I am fortunate that I can bring my bikes inside but I recently had to run some errands, so I pulled out this old Trek by Kryptonite Ulock I've had forever. As soon as I looked at it I remembered the whole bic pen thing (I also quickly pulled out a moto Kryptonite disc lock I bought a while ago). Of course I have missed the voluntary replacement and they are not on the settlement page and I can not unlock with a BIC, but I do not want to chance it, plus I already picked up a OnGuard Pitbull at a great price, which is adequate for the moto and cycles.

I guess i have two questions:
Anybody know of a way to verify which ones? I called and they said any tubular lock from them is possible.
Assuming they are bad should I just chuck them in the garbage? Seems like a waste there has to be some good use for them?

I use an old tubular lock to lock up my grill outside in the summertime. The type of theif who will steal a grill is lazy and won't want to fiddle with a lock when he can steal my neighbors unlocked grilll.

If the keyway looks like a donut, it's vulnerable. How much is, of course, the subject of much debate.

As to what to do: Either re-cycle them or have fun breaking 'em. You can try all the silly tricks to see if any work. Have a few of the fellas over in your garage with some beer and you have boys night in with power tools. Make certain to have an E.R. pool when the power tools come out!

I have heard it suggested that it be used as a secondary lock, to secure front wheels and such. Sure, the vulnerability exists, but the risk is not that great if the item being secured is a front wheel only. As we noted b/f, thieves are lazy.

you can still claim it. call the number on the kryptonite site, they will direct you to a registry on a website executing a class action settlement on kryptonite that will either replace your old lock or give you a 40 buck voucher. I exchanged my lock in nov/dec. it should take around 3 weeks.

Will Kryptonite replace the Trek locks? A fair-weather cycling friend of mine has one, and winter would be a good time to suggest sending it back if it will be replaced.

What I do is....

I sometimes have to run a errand from work to another office in town, SOOOO I leave my OLD U-Lock on the bike rack downtown.

Never have to worry about carrying that extra lock, I always have a Kryto Cable (combo) lock, but I always use 2 locks in town.

I replaced an old Krytonite lock this fall and remember that their website included replacement for "co-branded" locks. Your Trek lock is probably included--i seem to remember seeing Giant branded locks, at least.

Nevermind, I just checked their website and it says they're no longer taking voluntary exchanges, but list an e-mail address. I'd try contacting them and seeing what they'll do for you.
