That Old North Wind (30 MPH+ Worth!)
Six miles of my nine mile uphill commute home were into this 30+ mph cold, north wind.
I had ducked behind a building to make an adjustment to my gear, and this is what it sounded like as I rode back onto the street and turned north into the wind.

The video makes me feel better about a few of the commute's I've had lately. 15mph to 23-30mph wind gusts and always seems to be in the wrong direction. What wears me out more than the wind speed is how it acts around the buildings, over the last couple years have made a mental catalog of all the places wear the wind will suddenly switch directions.

That's everyday here. Get low, get hard, mostly get over it because it's a fact of life.
Sorry if that's a little harsh, but, the annoyance of the wind will fade.

Gaelen, where are you? I pretty much agree. The annoyance hasn't gone away, but it has diminished a lot. I still report on it, since it is a prominent element of my commute, but I no longer resent it. It's just one of every day's challenges. I've been riding this windy route for a little over two years now.

Wichita Falls, TX. Very bottom of tornado alley.
I don't want to diminish the accomplishment of riding in 30+ mph winds, but, everyday is a steady 15-20 mph plus gusts up to 50 during the summer. Imagine riding into a giant hair dryer everyday.

Pretty much confirms my impressions of some recent rides here in Texas. Heading NE I was faster than ever without even trying -- definitely wind assisted. And the trip home heading SW was exhausting after a 45 mile ride.

That is where an e-bike makes going home fun!
It is why I ride without panniers (I use a messanger bag) and drop bars.
Weather always comes out of the west, and some of the strongest is from the north. My ride home is North West of course, so if its blowing, I'm going upwind.
Its always so calm in the morning when I'm going down wind...

we have the winds today 20-30 mph avg and gusts to 45mph and the potential for thunderstorms during my commute home time. I might just get a ride today.

Hey mcours2006, I just noticed that I also bookmarked this world wind map. Interestingly, at the moment, the south winds in the US are meeting the north winds in Canada, right at the Great Lakes. I guess that happens a lot.

Just about right, too, on my commute home.

Today we're having gusts up to 60 mph. Riding into work would have been hellish.

Hellish only if you have to ride against it. It was at my back this morning, and man, was it ever nice.
I'll pay for it on the way home though. I'm hoping it'll change direction.

Back around 1970 I had a 24" Schwinn Stingray with high riser bars and a banan seat. One windy day I opened my windbreaker and held the bottom front corners in my hands as I gripped the handlebars. The wind was behind me and oh, wow! Full sail riding! The ride back into the wind was tough.

I busted my tail and beat this storm home!
avg 17.7mph for the ride.
Just a few rain drops right as I got home. So glad I made it because the sky fell after I made it home.
Legs were tired today on the way in 37F this morning and supposed to be colder tomorrow

FWIW Colorado Springs is not the windiest place on earth, neither strength-wise or ofteness-wise; far from it. However, because of the proximity of the airport to the mountains we have a higher incidence of wind-shear. Hong Kong's old airport also ranked high, but I believe they built a new one in a more favorable location.
Wind-shear is not going to affect anyone cycling, as it is a horizontal wind vortex formed by air spilling down the mountains.
I just thought it was interesting. I saw a documentary about it on tvonceand think about it everytime I fly into or out of COS.
