Bike fuel

Personally, I love tasty food, but if I don't have what I want, I'll eat whatever I can get my mits on.

This morning, I ate 5 plain hard-boiled egg whites and a package of Ramen noodles with a cup of sweet tea. Kind of blah, but my muscles will thank me.

When you don't have a nicely planned meal, what do you grab to feed your muscles after a ride?

Unfortunately, my office has all kinds of junk food in the kitchen for our clients to munch on during the day. I have no willpower or self-control, so if I haven't brought enough food with me, I'll eat about 100 "snack-sized" Reese's Peanut butter cups. Mmmm... I might just wander down there right now.

That's the Coold Hand Luke diet?

I tend to do a chicken breast for protein, I usually have them in the fridge or freezer.

Bikes: 1988 Specialized Rockhopper Comp, converted for touring/commuting. 1984 Raleigh Team USA road bike.

I recently did a Google on recovery foods for athletes. The list was kind of strange. However, among the list (lucky for me) was peanut butter and honey. This is what I hit fist many times. After that, it's fruit. I'm a fruit junky.

Hmm,

My standard morning feed at the office is a very High fiber wafer (fiber Rye) with lots of organic peanut butter on it.

I was a pop tart junkie for years but I had gained 80 lb in the 6 years I worked here .

I got serious 2 years ago and took it all off! Im now pretty strict on what I eat .

I dont worry about the amount so much as what it is.

Coffee and a banana from the newsstand in the building lobby and I keep a box of oatmeal variety packs in my desk. That's breakfast. Lunch is whatever I'm feeling like and dinner's pasta or fish, chicken, pork, or beef w/ veggies. Water throughout the day along w/ several trips to the bathroom. Like now.

When I get the munchies at work the only choice I usually have is a vending machine which is loaded with junk. And since I also have no will power thats what often goes to fuel my ride home. And then I wonder why a guy who bikes 85+ miles a week can gain 15 lbs this year.

I second the PB&H. My favorite lunch is a peanut butter, honey, bannana, yogurt, and granola burrito. There's a kosher/vegatarian resturant in Nashville that sells them, but down here in The ATL I have to make them myself. Even my smallish size one is more filling and long lasting than anything else.

Lately, I've been making this strange shake before my morning commute. Gives me plenty of energy for my big six mile ride in to work although I do snack on a NutraGrain bar or something similar once I arrive.

1.5 cups of skim milk
1 cup uncooked oatmeal
1 banana
1 tbsp natural peanut butter
1 scoop of chocolate protein powder
1 squirt of honey

Blend well for 1+ minutes and drink cold. It's not the tastiest thing I've ever eaten, but it seems to do the trick. Note: don't even try drinking through a straw.
