hay, I hope you heal fast.
Not that it's commuting, but on Saturday, I had an epic ride in the countryside. We have a home in Upstate New York where virtually every road is spectacular. I even took Rt 209 which I generally avoid, and I found even that isn't so bad. It was hot, and I was sweaty but well dressed for it. I came upon a swimming hole where lots of folks were swimming. I took my shoes and socks off and got in the water. From all the rain we've had, the stream was deep and strong and super cold. I got out and dried off on the bike. It felt great to be covered in ice water on the bike. Some other cyclists came along when I was leaving, and I told them they should do it, too. I have my wife's car today, so I'll use it for hauling errands. I drove to work for the first time on this job I started in February. Parking is insane in this city. I did some online shopping and found a garage that isn't all that close to work but is the cheapest around. I had trouble finding the entrance, so that took some time wading through traffic. While waiting for a light in the car, I stopped in front of this place which I have heard so many amazing things about. After dropping off the car, I grabbed a Citi Bike bike and pedaled 0.9 miles to work. https://ridewithgps.com/photos/4101828/large.jpg |
Had a week vacation, so back to the commute today. Could feel my legs weren't quite awake for it this morning but still a pretty nice ride in. Temps are climbing along with the humidity, making for sweaty rides

We had huge storms over the weekend, with a few wind gusts over 90 mph. We see 50-60 mph gusts fairly frequently so our trees are mostly used to it. 90 though is above normal so as a result there were a lot of trees and limbs down. I rode the hybrid knowing there would be a billion sticks on the road and thought the fatter tires would be better for the situation than my road bike. By this morning most of the big limbs had been dragged out of the way and were sitting on the side of the roads/MUP so I didn't have to change my usual route.
Halfway to work it started to rain. This was not in the forecast at all, so I hadn't dressed appropriately. I was in my work clothes and got a bit wet. At least I had the hybrid so the fenders kept a lot of the muck off of me. 1/4 mile from work where I come off the MUP is a nice hotel. When the big celebrities are in town to perform that's usually where they stay so often times there are tour busses parked along side of the street. Last week I saw the busses for Def Leppard and Journey. This morning I rode by Alice Cooper's entourage. Kept my eye out for him, but he wasn't around while I went by. Saw his concert last night. At 70 years old he can still bring it. |
Skipped the ride today because I thought I'd need the truck for something. The something got rescheduled for tomorrow. So I'm not riding tomorrow either.
Honestly I'm fine with it. Outdoors in central CA is pretty grim right now. |
Just before 5pm yesterday this bit of weather moved in. My commute is from Huntersville to Mooresville, though not on I-77 of course. It was lightning and thundering a lot for almost 30 minutes. I waited it out in the lobby of my building. I started as the rain was letting up and could still see the lightning and hear the thunder heading out. When I got home I wiped the bike down pretty good to get the grime off. I think the wet ride home was better than the 90+ temps it would have been had the storm not come through.
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...03519660db.jpg Clear and sunny this morning. I somehow managed to average 17mph for the ride in. |
Bike wash day - rain, avoided the worst of the thunderstorms. The good part is it's cooled off considerably
|
3rd day out of the last 4 where we had very strong storms overnight. When I left the house it had just stopped raining, so I had wet streets but no precipitation falling. Took the hybrid with fenders. The river is getting pretty high but hasn't yet reached the banks.
Still lots of debris on the road/MUP in the form of leaves, sticks and branches. The trees that came down over the weekend are now mostly cut up and stacked in piles waiting to be hauled away. |
Hottest it's been this year, IIRC, yesterday afternoon, then a couple big thunderstorms in the area cooled things down (even though they missed us). This morning there wasn't a cloud in the sky, and it was a very pleasant ride.
My normal route, the city's dug up one street to repair the sewer (I think) before they repave. Municipal election's still a couple weeks away, so they've left the street in a mess. It's a bit tricky to re-route around that particular street, and around all the school traffic as well, but suburban streets offer enough alternatives to make it possible. |
After dealing with car problems that took up (exercise/fun) riding time and helping with a big move I was finally able to ride to work again today. It's still too warm for me, but not anywhere near as bad as other places making for a nice ride.
|
First day back after a three-week vacation. I rode recreationally once on one of my first days off, then didn't even touch a bicycle the rest of the time. Felt it this morning.
|
These are the dog days, for sure. We have an air quality alert. We get these in the summers. It's bad out there. Lucky I have air conditioning this summer.
|
One road I'm on for about 5 miles runs parallel in between two highways that have heavier traffic. Yesterday afternoon one of those highways had a wreck which backed up traffic there and many people detoured over to my route. Way more traffic than normal. Cars are usually able to easily pass me (they have to go into oncoming lane to do so), but with more traffic, they couldn't. I pulled off a couple of times to let cars go by.
Warm and humid this morning. I left a few minutes early and added a couple of extra miles for 15. |
Dodged showers going home last night -- threaded my way between them, to be blunt. So this morning it was nicely cool, but approximately 100% RH. One of the ladies at work caught me wringing my headband out, wrinkled her nose, and said, "Is that sweat??" Yes. Yes, it was, and it's only in the mid 70s.
|
i got the weather app fake-out this morning.
first glance: 70 degrees - nice! relatively cool for a july morning in chicago. a second later: 69 degree dew point - booooooooooooooooooooooo......... effing disgusting air. |
We have an air quality alert too: smoke from BC forest fires. It's pretty hazy, but was worse yesterday. Or maybe I'm already used to it.
Decent ride in, but it will take several more rides before I feel like I have my legs back. |
Commute was good, after taking that week and a half off my legs are not up for this everyday thing. They'll get there though. Temperatures are steadily climbing so it'll be a warm one on the way home, mornings have been fairly cool so that's nice. Starting to get sick of the construction on the paths I use, makes crossing some of the busier roads tougher. Usually use the crosswalks to trigger the lights earlier so they know I'm there, but the path under construction I can't get to the button.

I really didn't feel like riding. The hot and humid and polluted weather is making everyone feel lousy. But I told myself to ride anyway. As I was getting ready, I realized I don't have my lock with me, and I would need it for my doctor's appointment which was on the way to work, so I couldn't ride my bike. I rode Citi Bike to the doctor, and I didn't decide between the subway and Citi Bike until after my appointment. I took Citi Bike. I'm really glad I did, because it did me good. I don't know how bad air has to be for exercise to become inadvisable, but I think it needs to be worse than it is now, because the air and heavy breathing did me good. I took a big witch hazel sponge bath upon arriving, and now I feel quite good.
|
Lower 70's but it was muggy! Starting to feel the effects from the wreck that killed the Trek again. It's like a slow heavy dull pain in the front of my head and heat doesn't help. Hope I can keep riding everyday!

I made it home last night before some evening storms hit. But I was out driving in it to pick up my son. We saw a lot of lightning and some heavy rain. Traffic was stopped at one point and people were doing U-turns and we couldn't figure out why. We got up to the point they were stopping and I just kept going. Only when I had already crossed it did I see the downed power line. Apparently you aren't supposed to go over those, but I'm not sure why if it is fully down on the road. A bit later I crossed another one, again not really seeing it until I was on it.
And so the storm left quite a bit of twigs and branches on the couple of MUPs I rode this morning. One good sized tree was the biggest victim I saw. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...76c4ac5ae8.jpg |
Rain and cooler weather out, heat and humidity in. Like others have described, morning temps were in the upper 60's but the humidity is so high it was almost cold. I might be imagining this but it seems like there are more bicycle commuters this year. I don't know what's changed but it's a good thing!

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...76c4ac5ae8.jpg This is a really nice place to bicycle to work. An afternoon of thunderstorms stopped at quitting time (fitting, don't you think?) yesterday, so the ride home was cooler than normal. I took it easy this morning, and it was cool again this morning, barely made it to the upper 70s by the time I got to work. Cops were out writing tickets at one congested intersection, I guess for blocking traffic when the light changed. I think they messed with the light timing, because I made the green from half a block away after waiting for the guy in front of me to clear the stop sign. |
I avoided the section of path with the downed tree. Not sure if they've cleared it up or not. pdlamb, I hadn't thought about poison ivy on a tree like that. Good thing to watch for. I've had my share of it already.
I found this little guy who was a bit camera shy. Or perhaps he just wasn't ready to face the world so early. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...ea7be72745.jpg |
Took a shortcut today on a mountain bike trail, though I was on a cross bike with touring tires. I've taken it before, and every time, I spin out and stall on one of the steeper sections, and today was no exception. Had to walk uphill for about a minute. The trail takes about 3km off my regular route, but doesn't save much time because I can't ride nearly as fast. Still, it's a nice change once in a while.

This AM there was a barge full of scrap cars and appliances that was on fire. Air quality sucks. Usually I figure that bike commuting increases my lifespan, but probably not today's commutes.
|
Temp this morning was mid 60's but felt cold because of the humidity. Anyone else noticing the sunrise is getting noticeably later?
