Well, I joined the bee in my helmet club today, sucker got in there and buzzed around, I undid the strap with one hand and swung the helmet off and swung it around in the air like a cowboy, yeehaw! Then a shake of the head that made my lips flop like a dog's then put the helmet back on, maybe they should have named the pneumo the buggo lol.

I am deadly alergic to bees. I dread the day I get stung riding. I will have to immediatly jab myself with my epi-pen full of epinepheren (BTW, it feels like a firecracker going off in your hand) and call 911 and wait for the ambulance. Do you think they will let me take my bike to the hospital with me?

Yeah, I'm bee, wasp, portuguese man'o'war, and all kindsa stuff proof, but I feel sorry for those who are allergic to bees. I grabbed a type of bee called a sweat bee out of the air once and that little guy stung me good. Bee stings are still not fun, they kinda hurt!

I was thinking the little guy would crawl around and end up where he's pinched, then decide it's sting time. But really, with a Giro helmet, it's easy to undo the strap one handed and still hang onto the thing.

Unfortunately I hit one head (or rather, lip on) on a couple of weeks ago.

It felt like a slight tap initially, but stung like hell after a few minutes. By the time I got home my bottom lip looked like a bicycle inner tube !

I got one in a motorcycle helmet once. Big ol' bumblebee and I'm wearing a full face motocross helmet. That was a fun dance.

I was going fast on a motorcycle and a big bee hit my chest and fell into my shirt pocket. It stung me through the shirt. I pulled the shirt away and looked down under my shirt and thought it was gone, and kept going. It stung me again in the same place, man did it hurt. I drove right up into someone’s front yard on the perfect new grass. Jumped off the bike threw my helmet off and ripped off my shirt. It took me a couple of minutes to figure out that the bee was in my shirt pocket.
I tried whipping the shirt on the ground, the bike, etc. The bee was still buzzing...I finally figured out that I had to turn the shirt inside out and knock the bee out. It took a couple of minutes to get that right. First I figured I would smash the shirt on the ground with my helmet to kill/stun the bee. Finally I got the bee out, it was still alive. I stomped on it for a long time and it still did not get squashed on the soft grass.

While I am standing there looking at the bee, I hear people laughing and talking.....


I look up at the house, and on the front porch was a huge wedding party and the guests all watching me and laughing their brains out............

2manybikes - That's priceless. For the rest of their lives, the people at that party will have a unique story to tell. I'd be proud of the fact that tales of my antics would have entertained many, many people.


My insect story - I got a bee in my mouth once, while going hard up a steep hill. That's not a pleasant place to be stung. Nor is it a pleasant place to fall off your bike. However, as luck would have it, both of those things happened to me that day.

A couple weeks ago, I had a wasp incident. When I bike, I wear cycling liner shorts with athletic shorts over top. One day, when I was nearly at work, I felt a prick on my left hip. I rubbed it and found nothing but felt a few more pinches. I pulled up my shorts and a wasp dropped out. The wasp was pinned between my loose shorts and tight shorts so I got stung in the same spot several times. It's a good thing getting stung doesn't affect me too much...just more of an annoyance. If I wore tight cycling shorts, I never would have to worry about that again...but I'm still using the same setup.

I got stung by a wasp the other day riding, and I've had hundereds of bumble bees smack me in the head or shirt while riding. Can't they see where they fly?

Luckily I haven't been stung by a bee on my bike... yet. I expect to fall off when it happens.

Man, that story with the wedding party is awesome. It beats my friend's tale of puking on a church lawn just when a wedding was letting out!

This thread has me spooked. Every time I think I feel something inside my helmet, I get nervous. This morning it happened twice. I hate bees. Not allergic, but the stings bother me for days.

You have to go very slowly and announce your pass. They have the right of way and they know how to enforce it!

Why do you think they're called Bumble bees? I've watched 'em run into the side of a house... and I can tell you with absolute certainty that the house had the right of way. "Bump"... move over a couple feet... "Bump"... move over again... "Bump"... move over again, finally it's past the corner of the house and it flies away.

If anything I suspect they may be generally flying toward you because if you're anything like me, you wear bright colors... as do flowers. I've had bugs fly up and check me out while I'm standing still, then fly away when they figure out that I'm not a flower.

I generally don't wear bright colors, but it's the worst when you have that one splash of color or something that must just be the right kind of UV reactive, so all day long you have bees circling around trying to figure out where to stick their little nectar tubes.

I was just stung on my chest last week when a wasp flew down my jersey.... I should keep that thing zipped!

I'm thinking of attaching some kind of netting over, or inside, my helmet, to avoid having a wasp or a bee getting stuck in there.

Although I don't keep track specifically, it seems that about every third ride I'll manage to get some sort of flying insect into my helmet-- hard to look manly when you're shrieking like a schoolgirl and ripping your helmet off!

I did get a little knat-type bug flying around between my eyeglasses and my eye one day. Blink-Blink...no serious bee trouble yet, but did have an almost collision with one, one day. Wow, I hope I never get one stuck in my helmet...

I was wondering if it was just me, or the color.
My bright yellow windbreaker seems to attract the bees, it's not neon just yellow like a flower would be. Good for on road visibility, but not good for off road, the bees do seem to like it. A good friend went mountain biking with another friend who had something in her hair that had a floral smell. She did not get stung but the bees followed her around so much they had to quit and go home.

Not to be morbid, but that's the funniest thing I've read so far on these fora.

Last summer I got stung by a bee on the lip as I was riding along. I guess it didn't like getting smacked by some cyclist so it stung. by the time I got home my face was so swollen, that my wife freaked out after seeing me out the window.
This is why I won't wear lose fitting shorts on a bike. I'm afraid of having one fly up my shorts and start stinging...not a pleasent picture.

The worst bee sting that I experienced happened while I was driving my car. I don't have AC, so I drive cabbie-style (left arm out the window). A bee connected with my forearm, bounced off and landed between my legs on the seat.

It then proceeded to sting my, umm, package.

I'm driving along screaming trying to swat the thing away from the jewels. To other motorists, it must have looked like I was some nut punching my own nads.

Dont forget you'll need benadryll and another epi pen unless an emt is imedeatly on the scene. The epi pen only lasts 20 minutes. It takes about that long for the antihistamine from the benadryll to hit your bloodstream.

Long time ago I was cruising at 60 or 70 on my motorbike; I saw a black speck straight ahead that turned into a dot then got large very fast, all while remaining exactly in my straight ahead line of sight. Before I could react, the large bee struck exactly between my eyes on the bridge of my nose, and was jammed between my sunglasses and the brow of my helmet. The impact stung all by itself, at that speed, but the jackpot was when the bee stung me because of its entrapment. All this happened in less than a second; then I managed to brush it away with my gloved hand after a couple of attempts. I had a classic Roman style nose (i.e., in profile, a more or less straight line from my forehead to the tip of my nose) for a few days until the swelling went down.

I've used an epi-pen for bee stings a couple of times on rides. It hurt like hell but shut down the anaphylactic response pretty immediately. I rode home, took some benadryl, and monitored myself. Never needed a second epi-pen or a trip to the ER. Maybe I've been lucky.

Many years ago a buddy on a motorcycle had a yellow jacket hit right where his helmet and forehead met (no face shield). The rascal went barely under under the helmet and stung him several times before he could stop and get the helmet off. He was not allergic, but his face swelled up to the point he was unrecognizable.
