yet, but did wear a jacket and lightweight gloves. A little over 16 miles in 58 minutes.

As I had hoped to do, I completed my first micro-adventure on Friday/Saturday (blog post: https://jrtraveljournal.wordpress.co...cro-adventure/), it was fun.

I didn't ride in to work yesterday as it was forecast to be -1C/30F for the morning ride and with the significant rain on Sunday, I was concerned about puddles or surface water freezing on the roads. In the end, it only went down to +1C/34F (sheesh, balmy temperature) but I wasn't prepared to ride when I woke up so I just took the bus.

Today, I rode in: it was a reasonable 9C/48F but it seemed to be colder as my naked hands were rather cold when I arrived at work.

39 degrees F, but no notable wind. I was fine with a sweatshirt and my work slacks, and a pair of Mechanix gloves I threw on, since I couldn't find my good gloves. The cool air was making the eyes water a bit but that "should" lessen as I get used to riding in cooler temps. (I wear prescription glasses so those wrap around Oakley style shades are not an option for me.)

OK I admit it, 41F felt cold. Gotta ease into these new temps

I am yet to start bike commute for this week. Sunday was a tiring day for me, so I rested on Monday. And today morning was just too cold for me to get on the bike.
Rest of the week is going to be a more manageable temp range for me.

45 degrees this morning, only 40 degrees cooler than Sunday afternoon. :/ At least I had the wool jersey, knee warmers, and long gloves out last night.


I didn't have time to find and fix the slow flat this morning, so I swapped wheels, pumped it up, and came to work. Half a mile down the road I started wondering, did I do the same thing to THIS wheel some months back? It did get me to work just fine, I hope it'll get me home too.

This morning, it was 48ºF or so and pretty windy. Most of the wind was in my face. I packed an extra jacket, just in case, and I meant to pack my brand new winter gloves but forgot. But I was OK. The evening promises to be slightly warmer, so I'll be OK.

Wow did I get thrashed by rain this dark morning. It was like someone was hurling buckets of water directly at my face. I got hit in the face by a wet stick that fell from a tree.

Now it's calm and sunny.

I'm running 5 white blinky lights facing forward and 4 red ones facing backwards for these dark rainy mornings.

Oh, someone passed me this morning and turned around and smiled a knowing smile and complimented me on my bike.

Well, all those lights didn't keep the stick from hitting you. But did it give the tree something to aim at?

37°F to start the ride according to my Garmin, need to expand my gear to breathe better. The sweat at the stoplights was getting cold, no way to avoid that on a 16+ mile ride. Starting to run out of daylight however, think i gave up at the end of October last year. Maybe I'll do some one ways this time so i can ride in the daylight.

I ride the last five miles to work daily after driving the first 10. Takes me 25 minutes to go 5.2 miles on my bike. On the way home, it takes me 50-55 minutes to drive the last 10 miles. I would get home at the same time if I rode my bike home instead of driving?!?!

Thank-you. Though because I dress for the weather I am usually not cold when riding in these temps. Also I enjoy being outside so even though the temp is cold if I am dressed appropriately.

A very nice commute this morning with the temp at 39 f degrees and clear dark skies. Yesterday I could see a crescent moon on my way to work today I was only able to catch one glimpse of if over the trees in front of me and it was barely there.

Up and down temps this week. Almost perfect this morning at least. Last commute of the week, after touring 240 miles last week could use a long 4 day break.

North Carolina is as cold as Canada! 42F here this morning. I'm still sticking with shorts though - trying to delay breaking out the tights.

I had to leave about an hour early yesterday because my wife called to tell me the car had a flat tire. She was at home and my son was able to put the donut tire on. I wanted to get home and take it in before the place closed, so took my shorter route home, about 10.5 miles instead of my normal 13+. Managed 17mph and got to the garage in plenty of time.

Wow, that's surprising.

I wore shorts too (but long wool ski socks that end just below my knees). I think my count of days before wearing tights is fewer than yours.
