To expand on that... it was about 8am when I got away from the house with kiddo. We followed our normal route and it was 80F and climbing. Coming home it was 108F according to the forecast. The chart shows 109F at Sac Executive Airport around 5 and it's usually a few degrees lower here. My wife claims it was 118 somewhere but she's always finding the most outlandish number and then exaggerating it a little for effect.
Still beats Arizona. My last memory of that place in summer is helping my parents move some years ago during a record string of 110 degree days, when the temperature at night got down to 90. My poor old Dad with his failing heart and poor circulation kept the house at 80. I had a job nibble from Madison, WI but then I looked up their weather. Under freezing entirely for two months. No thanks! |
A nice ride in this morning with fog but not so heavy you could not see through it. The temp was 52f degrees when I left the house. A man bringing out trash to the curb told me this morning that I had a bright light on my bike. I am glad it is bright, I want and need to be seen by the drivers.

Cool and misty with wet roads from overnight rains. Yesterday afternoon had a bit of a headwind going home, but that was a nice tailwind today.
I stopped and pulled off the road briefly so I could move some good size sticks / branches off the road. They weren't completely blocking and I could get by fine, but they looked big enough to do some damage to a car and/or motorcyclists, one of which went by just after I cleared it. |
Buses! Usually I pass one bus going north on my southward leg. This morning there were 3! And the southbound bus caught and passed me! That's never happened before.

63F, wet, and cloudy - I'll take it!
|
On the warm side of cool (14C/57F), cloudy, and calm. We're heading into a brief heat wave - up to 80F today and might even hit 90F tomorrow!

Entirely pleasant ride this morning. Calm, clear, cool, what more can a cyclist ask? Oh, yeah, I made that long traffic light on green!
|
I rode in yesterday and felt strong. I stayed late and got tired and left my bike at the office and took the subway home. I rode the subway in and plan to ride home tonight even if it rains, which it might.
|
cool and misty morning. Legs are getting stronger everyday. I'll be able to ride the bike 3 times this week.
I planned a bike trip around the Cabot Trail in late september so the legs must be up to the task! |
73F, hazy, came in late due to middle school orientation
|
I might owe SWMBO an apology, the weather station in my neighborhood shows 116.4 yesterday.

Amazing! Just started a new job. 6mi each way on Palo Alto surface streets with a bike bridge over the freeway straight into the office. Bought a commuter bike with flat pedals and a rack, working on a dynamo hub setup.
Bay Area weather means it'll almost never be colder than 50 degrees or warmer than 80 degrees. So thrilled with my new commute! |

I did a fair bit of biking about the island today. I had to go help clean out the kayaks from our weekend trip; which was great. https://goo.gl/photos/XZZ4iks1rib4RKyL9
On the way home I stopped at the neighbors to the in-laws. They had a junk pile from a house that just sold (to friends who moved off the island and regretted it and now are moving back). I ended up with some pots to soak chains in, maybe one for waxing chains. Also I got a new to me hibachi (which was great since my old one (also a roadside find) was starting to act up on the paddle, a nice big shop light, and a few small things. Should I post them in the found while riding thread? So I not have three working gas bbqs that only have cost me money in fuel and $30 in parts. The big one is quite nice also and would cost several hundred to replace; I love "island shopping". Later I took the little girl out for a ride looking for her brother and I picked up an old walkman. Anywho life is good and we're slowly getting ready for school to begin again. I have no jobs lined up though. |
Another nice, cool morning and a little over 16 miles to start the day out. The last third of a mile to my office has a round-about followed by a gentle downhill grade. Today I caught up to a bigger truck going slow through the round-about, then I just tailgated him and coasted at 20mph being dragged along in his draft. That was fun.

I left bright and early yesterday to get finish up some things at work. About 1 mile from my destination I hit a crater of a pothole and heard a "PING!" sound. Suddenly the rear rim was rubbing the brake pad and upon inspection I found a broken spoke. I took it easy on the last mile and made it to work. I was able to drop it off at my friendly local LBS on a morning break and it was ready for my after lunch. $10 well spent dollars for their always great service.

First commute using my "laptop pannier" which is really just a re-purposed zipper binder that my son didn't want any more. It's not perfect, but just using two steel hooks at the top and the strap to cinch it tight it's fast and easy. Very secure, I might just use this until it wears out and then try something more purpose-built.

Left the house this morning at 6am. It was a nice cool 60 degrees, which made the hills seem easier. Was also able to float thru most of the stop lights/signs on my route. Must have been pushing myself though. When I got to work, the legs were complaining about going upstairs! (Or, maybe I'm just getting older?!) Hopefully, the traffic going home will be lighter since I'll be ahead of rush hour!

Today, I'm on jury duty, writing this from the courthouse. I didn't ride my bike because I wasn't sure about the ability to lock up.
I left work yesterday after sunset. It was raining lightly when I left. As my ride progressed, the rain got a bit heavier but never truly heavy. I was on my racing bike, so no fenders or anything. It wasn't cold, so I was OK. The only thing approaching discomfort was the rain splashing on my butt, but it really wasn't bad. It was the first time in a long time that the path was nearly empty because of weather that discourages people, so it was nice to have it to myself. The rain and the darkness limited my vision a little. My eyeglass prescription is mild, and I can ride without my glasses if I want to, but I prefer to keep them on to protect my eyes from debris and it's where I hang my mirror. My vision through my glasses and in my mirror was impaired but not terribly. I just slowed down a bit, and the emptiness of the path made it easy. I had a big, strong tail wind, which made the effort easy, and it reduced the wind noise that my ears normally get. So it was a terribly pleasant ride, and I was grateful for it. |
Chilly, in a way that didn't jibe with what the thermometer was telling me, hazy - the sun is very orange this morning, and breezy. Going to be hot and windy for the trip home.
Leaves are starting to turn. Autumn is nigh. |
Nice ride yesterday afternoon -- cool enough to add 6 miles to the trip home. :)
This morning we've got Hurricane Harvey Hangover. Overcast, cool, everything is gray and blah. But at least it's not raining! (yet?) |
