I traditionally have my barber do #2 on the sides and #4 on top. My hair is also thinning (I'll be 40 next year). I grow a full beard. A while back I did the opposite... 90's grunge hair and I would trim the face with the clippers once a week. hated combing hair and the helmet head that went with wearing a lid.
I did get a neck gator to wear during cold weather. Allows me to keep the beard all winter longer. Love it! But man...the bald spot my dad gave me is growing at a pretty alarming rate. I'm pretty close to throwing in the towel on hair altogether as well, and just keeping it buzzed down all over at a #1 or #2. I'm not vain, but the shaved look just seems a bit severe looking for me. And I have a funny shaped head, all ears and nose lol :o |

Anybody remember the Flowbee? I'm not sure if it's still around. It is (was) a gadget you connected to your vacuum. The air suction powered cutting blades and sucked up the cut hair all in one. I'm gonna see if they still exist.
I'll be damned... https://www.flowbee.com/ -Kedosto |
Balding on top, ponytail, I haven't had a haircut in years. People probably think it's a misbegotten fashion statement but it's convenience.

Sad that I missed this thread and am late to the party. Hair shavers of the world rejoice! :D Like the OP, I also shave my head. But I use a #7 on top, #3 on the sides and lower back and #1 on the sideburns going down only. Then try to clean up the back with the razor as best I can. But that last part is the only tough one. I either need a second mirror behind me or my wife to help with it once in a while. I tried a baseball cap on backwards and pressed down. But that didn't really work as well as I expected to even out the back hair line. What do you non totally bald guys do for the back of the neck?
Edit: Anyone ever try the Flowbee? Kind of smart having the vacuum and razor all in one type of thing. |

My brother-in-law had one of those in the 90's. I have three nephews who to this day get surly at the very mention of the name.

My favorite stylist (I gave up on barbers around age 12 when he'd just chop my cowlicks off and then I'd have a bald spot!) works at a place that doesn't take appointments. After waiting one day and getting bumped not once, not twice, but three times by folks magically appearing from shopping at the grocery next door who were in front of me, I gave up.
Wife has been cutting it for a few years now and does a very good job. I only cut it around 3 times a year. Oh, and the opposite of bald. All my balding friends comment on my 'do, and guys rarely comment on other guy's hair:) But, they make fun of me at the beach since I have almost zero body hair (naturally). |

Thanks, SloButWide. I'll do that. On the one hand, I've developed an impressive skill of using scissors and the mirror. On the other hand, it's not all that worthwhile.
