How long have you commuted to work by bike?

was biking everywhere at age 15 but started my first job, at the A&P, when I was 16 in 1970 and have commuted to every job I've had since- so 36 years this year.

Since 1998, my third year in law school, when I got sick of what a pain in the neck driving was. Have commuted to every job I've had since then (two clerkships and two law firms).

I started commuting in high school 20 miles, 7 years as a messenger, and riding to every other job I've ever had. Now that I'm in Los Angeles I don't see how people can drive in this traffic every day.

Just started in September, but I didn't get serious about it until January 1st of this year. I've only missed three days so far this year, and my goal is to miss less than 10 for all of 2006. I love it, although I can't explain why.

Bikes: Three road bikes. Two track bikes.

About 8 or 9 years (though off and on with the intensity and dedication).

Still in the process to be a fulltime commuter, the first time ever was in May 2004.

Looking at the results of this poll, I see a large majority of people have recently started commuting. Why do you think that is?

Is it because as people commute for more years, they stop reading the forums (the forums usefulness is mainly for beginners)?
Is it because people stop commuting after five or six years (the novelty has worn off)?
Or, is it because long time commuters don't use the internet or haven't found this forum yet?

or is it because commuters don't often commute by bike for much longer than 10 years?

I quit commuting when got pregnant with our first kid and the wife was sentenced to bed rest in 04.. was only at it for 3 years up to that point.. now I haul a laptop back and forth, that allows me to work part of my day from home rather than all of it there.. was a 17mile ride the short way each way.. i loved it.. it's a different world now tho... cars are bigger.. more SUVs now.. and more mindless twits are on the phone while driving... I need to be around for my kids.. they are still only 10 and 11.. so I get the time in while they do homework instead..
