I was thinking that narrower would be better for commuting with my son in a trailer. So far I have only seen Burley and Chariot offering single child trailers. Are there any other choices out there, maybe in the lower price categories?

Man, just go with Chariot. They're made in my city, Calgary, and our shop goes through them like crazy. They might be expensive, but they have good warranties, and you'll get good product too.

I have to agree with jayroc. Chariot is by far the industry leader with child carriers. They may cost more then some trailers but they are made in Canada, have a amazing warranty, as well as customer service that is friendly and quick.

Chariots are high quality. You won't be disappointed. We sell them at REI.

Go with the Burley - when I compared the Chariot and Burley side by side, that's the choice that I made and I love it (even more important, my son loves it). It's lighter than the Chariot, has more cargo capacity and has a proven track record. Just my two cents.

If you buy a trailer get one with roll bars. I have had cargo trailers go over on me.

I've been using a Burley Solo trailer on a daily basis for about a year and a half now. Half of my commute involves pulling my kid to day care....I leave the trailer there and continue on to work. The trailer is now going through its second winter...and no problems. Its still as solid as the day I got it. Its been in all sorts of weather...and it stays dry inside and even on the coldest of days my kid stays sufficiently warm inside it. We use it on the weekends too during the warmer months. The longest ride I've ever pulled it, I think, was around 50-55 miles. Basically, he's learned to love it, and as long as you throw plenty of toys and books in there he'll ride in it all day. There is also plenty of cargo space for bringing along lunch, tools, water, etc. for a daily outing. I don have experience with other trailers, but I can say from experience that any trailer is better than any seat mounted onto the bike itself. I crashed once..slid out on a wet road...but the trailer stayed upright. Anther time, the back wheel of the trailer hit the side of a curb and the trailer itself flipped over, which scared the hell out of me. But when I stopped to flip it back upright he was just hanging there, unharmed, in the 5-point harness. Just to satsify my curiosity, I've also had the trailer up to speeds of 35-40 mph (don't try this unless you know the road really well, and by all means don't put your kid in it at that speed! Use a dummy, like a big bag of flour to give it some weight) and the thing remains stable, even at that speed. Overall, I'm very impressed with the Burley Solo...lighweight, proven to be durable, fun, and safe.

Thanks for the advise, sounds like chariot and burley both make good trailers. There is a bike shop one block from my house that sells burleys so I am probably going to go with it.

Check out this link. It is from another post, and the first post is of my Chariot Caddie. I LOVE this trailer, as do my children. Granted, this one is a double trailer, and you are asking about a single, but I feel you can't go wrong with a Chariot. We bought a chariot because it is a jogger, stroller and a trailer all rolled into one. We bought the Cheetah. The shops in our area didn't carry Burley so I can't speak to them. There is a lot of junk out there so please be picky.
