Shoes, NON-SPD

Any recommendations on a shoe that is comf-y for standing and riding with toe-clipps?

When using toe clips and straps I just wear sneakers, but I once saw a guy in cycling shorts and wingtips.

Wouldn't any shoes work with toe clips?

Bikes: a bunch.

^hiking/cross shoes don't work so well. They always have big lugs that hook on the strap.

A narrow shoe with not too much tread should work great. When I still rode with clip/strap, any regular athletic shoe would work, or a light hiker. The hip kids are rocking olde skool Adidas, Puma and pre-Nike Converse. Check Vans are teh hawtnezz.

REI.com has some shoes by Shimano that can take cleats for clipless, but I use the for commuting usings cages. They have a stiff enough sole so no to fatigue your foot but comfortable enough to walk around in without looking dorky.

Running shoes or cross trainers (court shoes) should work just fine.

I have some Shimano MO38 shoes which is not what you wanted, but they work great for cycling with clips. They have a cut & peel away part of the tread that is removed if you want to put a cleat in, but you don't need to. I've walked in them more than cycled (only have 30mi cycling, about 50mi walking in them) I don't know if they are good for standing, but for cycling without cleats they are great as they have a stiff sole. They look quite plain.

Adidas makes a retro '70s tennis shoe called 'Stan Smith' that has a narrow sole, smooth solid leather uppers (no lavish stripes, or stitching to catch on the clips) with no nylon mesh to leak water, and the sole has virtually no tread, so they slise in/out easily. They are perfect for using clips.
