First commute on the new-to-me Trek 890. Sideways rain, 25 mph head wind, hail, and 18-wheeler road spray on the way home.

This week it's been heavy rain off and on through the day, and we expect that to go on through the weekend. But it's been variable enough that I can hit the gaps between storm cells. I stayed off the Greenway today though. I just don't feel like dealing with the sticks and standing water, and the mud that washes over the path.

I'm grateful for all this rain recently. We've really needed it.

Last night's ride was like riding in October; the heavy overcast made it as dark as a dusk ride right before the time change.

This morning the overcast continued, and it was SO COOL!! Unfortunately I had to be the house-husband before leaving home, so I didn't have a chance to extend the ride. I just hope the thunderstorms hit early or late, and let me complete my first round trip of the week.

80°F is cool for this time of year, so I'm grateful for it, but it's so very humid. I made an effort (?) to ride as slowly as possible today to prevent a little bit of sweating. It kind of worked. Lucky I work in a cool place to dry off in.

I took the subway to work yesterday and took Citi Bike home. I love the program but not the bikes. They weigh 50 lbs, and I don't like riding upright. The ride was annoying. I think the bike is OK when the ride is less than three miles, but my ride is 6-1/2 miles. I sort-of reduced the annoyance by riding slowly. I ran into overtime. We get charged when the ride is longer than 45 minutes.

60F, light mist.

Got yelled at by a salmon. Bad enough that they can't ride legally but getting proactively offensive about it is icing on the cake.

For going the right way?

My car is still being repaired so I've been commuting every day. (2 months now, ECU is fried and it's rare) Commuting plus lots of time at the local bike park means my legs are getting soooo tired.

Yesterday AM was an interesting commute: there's this guy splayed out on the sidewalk with a frantic girlfriend standing over him saying he's OD'ing. No breathing and barely a pulse (one heartbeat in like 5 seconds). I phoned 911 and they guided me through CPR over the phone. Some other passerby kept an eye on my bike. (It would be classic Vancouver for it to get stolen.) I did the chest compressions and made the GF do the breaths. The guy finally made a gurgle/gasp after 5 minutes, and the Fire Dept came a few minutes later. Ambulance arrived 1 minute after that. They said he wasn't gonna die, so I left. I was only 15 minutes late for work. Looking forward to more 'boring' commutes!

I believe this is a new one for this forum at least. Nice job on that. And so scary knowing what drugs can do to a person and/or what a person can do to themselves with drugs.

On my ride home Wednesday I saw another cyclist coming in from a side street. He looked to be moving pretty fast so I waved him to go ahead of me. And then I hopped on his wheel. He pulled me for a bit on a mostly flat and downhill section. Then he stood up to crank up the next hill. I did the same and stayed with him. At the top he sat down and slowed down. I passed him and said, "You flew up that hill." I figured he may then draft me for a bit. After a bit I looked behind and he was gone. I felt a little guilty that I had drafted him.

Later that night I looked on Strava and checked the Fly Bys. Sure enough there he was. In fact, I didn't even know it, but he had been behind me (maybe drafting, maybe not) before I even saw him. He had simply take a different road for a moment when I did see him. And the reason he was gone when I looked back was that he did a U-turn and when back to where he started from.

I drove on Thursday, but shouldn't have.

It was raining lightly when I left this morning. It stopped about 3 miles in, but the roads were still plenty wet.

Woah! I've commuted full time for some 8 years now and never had that much excitement on any of my commutes... and hoping I don't! Another benefit of bike commuting - saving your life and potentially someone else's. Nicely done!

Today's my only ride of the week because of work travel - really messes up my mojo. I've been able to limit travel but not eliminate it... yet!

pdlamb 08-03-18 07:33 AM

Today's ride was beautiful. 70F (cooler even than the air-conditioned house!), clear, calm. I thought about extending the ride, but I did a dozen fast miles with a group last night before heading home, so this old body needs some recovery.

I was going to take a variant route to work (call it route 1F or so) to miss a section of street the city dug up. (I think they replaced the sewer line before repaving the street.) The excitement was the police academy practicing traffic direction. Nice for me, the trainees waited 3-4 seconds for me to roll through the intersection where the light would have turned red. Rolling at speed, I missed the turnoff. I managed to avoid the worst of the 1" gravel on the road destruction zone.

Awesome commute, the rains dried up like magic, just fluffy clouds and blue skies, perfect comfort. Even a engine-torturing close pass by a landscape truck (Aguilar Tree for future reference) didn't really ruffle me.

surak 08-03-18 12:19 PM

It has been misty for the past few mornings, but today was the first one of those mornings when I rode. I didn't want all the moisture on the ground to kick up and splatter me, so I put my Crud Roadracers back on. Even though I fiddled with it for a good while before heading out, the front fender kept rubbing due to very low vertical clearance from tire to fork. Previously, I'd used a piece of tape stuck underneath the fork to hold the fender in place. Since I'd gone a good two months without the fenders, the tape was making things worse, so eventually I pulled off the road and used my multitool to poke the tape out.

It was a nice cool commute this morning though a bit humid as per usual. Wearing shorts and t shirt and changing at the office has been fantastic.

After HSV trip last week, fire weather and gastroenteritis this week. Monday, I pray! Depends on MRI of wife’s knee

hay 08-05-18 02:56 PM

I had a crash on Friday. I absent mindedly neglected to cross a trolly track propely and paid for it. The outcome is a skint knee, sore sholder and opposite hip.

It was one of those" and the next thing I knew, I was picking myself up off the ground " things.

The bikes fine tho😃

The heat is on! Might try seeing some sights this week since the boys are at the grandparents. With the heat not sure!

Ditto! We're back to the 90's - the springlike weather was nice while it lasted

mgw4jc 08-06-18 06:58 AM

Back to the Monday. I had a layover at the gym on this morning's commute. Quiet morning there for about 45 minutes of catching news highlights as I pick things up and put them down.

Humid and hot this week. Overcast skies last week helped keep the afternoon highs in the low 80s. We're looking at low 90s this week.

pdlamb 08-06-18 07:25 AM

Gawrsh. 70F Friday morning, NWS says it was 79F at 8:00 this morning. I think I lost my heat adaptation over the last 10 days or so.

Still, nice ride in; sunny, fairly calm traffic. Why can't it be downhill both ways?!
