Bikes are cool. Cars are ugly and they smell funny. One is enough or too many. Some sweaters smell funny too but they keep you warm. I need a blue one and a red one. Wrenches come in different sizes but I only need one of each size. I don't have any DVDs but I might get some. Or not.

Bikes: Raleigh Grand Prix '05

No garage, but parked in my apartment parking lot is a Toyota Sienna '05. It is used to cart the family about (wife, two children w/ one on the way), plus large enough to be able to bring home large items (some furniture, etc.) Other than that, I bicycle or combine biking w/ mass transit for longer distances.

I used to drive only a old beat up Suburban that I used for a beach buggy. I fish a lot, and in Jersey we are allowed to drive on the beach from Sept-June. When my wife was getting a new VW Jetta, I figured out that I could get a new Golf TDI and the payments would be less than what I was paying monthly for gas for my Suburban.

I did make myself a promise that if I could commute almost every day this school year I would sell the Golf.

Yecch. The last thing I want to see (or smell) on the beach is somebody's beat up old truck. That's almost as bad as SUVs in the woods. Get a mountain bike! Maybe they make a dune bike you could ride on the beach? Or have you ever tried walking?

Well, I don't have a garage. I do have a big enclosed porch (8X13), which is where i keep the bikes... along with the stuff I just can't seem to get rid of...

Parked out front is a red '94 Grand Am GT. Bought in January of 2000, and finally paid off sometime in 2003, I think it was. Anyway, I'm trying to drive it less and less, as little as possible.

I'm going to try biking to the office in the early A.M. (where I pick up my 140 or so newspapers) instead of driving to it, and bike the whole way, which would be a total of 15 miles. I've been biking 13-14 some days anyway, a minimum of 10 other than Sunday mornings for the last few weeks, so it shouldn't be a problem - chain, etc. is oiled, tires are filled, tool kit is stocked, so I think I'm ready. I don't know if my husband is, though ... he appreciates my efforts, but still thinks I'm a bit nutty... like that's anything new!

My Harley usually just sits while the cycles get ridden.

To add insult to injury,it served as a bike rack for my Trek until I got a double bike stand put up.

In the garage? The oldest car is kept in the garage! But that's because it's a 67 Ford Galaxy 500 convertible. That leaves room for the smallest car because the other larger ones won't fit with the Galaxy in it, which is a 2004 Toyota Corolla my daughter drives. The others sit outside basking in all sorts of weather.

The Chevy Malibu stays in the garage, the Chevy Cavalier stays outside on the parking pad, and the bike stays in the shed out back. I'd prefer that it were different, but the Malibu won't fit in the shed...

The 01 Pathfinder gets half of the garage pretty much all of the time...I never drive it and my wife doesn't drive. We really only use it for the occasional errand or camping trips.

The rest of the garage is filled with bikes...04 Rockhopper Comp, 05 Allez Elite, 04 Lan'ai, 01 Major Jake, and 88 Peugeot. They actually get more of the garage than the Pathfinder does.

Good one. I use my car's bike rack as a repair stand. Perfect height. Costs nothing!

Garage? I wish, then kids would stop sitting on my hood. 1996 Jeep Cherokee Classic, a replacement for the 1993 Jeep Cherokee Country that got smashed by an inattentive driver.

Gas mileage 21hwy/9city, but I bicycle commute every day and use the Jeep for TV/roommate/fencer hauling and moving.

I've been sadly without a bike for the past couple of weeks. It takes a loooong time to UPS coast to coast

The choice to start commuting on bicycle and saving money was not a difficult one with these gas swilling rigs. I still use the Tahoe several times weekly and it has a Yakima setup to carry up to 8 bikes so its nice for hauling people and bikes. The Caddy is being sold in favor of a more fuel efficient classic like a Ford Falcon or BMW 2002.

If you like the Caddy keep it! Your not driving it everyday anyway so the amount of money you spend for fueling it is not as big of a deal as the Tahoe. Not familar with the engine in the Caddy, but there are steps you can take (that "might" be available) to get better fuel economy.

A cheap start is to replace the air cleaner and filter with a freeflowing open air cleaner from K&N; this will surprise you as to how much fuel economy you'll gain just from doing this one thing.

The second step you can do is go with a larger diameter exhaust pipe(s) and freeflowing mufflers; mufflers from Walker are very freeflowing without the (bark) noise the performance ones you have heard; again a good increase in fuel economy.

The third step is to improve the ignition system with a electronic one.

The fourth step is a step that I'm not sure what is available for your engine, is to get a new intake manifold that will accept a new spread bore carburetor. A spread bore carb has much smaller primaries but large secondaries so that when your just cruising down the road its just sipping gas as compared to your current carburetor that has the same size openings for both; but when you step on the gas the larger secondaries open giving you the same performance (maybe better) as you have now...but of course when you step on it your gas mileage will decline. Once you have that installed you find someone who can dyno tune your car for max gas mileage; a good dyno mechanic will keep replacing the jets and adjusting them to find the optimum response. In fact if you find a good dyno mechanic first he can advise which manifold and carburetor will work on that engine.

If you can't find a spreadbore setup for your engine then still find the Dyno tuner mechanic and have them adjust your current carb for max fuel economy.

I did these things to my Galaxy with a 390 and went from 12mpg to 21!

If you do these things keep the original parts (except for the exhaust because you can buy original exhaust from anywhere), so if you sell the car you still have the "original" parts that a new owner may want to convert back with. Some people want a factory stock car.

A salvaged (from the garbage) 1969 Raleigh Sport -- right now it has 26" wheels and is set up single-speed w/ nashbar slicks to be my daughters next ride.
At least ten bike seats that don't work for anyone in this family hanging on the walls and a few extra wheels (steel rims mainly).
