Mayor Mamdani promoting bike commuting

In NYC we’ve had a couple of mayors, Deblasio and Adams, who paid lip service to cycling. Mamdani has shown greater commitment.

Not the best choice of video here. I’ll find another one soon.

He also rode the entire 40 mile Five Boro Bike Tour last weekend in a shirt and tie!

I did do a ride with the advocacy group Transportation Alternatives along the long bike lane along Queens Boulevard and somewhere along the way they talked about how important it was to have a mayor that listened to cyclists. They did give Deblasio his flowers though, as bike lane expansion was pretty large during his administration. Let's hope that Mamdani takes it even further.

Truly. And check out the new guy in the senate race in Maine. Similar stuff.

I hope this is all real because it would be a game changer if he actually gets a lot done. More bicycle infrastructure would be huge for NYC and if others cities see it, it could help us all. Everything I see and hear from him sounds good and it looks like he is actually trying to make a difference which is great. Leave the politics out of it, if he can make life better for cyclists and others in NYC, that is awesome and what we all need (not suggesting anyone is inserting politics here just FYI).

He's already done an astonishing amount in this short space of time. And people really like him.

What the current NYC mayor has accomplished in his short tenure has left me speechless.

A lot of his success is his communication. That makes his physical and fiscal successes more visible, but it's not just putting his thumb on the scale; it is a success of another form.

I went to college on Long Island and used to live in North Jersey and work in Manhattan, but I have since moved to the Midwest. It used to be a great city, but COVID disrupted everything and drove up the cost of living.

Mamdani seems to be the man to make the city 'affordable' again. He ran his campaign on it and won the election. If he can achieve it, I may move back. I have great memories there and, being self-employed, still maintain some business interests in the area.

Is Mamdani New York City's first real 'bike mayor?'

I hope he stocks the city-owned grocery stores with gels, energy bars, carb-replacement solutions, and organic StroopWaffles at discounted prices!

Not very likely to find many residents interested in such trendy enthusiast fare at any price among those who live anywhere near one of the proposed city owned grocery stores allegedly intended to bring reasonable food selections and prices to the underserved residents of current NYC food deserts.

Sorry mate, maybe this will make my meaning more obvious:

As a Brit and therefore someone that assumes sarcasm unless there’s strong evidence to the contrary, even I needed that clarification.

But then I haven’t really been observing Mamdani’s progress. I do suspect he’s slightly less of a crook than Guliani or Adams.

I hope you're right. It's too soon to say about Mamdani, and we know political forces can make an honest person into a crook. I don't remember corruption by Giuliani while he was mayor, but there was plenty when he was one of Trump's henchmen. He was a nasty person with bad policies, but that's not the same as corruption. He didn't understand that the government can't regulate the people's speech.

Adams was a huge disappointment. Right before he ran for mayor, I met him at a cyclist rally called a die-in where we all lay on the ground to simulate all the dying of cyclists by car drivers. He was a cyclist and sympathized with us. But then he became totally corrupt, and he canceled projects for making streets safer because his big donors didn't want them to go through.

Did he ever put his fork on frontwards? All his campaign photos had his fork on backwards.
