A dog...being walked by our state's governor.
|
Which was the animal?
|
Flicker(s), a large woodpecker like bird, usually pounding holes in the side of my house. Followed by chickadees which try to nest in those holes, and bees, which have nested in those holes. And then I start my commute.
The usual robins, swallows, the plague-like starlings, and frogs from the neighbors' ponds. Along the river trail I have seen deer, rabbits and squirrels. This morning there was a bald eagle, but it just had the white head plumage. Snapped a couple pics. |
A dead snake. And some flies :p
|
Had my first commute home from work yesterday. I saw dogs, cats, moose, magpie, canada goose, ducks, and some skeeters. :)
|
Goddam squirrels.
|
I saw a coyote.
|
Over the last few days:
Fox, lots of Canadian geese, squirrels, chipmunks, a pair of sandhill cranes in someone's front lawn, and a 3-pack of roadies in full team kit, who weren't going that much faster than me considering I was riding a hybrid with 32s and panniers. |
Recently I saw a new one for me: a pronghorn antelope.
|
I see tons of squirrels. One actually almost ran into my wheel. It was a close call.
I also see assorted birds and I've seen a snake in a creek by my work. I also saw a possum in the middle of the road. He was pretty well smooshed so I'm guessing he wasn't playing dead. An ugly bugger, too. Good god. I just said "bugger". |
Saw a fox on the path here in Denver the other day.
The best though, was riding in the mountains in Arizona, and had to stop for a whole herd of elk. I never realized quite how BIG they are!!!! |

On Friday's commute I lost a blinkie (how very "me" :)) and went back to find it, and I found a mama duck with her batch of ducklings! My camera's batteries were nearly dead but I managed to score one photo before it shut itself down again.
Oh, and I did find the blinkie too :) The ducklings are all huddled right behind Mama Duck there. |
Whenever I ride near water, I seem to see foxes. I've ridden right into the middle of herds of deer. Seen raccoons scampering across the road. A friend of mine screamed and pulled his legs up over his handlebars as he rode over a bull snake. That was funny to watch/awful to see.
This morning, for the first time, I actually SAW one of the skunks I've been smelling most summer nights for the past few years. Oddly, I didn't smell it until I was about 3 blocks past it. |
I saw a cockatiel… actually I heard it first, and recognized it as “non-native”
an apparent fugitive :) |
Every day I have to pass this dead racoon. The thing is the size of a skate board and reeeeeekkkkks. Serious road kill!
|
This morning on Mt. Diablo (SF Bay Area) I passed within about 5 feet of a pair of coyotes. They just stared at me as I went by and then went about their business. Then, about 200 yards up the road, I came within about 20 feet of a deer. Another 1/4 mile up the road I came across a couple of banana slugs on the road. It's nice to be able to take a ride up the mountain on the way in to the office.
|
Saw a small brown snake on the road which I practically ran over on my way home last night.
|
A stallion, mare and very young filly crossed my path this morning.
|
typical: cats, squirrels, lots o mean dogs (always call Animal Control)
not so typical: rabbit, cyote, occasional snake, confused cow outside the fence, possum, raccoon, armadillo! bike v. animal: small bird tried to fly thru spokes while i was railing around corner. Bird lost many feathers but flew on, seemed uninjured. Scared me! |
last week I saw a frozen horny toad and a roadrunner. The roadrunner was really cool, it was hanging out by the bike rack and I got a real good look at him. I didn't think they lived up here at 7,000ft.
|
I see wild turkeys every so often
Makes me a bit hungry... |
Since I moved, I mainly see flattened, rotting carcasses of squirrels, rabbits, and cats. I saw a bobcat once. I pass a house that has horses, but I don't count those.
|
theres some rabbits that are always in my yard. i see them sometimes on my ride. squirels, songbirds, vultures, hawks, armadillos, blue herons, and my favorite loose dogs which i get to chase me so that their owners get to run.
(offtopic) ride past a house, see owner, tell owner to grab dog cause dog likes to run, owner doesn't, i call dog who runs after me, i slow down so it catches up, i then speed up, i finally stop and dog catches me, proceeds to lick my fist, owner gets close and i ride away some more, about 1/4 mile from house. HAHAHAH |
Here in London there arn't too many creatures appart from the omnipresent rancid pigeons. I do however see at least two Zebra nearly every day (as I pass the Zoo!). Slightly off topic but I think I have identified a new 'urban sport'. It is basically fox hunting carried out on BMX bikes by little hoodrats in the London uniform of cheap sportswear shouting "'ere mate where'd e'go? 'E went dat way bruv" as the fox calmly trots out of the way.The fox having not been rasied from the cradle exclusively on KFC cigs and playstation easily outruns his hunters! The day I see the tables turn and the hunters become the prey will be a truly great one (and not entirely unlikely given how brazen the London foxes are these days)
|
I saw a Coral Snake - kinda rare. I stopped to look and sure enough he had red touching yellow. Pretty cute for a snake that could kill you in a few minutes.
Oh, and also I ride by a place where there is a flock of feral parrots - plain little green guys, probably of the brotogeris family. (this is in Florida) |
