Biking with a dog in a basket

Hi

Has anybody biked with a doggie in a basket? How do we do this? How do we stabilize the dog so it does not fall off? Any web sites for the basket and/or harnessess, leashes??

Thanks

Chanel

I had a bad close call. I put my dog in a basket secured with a leash which I thought was short enough to keep her from jumping out - WRONG! Instead of leaping forward like I thought she might, she flipped over backwards and managed to hang herself out the side of the basket. Her legs got scraped by the front spokes before I could stop. I was lucky. If I'd been going faster she could easily have broken her leg or worse. Needless to say, the rest of the ride was nearly as traumatic for the both of us. I did realize after this that you can tie off the BOTTOM of a dog's HARNESS - don't even try it with a collar - and indeed make it impossible for them to climb or jump out of the basket. Of course they won't be able to move around much. to You also have to ride within you and your dog's combined limits. I wouldn't do it in traffic of any kind. And besides, my dog hasn't been bugging me to go for a ride.

I too am curious as to why you will do this. What kind of dog is it? Is it well trained? I'd be more afraid of it jumping out than falling out.

Someone should ask Dorothy as soon as she wakes up.

I think it's a great idea. I have seen it done before, and I would assume it primarily depends on the
temperment of the dog. In my experience, there are two types of 'passenger' dogs: 1) a dog that is
restless, jumping around and always trying to chase things out of reach; 2) a dog that is content to
chill out and be content to be along for the ride.

There are harnesses available for dogs traveling in autos, but I'm sure they could be used for travel
on bicycles as well. I would advise experimenting in the driveway to ensure you have a 'type 2' dog.
I have two dogs, and I am positive that one of them would be a poor candidate for bike travel.

Here's a pet bicycle basket: http://www.petco.com/Shop/Product.as...=0&Ntt=bicycle

now if Giro made doggy helmets, then thats another story :)

Oh please, your dog could just as easily get hit by a car while you're walking him down the street or get his head chopped off while hanging it outside a car window. And what about the trailers that pull kids behind bikes? And a 5 lb dog is not going to make your bike off balance any more than a handlebar bag.

If he's docile enough to hang out in a moving basket and not want to jump out, go for it. He'll either be scared or love it.

Giro might not, but other companies do.

lol, that's awesome! :D

I've thought about getting a trailer for this very reason. Of course, he's a 75 pound labrador, so I couldn't use a basket anyway. He's very well trained and I take him out in the canoe often.

I could ride to our favorite hiking trails, unload the dog and off we go.

I think most people fall off their bikes more than they get hit by cars. Silly idea, IMHO. I think it's stupid that people let their dogs stick their heads out windows too. Just me, maybe.

I thought that's what tandems were for? :D Sorry, that was uncalled for.:o
I used to use a pull-behind bike carrier for stuff and I once pulled a friend's dog. It was a golden retriever and we just attached the leash to the harness. The dog was pretty happy after he got used to it.

I wouldn't want any size dog on the bike itself, you can run into stability issues.

Bicycles are statistically safer than cars. For crying out loud, there are seats for toddlers to ride on with a bike. These devices are thought to be safe and I have yet to see any horror stories about them. If your dog is calm enough to ride in a basket, by all means go for it. I bet he/she will have a blast once they figure out what is going on. Don't listen to the no-fun people.

If all else fails, try duct tape. It ain't just for ducks you know.

Hammye on here has a Boston Terrier that he's toting around in a front basket, I believe. I don't know how often he logs on these days. There used to be a guy around my neighborhood that would haul some little terrier-sized dog around in a milk crate on the back. When it was cold, the dog had a little space blanket. It seemed to enjoy the hell out of it.

And then there's my dog. We're just getting started. The first mile was scary for her, but now she really likes it. Yes, these are the same photos I gratuitously posted in the FG/SS forum the other night.

I rode by a guy the other day and on his back a jack russel terrier head was sticking out of a back-pack. He said the dog loves it.

My Boston Terrier could never be still that long. If I could teach him to ride however, Lance would be in trouble! He is the most powerful energy source in the universe! :D

Bungee cords. And they are reusable too.

When I was on vacation in Idaho, I saw a guy with a small trailer hauling his Bull Mastiff. The pup would get out and walk once in a while, then hop back in. That trailer was fully loaded.

When the guy got to a hill, I'll bet he was glad he had a triple. :D

Hi. That is exactly what I am looking for. My dopg is a puppy yet, but I am planning ahead. Where did you get the basket?

That's great. I had not thought of a helmet, but I think it's a good idea. I wonder if my dog would keep it on.

I have a beautiful puppy and I think it would and I would both enjoy biking together. However, after reading the responses and suggestions I will be very careful.
