look at the droopy-chain bike(s)! Looks like if you start pedaling the top part of the chain will go taut and the bottom part of the chain will start dragging on the ground with all the leftover chain.

the one with bricks on it is RIDICULOUS.

I'm not sure my parents' truck could handle that

The round black things? They aren't bricks. I think it's charcoal for heating or cooking. I was in China about ten years ago and saw lots of those "pick up bikes". Actually I like them. They are all well used, no hairs on those tires that's for sure. It would be interesting to see one in a detailed show room condition.

I was jogging in Xian one night and every time a car passes a bicycle it has to beep it's horn. It was the first time I had a hang over before I started drinking. Sure it's insane, but it's not boring.

Yah, those are not bricks but cyclinder shaped coal blocks for water heaters and stoves at home. They have a number of tiny holes in the middle for thorough combustion. You have to replace them every 5-6 hours to keep the fire going... They're really good alternative to sand in the winter as you can spread out the ash on the road!

I once saw one of these loaded up with pieces of polystyrene, which does not weigh much, so the rider had absolutely loaded it up to the maximum possible. The load literally dwarfed the rider, a huge towering load, wide as a truck. Caused havoc on the road. There was no wind to speak of. Not that that would have deterred the hardy pedaller.

Well this pretty much answers the question "How do you tell a serious cyclist?"

What I particularly liked was the springs on the bike with the brick-like things. I wonder if he gets into arguments with other cyclists about the benefits of full suspension vs. hardtail.

Does anyone else think the brakes look a little skimpy on some of those bikes?

Brakes... what brakes? I'm thinking the Presta valves are a little pretencious though.

Gotta love that Beijing is almost perfectly flat! We tried to find a bike rental place when we visited 2 years ago, it was such a bike friendly city!

Maybe if we all carried a half-ton of things that look artillery shells with us, motorists wouldn't pass so close.

I thought they were natural gas tanks that hook up to gas stoves for cooking etc...
