For comparison I usually average 17.x wherer x <5 on my commutes. That is 4 miles through city streets and and 3 miles of trail each way, however I picked a 1.5 lane road that has only 1 stop light or sign the whole 2 miles I am on it!!!

zebano, that doesn't help without knowing elevation climbs, or lack of it in CR or the number of years you've been cycling. I'm slowly coming up on my first year anniversary, so I'm pleased with my progress.
I do remember rolling hills in IA, but not any good climbs, but I was more between IC and DesM, and didn't get up in your neck of the woods often.
