Are you saying it's more dangerous on a bike in NYC than in other places? If so, I'd like to know what you know. Those are some pretty incendiary words there, especially about New Yorkers' motivations for living here. I'm happy you like where you live, and I bet you'd be just as happy if you didn't ridicule others for their choices and circumstances.

No I'm saying you live where you live for the job opportunities... in Gotham,
the risks are just part of the deal.

Here * you can make $30K as a % of the catch, Commercial fishing, crew,

but you risk the things that can happen at sea
with nothing but water as far as you can see ...

to the horizon.. 360 degrees.. & hope the Coast Guard can find you
when the boat loses power or starts sinking..

You're making assumptions that are not true. I was born here, and my family is here. If that were not true, I would live elsewhere.

I think you're also making assumptions about cycling safety here. I might not argue it's unusually safe, but I don't think it's unusually dangerous, either. One useful side effect of congested traffic is that it is slow.

Exactly. Assuming we are just here for the money is extremely narrow minded.

And yes, the speed limit in the city is now 25mph. Not always respected, but I know a lot of cabbies and "ride-sharing" drivers are scared to go too far over because of the consequences it could have on their livelihood (and it actually makes things kinda fun on certain stretches of road where you know they are trying to keep right at that limit, and you can try to keep up with them on your bike).

You Just cannot just buy*safety when in such a densely packed city .
you have to watch you tuckus and be aware..

* other than armored stretch Limo and falanx of armed Goons, around it.

Ok, it's pretty clear you don't know what you are talking about.

OP, do you like the way the Specialized Sirrus rides? How would you compare it with your older mountain bike? It looks like the Sirrus came with 32mm tires so they should be plenty wide enough for commuting. Some suggestions:

- Could some of the traffic be avoided with a different route? I did that with one of my routes to home via Hackensack. I also don't ride Riverside Drive as much since St Nicholas has bike lanes in both directions.
- How did the car touches happen? Could they be avoided by (staying behind the car, giving more passing room, signalling with hands, etc)?
- Do you ride in the rain? If so, then consider tires that have better grip in the wet and/or using less tire pressure.
- Do you stop at red lights? I usually do but maybe go through some with no road on my side ("T" intersection). I try to keep it at a minimum since I have been ticketed and have seen other cyclists getting ticketed by police for running red lights, stop signs, having no brakes on fixed gear, etc.
- Do you use a front and rear light on your bike? I keep both in my backpack in case I need them. They see heavy use in rain, fog and shorter light days. Some could argue to use them all the time.
- Are you riding with a helmet? If not, then consider doing so.

Use helmet guys!

So living free out in Rural Free lands in SW Oregon residents still rely on government (Coast Gaurd) resources? Interesting

fietsbob 07-28-18 01:39 PM

NW, On the Columbia River .. SW is Coos Bay ,

you ever eat fish , salmon?

SE Oregon , USFS , and BLM,
or maybe you want to trash the Malheur Wildlife Refuge

It's been done before..

But the pardon from the POTUS is not guaranteed

Had fish Fajitas for dinner, not Salmon or any other fish from around Columbia River. The River might be partially polluted with heavy metals upstream before it gets into Your state of Oregon, The fish you make your living from might be poison to some degree if it has been through Columbia river,

Like guns or cars, there are no dangerous bikes, there are only dangerous people. Any bike with brakes and good tires is safe. Riders who listen to music, check their phones every 2 minutes, ride drunk or stoned, or who don't keep their bikes in decent shape are dangerous.

PaulH 07-29-18 06:55 AM

I'm puzzled by the comment about being brushed by cars and bikes. As others have commented, this is unusual. In 60 years of riding, a lot of it in heavy Washington, DC traffic, I can't recall every being brushed, On the other hand, bikes are designed with different levels of stability, and hybrids generally have less trail than mountain bikes, which are intended for going downhill quickly on rough surfaces. A lot of people use mountain bikes refitted with slick (not-knobby) tires for commuting, The Dutch bikes have a lot of trail and are very stable. Wide tires also help.

PU Contamination in the water, locals go fishing but mostly catch and release, locals won't consume the fish,

Yes, Manhattan Project and Hanford was paid by our tax dollars to defeat communist block and for you to leave freely in beautiful state of Oregon and make false assumptions about places where you nave have been to.

Yes, This is not "Fake News" really because it was on "Twitter" and "Facebook " and it also mentioned people live in the cities just because they want to make more money and City is a dangerous place to live at.
