Very first commute
Did my first NYC commute today...worked from home in the morning 'cause I needed to stop at LBS to check something funny with the chain on my fixed gear; got back home and figured it was too nice to ride the subway into work.
Any fellow Manhattan dwellers - need some advice; what would be the best (safest) route from the Upper West Side (Riverside Dr) into Midtown (Bryant Park area)? Went thru Central Park - which was fine until getting dumped out in the madness around 5th Ave and Central Park South.

Don't have any advice about Manhattan for you, but I always like to salute the first-timers:

I'll drink to that...
Did my first commute today as well. It was more a psycological thing than a physical challenge. My workout rides are 20+ miles, the plant is only 5 miles from the house.
Lunch may be a hassle, but it'll be good practice for that $5.00/gallon gas.
And my dainty 210lb butt can use the xtra miles.

Fixd & Mitty, welcome to the Happy Healthy Commuting MuthaF*ckers Club. You are now at least 2 magnitudes more awesome than the average commuter.
As for getting from Riverside to Bryant Park, just take the Hudson Greenway, then jump off into the midtown madness wherever you need to go. Oboeguy used to have a similar commute so he might be able to recommend a better route.

I have no idea of NYC routes, but I welcome both of you to the addiction. Enjoy!

Thanks J! Was thinking the same thing...going to try that on Monday.
Trip back after work wasn't as bad - took Madison Ave north and then cut over into the Park.

Riverside is pretty safe, the bike path is great, and the cross streets are a bit less crazy than the avenues.

There are 2 ways. Go down the bike path but then you have to cross town. Otherwise, just take broadway it's the funnest fastest way down.
