Rabbits, squirrels and chipmunks make up the bulk of my animal sightings... And by sightings I mean they appear suddenly beside the MUP and start running beside me darting left to right all the while. I've had a few close calls with squirrels and chipmunks darting suddenly between my wheels but no actual incidents. A rabbit was threatening to do so this morning which worried me more - they're bigger and don't run as low to the ground. (less BB/crank clearance, I figure)
Gulls. Everywhere. A few weeks ago I had a few take off, fly in the same direction as I was riding, dropping little white splatter bombs as they went - I had to decelerate fairly quickly to avoid rolling right into their insidious little projectiles! If I take the off-road path, I sometimes see some deer, skunks and raccoons as well. There's so many birds about and most of my route is tree-lined, so they're more often heard in the trees but not seen. edit: Also seen - snakes, fuzzy caterpillars (might have squished one or two by accident, since you can't really see them until your front wheel is about to pass...), horses, ducks, dogs, cats, geese, groundhogs, and bipedal primates engaged in various activities such as jogging, running, walking, cycling and sitting in large rolling metal cages that spew noxious gasses. |
Squirrels, Rabbits, dogs, cats, horses, snakes, a red fox sometimes, red tailed hawk that i think was checking me out.
Oh yeah, can't forget the Fords, chevy's, BMWs, mercedes, hummers, infiniti's, lexus (lexi?), and other loud obnoxious road hogs. Bunches of rednecks too. |
I've had some cool meetings with whitetail deer in some wooded areas of my ride. Yesterday, two were playing chase around a hedgerow in my neighborhood, and ran out in front and along side me for about 20 yards last night. Pretty magnificent to be "running with the deer".

Other than the above mentioned 'normal' stuff, I have seen a groundhog once - this wasn't on the streets I usually take, but on the main Don valley path (a longer but more green and pleasant alternative) - I stopped out of sheer shock, just hammered on the brakes and stopped right there - I had to double-triple check my eyes - this thing was just happy as a lamb sitting at the path side eating on some grass or something.

In Miami I see a a very disagreeable animal species which I don't think has been identified but I'll describe it.
Both the male and the female of the species are similar to a sloth. They are fat, slow moving creatures. They seem to like to occupy SUVs. The most disagreeable tend to occupy the Hummer. They have a distinctive, shrill cry, or bleat. Its usually something like "Get the f@ck off the road!" And the stink of burned hydrocarbons. |
Just this summer I saw pelicans fishing on the weir on the Bow just downstream of the downtown. It was quite the scene, a bunch of tourists watching, and the pelicans just going about their business. Check it out some time if you are in Cowtown, it's cool.

This morning I saw a HUGE gopher... I mean this guy must have been on steroids...

Last nights commute home... two deer, a squirrel, a bird and someones sweatshirt laying in the road.
This mornings commute...two dead deer, a dead squirrel, a dead bird, and a dead opossum (it might have been a sweatshirt): Makes me a little nervous for the ride home tonight. |
the usual: dogs, cats, squirrels, hawks, rabbits, deer
the rare: bobcat, coyote, porcupine, bats, owls, raccoon and what I'm pretty sure was a cougar (shiver) |
It seems does like to run in pairs. On Friday I decided to take a 20 mile detour on the local crushed gravel MUP through the Cuyohaga Valley National Park. This was of course at dusk. I say three different pair of does near the trail before it got dark and I turned around to head home.
You would think that after I left the Park and starting traveling on city streets the wildlife would thin out but there on the side of the road in a industrial area was another pair. Craig |
I ride a lot on Maryland's eastern shore. I see deer, domestic llamas and goats, fox, raccoons, possum, land turtles, snapping turtles, frogs, snakes, hawks ( red shouldered, kestrels, osprey) , eagles, turkeys, and all sorts of assorted songbirds. I've seen sting rays in the shallows of some rivers. I never get tired of the animals and on almost every ride will see some sort of behavior or incident that just blows me away.

Lots of deer and squirrels lately. Possums lurking in our back yard too.

I rode by a skunk last weekend. Lucky for me I got by him before he could get his tail up.
