Bikes: Surly Long Haul Trucker set up for commuting and loaded touring, old Sekine road frame converted to fixed-gear, various beaters and weird bikes, waiting on the frame for my Surly Big Dummy build

I try to to always lock my bike. The exceptions are when it's at home (either in the house or in the garage), when it's propped against my cube at work, and when it's leaning on the window at my favorite lunch stop, because there is literally nothing to lock it to there.
I use a Kryptonite evolution mini U lock and am very happy with it. There are more secure locks out there, but Kryptonite's disc cylinders are pretty secure against casual picking (unlike the bic pen cylinders) and the small size of the lock means it would be very difficult to jack the lock open. A lot of really bog U locks are actually big enough to fit a hydraulic bottle jack inside of. Two tons of force is more than enough to compromise most U locks. If you're shopping for a new U lock, keep this in mind and buy the smallest size that works well for you.
