Well this is the third week now that i have been commuting to work on thursdays .And i love it. everybody at my job is like "you biked from where?!!" i tell them its really no big deal and that i pace my self and anyone can do it .As many of you know if you ride at sustainable paces over time you get better.and that what ive been doing .
I Live in bayridge brooklyn .Work in North bergen NJ>around ho ho kus.
I believe the distance is about 33miles .there are a about 7 uphills that last a few hundred feet with inclines of .5-15 % . today there was a little NE wind but i still managed to make it in 2:20:00 with an avg HR of 162 max HR 187. I wasnt rushing but i felt good (last night did recovery ride for 90 minutes avg hr 105)and drank 3 liters during the ride i put about a teaspoon and a half of seasalt ( family handpicked from greece )and i think thats one of the main reasons why im not tired or sore. We lose so mush salt when we sweat especially when its hot or when your riding at an intense pace and i think gatorade and a snack bar doesnt do it . I think these things are important and im putting them up for debate and questions. Do any of you commute to work for more than 10-20 miles via bicycle ?

34x25 FTW!
Is it really only 33 miles from Bay Ridge? I'd love to know the route you take.
There's a regular "very long commute" thread here. Check it out!

Calamari to go
Yes, please post the route.
My parents live one town over from Hohokus, and I've been thinking about doing a ride into NYC from there when I'm up visiting. Just need some route info to the GW.

Hatbike, check out the very long commute thread, since there are a few people with commutes over 20 miles. Most of us on the thread have roundtrips over 20 miles, but there are a few big mileage riders.

sure thing this is the route ; (keep in mind this route can be very dangerous becasue of traffic and )
I start off on 4th ave and 75th St. in bayridge so take 4th ave north all the way and make a left onto Atlantic ave and then continue until you make a right onto "brooklyn bridge boulevard "continue all the way until you see the major intersection and entrance for the bridge bike/walk path .go over the bridge and stay to your right continue moving north on park row centre srteet passing all the courts
and prk row center st will lead you to canal street where you will make a left onto canal street moving west stay on canal until you reach the west side highway bikepath where youll need to cross over the west side highway (from canal st wait for green light!!) to get on the bike path make a right onto the bike path and head north stay on the path all the way you will pass 42 st and then w72 st riverside park and then continue north along the water on the bike path until it appears to end at 125 st (you ll see people fishing and a big parking lot ) simply make a right turn onto 125 st and go a few blocks until you see broadway where you will turn adn make a left onto it going north there will be a sharp uphill for at least ten blocks + followed by flat plane for twenty blocks then a huge downhill for ten blocks followed by a huge uphill for 20 blocks+ as you continue north (i suggest you pedal up the big hills in your easier gears.lol. ) continue on broadway at 169 th street you will merge left and continue on B'way make a left onto 177th street and look for the signs to go on the bike path to go over the bridge (i dont know the names of the street but its a very small path just ask somenone around there if you cant find it .)

after you get over the bridge you will make a right turn on the first street you see youll be heading north on that street (505 north) after a few winding minor uphills and downhills this road will appear to end you will come to a stop sign wher eyou can only go right or left you want to go LEFT onto what will become W Palisade ave.
countinue several miles on this road (there are some major downhills be careful!)until you come to a circle go half way around the circle and make sure to continue on w palisade ave until you make a left onto E tyron ave . take that until you come to the first intersection at Teaneck road where you will make a right onto teaneck road heading north for several miles until you will see W Madison Ave make a left onto that youll pass over a rail crossing a few hundred feet later and then just continue straight fro a few miles the road will wind left and right until you come to a stop sign you will turn left onto new milford ave pass the rail crossing as you go up a .10% uphill for a few hundred feet then turn right onto the main road (503)going north for a half a mile and then make a left onto Oradell ave which is a small
uphill be prepared there are 4 consecutive uphills and downhills as you continue all the way straight on oradell ave and eventually turns into E Ridgewood ave from there you can get to different towns pretty easy .good luck.and let me know how you enjoyed the ride .

Yea that heat can raise yoru heartrate an extra 10 bpm for no reason and make things difficult .,Originally Posted by Revtor

So what is the interstate summer commute for you ? you go back and forth NY/NJ ?
34x25 FTW!
Now I understand your route. I know pretty much every road your talking about but I guess I never thought of that going that way (I have family near Ho-Ho-Kus). I think I'll try a modified version of your route (the NJ part) soon, thanks!
Calamari to go
Thanks.
I know most of the NJ roads very well but never biked them. While growing up, I usually went north and west, to Mahwah and Ringwood.
Out of curiosty, which town do you work in? Paramus or Ridgewood?

I commute from oakland - franklin lakes - ramsey - upper saddle river - new york (cant remember the town name, its right after USR) about ten miles each way. I work at a day camp so I can get as sweaty as I want and not worry about it. its a great summer commuter job!

I know this route too. I live further south around Nutley (formerly of Ocean Pkwy). My preference is, instead of riding W. Palisade all the way to Tyron/Teaneck Road, to make the first right after the circle onto Knickerbocker and take that north up to Madison. Knickerbocker is freshly paved, modest traffic, and nice and shady.Originally Posted by hatbike

If you don't mind riding a bit out of the way, you can take Knickerbocker to Durie Avenue, make a left and ride along the Oradel Resevoir, which dumps you out at Oradel Ave. Longer but gorgeous.
