SUV! EVIL!

I could use our family car (03 camry) if I had the desire. Driving is such a wonderful way to ruin my commute.

That's the truth! I get grumpy and irritable when I can't commute by bike.

That is the point.
If road not dry = drive
Dying on the side of the road, ignored by passing motorists, is not in my plans for this winter.
I take enough chances with traffic on suburbian/rural roads as it is to add rain, snow, etc. I rather commute 1/2 of the days in the year without any aggravating risks that the ones that I already chose. Same with commuting in the dark for me, too many teenagers cruising around completely oblivious of what is ahead on narrow, shoulderless roads.

But I couldn't afford to drive half the time. Not maintaining my old car frees up the money to buy the gear needed to drive safely in snow/ice/rain/dark. Riding in those conditions can be as safe as driving in those conditions, as long as you are careful, have the right equipment, and the right experience.
As for me, dying on the side of the road, hunched over the steering wheel after suffering a heart attack, ignored by passing motorists, is not in my plans for this winter.

I mostly agree with the "safety > guts" idea. I double and triple-check intersections on and just after the first snowfall of the year, and especially the first time it gets icy. After that, most drivers seem to know what they're doing, and my snow skillz will have reappeared from dormancy. Still, I can fall at any time on the slush and snow that never gets cleared on my route. I go out anyway. That's guts or stupidity - I can't tell the difference anymore.

I have a very safe commute compared to a lot of you. Mostly ped-free MUP most of the way and designated bike route streets the rest of the way, so have ridden all days except one sick day and the day I had to deliver my espresso machine to the shop. Part of this winter's test is to see what the day will be like where I get half-way there and think it would have been a better idea to have driven. Haven't encountered it yet, maybe in January.
