Anyone carrying a thermos for coffee? Looking for the best option. Ideally I would like it to fit in my liter cage. Maybe keep hot for 2 hours or so, with about a 45 minute commute in below freezing weather...

I have 2 of these and swear by them.

They fit in a standard bottle cage nicely. They will keep something hot or cold for hours. So they work well for both water and coffee. (And they don't hold the coffee smell/taste after washing so you can switch to water)

There are a THOUSAND options for similar bottles. Some are complete junk. Some are ridiculously expensive. (This same bottle made by Yeti costs like twice this much. For a bottle.) This one works just as well as a Yeti at half the price.

They have them at Target too. But I've never seen the unpainted ones there. I recommend the unpainted ones because I think the powder coating on these is cheap. All the ones at Target are chipped. I think a bottle cage would kill the coating. But the stainless steel unfinished one that I have, not a scratch on it after 6 months of daily use and regular rides in an aluminum bottle cage.

I have tested them by putting hot water and ice in them (not at the same time obviously) and left them on my kitchen counter. The ice is still frozen after 24 hours. The water was still hot at least overnight.

Thanks for the input, I was looking at the yeti rambler but seen a lot of mixed reviews. This looks like a good low risk choice

That's the other thing. It's a low risk choice.

I have the screw on cap. It has to be completely removed to drink from it. (And I cut the strap that holds the cap on. It just got in the way)

They offer a sip lid for this bottle. It's like $5 at Target. But it's not a sealed lid. It will leak on a bike.

The lip of the bottle is folded over and polished so it's a round comfortable lip to but near your mouth. It's not a sharp metal edge.

There are a number of these threads with good answers, too bad the search function doesn't work very well.

I like Contigo mugs, some of which fit in bottle cages, but my commute really isn't long enough to stop and drink and there's free coffee when I get there.

And I think my trusty Thermos mug is still going strong after starting to use it around 2010 or so. Some of those older recommendations were pretty good!

Except that the product from 2010 may no longer be offered and if it is it may have been dramatically changed by the manufacturer.

I use an insulated Hydra Flask. It keeps coffee hot for half a day and fits in my bottle cage. I have used it to keep water cold forever also.

True, there's benefits to both views.

But what if I want to carry coffee for the cold morning commute and ice cream for the hot afternoon commute? These things are important in Texas weather.

Why wouldn't that work? Those are at different times.

Also, I want to work at a place that gives ice creme to take home at the end of the day.

I can understand where your coming from to a point, I’ve been on this forum for a while and I read more then I post. I felt a new thread would help my decision more then an older one. I’m sure you are a lot more active here then I am and see more multiple repeat threads then I do. I’m going to take the advice of the first response and order the amazon link, thank you for that!!
To respond to the hydo flask option, I do currently have one myself that I use for water but never considered using it for coffee. I fear using mine for coffee for 3-4 months would leave a little bit of the taste in it when I would switch back to water in the spring l, they are costly so I don’t think I will invest in one to dedicate for winter when there’s a more cost effective option available, but thank you!!!

Also just picked up a S'well thermos, a bit pricey @$35, but has many fans. Too soon for a review on this product.

Had a Nissan 20oz thermos that lasted for years until someone stole it at work.

Just do some homework and read the reviews before buying. Lot of good options out there for hot and cold drinks and has the right dimensions for bike use.

I have put hot chocolate into a "polar" water bottle, but it cools down in an hour or so.

I've heard that these 16 oz and 20 oz Stanley thermoses fit well in bottle cages, but I haven't sprung for one yet.

I think I have this Contigo mug up in Portland. It does fit in the cage well, but I haven't used it that much with the bike. At least I think that is the one as I don't have it with me here :(

Searching for content on this forum using Google is perhaps most effective, but it takes a lot of effort - maybe 2-3 minutes.


I still love my Stanley one-hander thermos after a couple years of daily use and a couple of nasty crashes. The thermos got dinged up, but still functions like a champ.

....reminds me of one of the classic dumb blonde jokes......

Mine just finally arrived (second Kickstarter Campaign).

I'm not sure if they're taking regular orders yet.

I haven't had much of a chance to try it out yet. But, as someone mentioned earlier, unfortunately they aren't bike cage friendly :(

That's the one I'd replace mine with if mine ever fails. I think I'm going to have to loose it to replace it though.

My update: I ended up getting an 18 once hydro flask. I preheated it with some hot water yesterday then filled with coffee. Had about an 2 1/2 hour ride in around negative 5 degrees with the wind chill each way. Only opened the flask about 4 times during the ride and the coffee stayed drinkable warm till around the 2 hour mark. On the return trip I filled it with water and the water stayed drinkable without ever freezing. Thanks for all the input, I’m very happy with my purchase

I actually just received one for Xmas (swag from Roche Pharma) and bought one for £6 at the local "hardware/DIY shop." In the end, they both keep coffee warm for about 12 hours and don't contain glass like some of the other products on the market.

However, one has a lip so that when I screw back on the cup/cap the remnants cannot drip over the side, while the other doesn't have this, so the sides are always filthy.

You really need to try before you buy or have a B&M store with a return policy.
