Broken windshield 1/Armadillos 0

West Palm Beach has been a tad hectic this past week with all the lights out. I didn't want to wait in line to get gas so I spent the past week living carless. Props to you guys that do that all the time.

Most of the traffic lights were out so it was a little hairy trying to get right of way with a four way stop with four lanes in each direction. Left handers were real fun.

I came across the remnants off what appeared to have been an absolutely spectacular wreck. I had no option but to roll right over a huge area of glass. I had complete confidence until I heard Sssssssssssssss.

So I guess even armadillos aren't invincible.

Unlucky.

Had you pumped them up recently. I had a similar situation but with freshly 120 psi-ed slicks and escaped unscathed.

Auto glass is not usually sharp enough to cut a decent tire although a sharp piece of bottle glass or similar will penetrate just about anything.

Might've been the beer bottles in the car. Automobile glass is designed to fragment into tough pebbles rather than sharp shards.

if it's an automoblie accident - all sorts of pieces of metal and hard plastic are broken as well. those can be sharp enough to puncture a tire.

Bikes: a mountain bike with a cargo box on the back and aero bars on the front. an old well-worn dahon folding bike

So I guess even armadillos aren't invincible.
To some extent I think it's dumb luck. I run a kevlar-belted bontrager tire on my rear wheel, which i think is no better and no worse than an armadillo. I've ridden over auto glass, beer bottles, nails, screws, etc, numerous times without getting flats. But I did have a 1-inch nail go through the tire about 14 months ago-- the only time that tire ever had a puncture.

My kevlar-free front tire has just a Tuffy liner and hasn't flatted since I got the liner, (about 14 months ago) so I'm leaving it as-is for now.

That is a bit strange. I once rode over about 2/10th of a mile of shattered and crunched plate glass with Armadillos and they were not the least bit affected. I have also rode over auto glass after an accident plenty of times and never had issues then either. I think you had dumb luck. How worn were your tires?

I ride through patches of glass often and I only have an armadilo on the rear and I have never had a flat.
